Stu/Sue Moment 7: Badder than everyone
"Oh I'm the worst ever, I've done the worst things and you can't compare even slightly."
Okay, first things first, why? Why are you so salty dammit. Many characters I've seen with this edgy annoying trait also comes with a side of having no personality as this trait takes up their entire being. Their entire story resolves around them being super edgy and doing terrible things, which are often not mentioned, are 'unfathomable', or cliché like 'oh I killed a bunch of people,' to which I say In what universe do you not have police or goodie two shoes that aren't tailing the edge lord every six seconds trying to stop or arrest them for their wrong doings? I don't think people are gonna wake up and say: 'oh a whole bunch of people just died let's keep living normally and not beg my authorities to stop it.' Next comes the common trait of their body count being well in the billions, entire families and people, to again I say 'pray tell how do you kill that many people in such a short time,' and again, how has nobody stopped you? If you state you killed them all or avoided them with leaving absolutely no trace each and every genocide or murder, you've officially strayed into stu/sue territory.
What I'm getting at is that having an oc like this is a one dimensional character. Again, as they are only salty and can kill seemingly everyone super easily, they had no other traits. No other personality traits, no other true motives. Kill everyone is not a motive on it's own, one cannot be evil for the sake of being evil. A story can only be so interesting with a 'so I killed this guy, and than that guy, and another guy' until it becomes predictable and loses the spark that should come when your character is murderous. These edgy characters I see often have no background whatsoever, and no reason to be evil.
To explain what a good edgy oc is, we'll use my villain Nacl, who was deemed by his coworkers as the most malevolent and dangerous person they knew. His name legit means salt, and indeed between his fits of anger and violent nature he is salty. Nacl's biggest personality trait, however is not being salty or edgy, but rather his unquenchable desire to know the outcome of everything. Born with psychosis, Nacl failed to understand his actions against others would have negative effects and consequences, leading to him accidentally poisoning his family to death. However he was not born evil, rather unstable. This ended him up in a foster home, where the next family he had, suffered a similar fate. After then he was sent to an asylum, where he was wrongly diagnosed with mania and treated with shock therapy. Between that and several moments of abuse, Nacl was driven more insane than he already was, and his first moment of activity seeking out someone to kill was limited to his doctors who had abused him, when he learned that killing people was a way to keep people from further hurting him, he continued using that as a method to keep himself safe. It was not exactly easy at first, but as he sought to kill he taught himself to do it better and faster. He was nearly found out multiple times, only when he faked his sanity to avoid being suspicious, only when he got away and joined Nightmare Enterprises was he free from being caught for his crimes. While being a salty person and indeed preforming actions that were unfathomable at times like using his fellow employees as test subjects when he didn't have enough test candidates, or made horrific monsters out of once normal creatures, he had other traits, such as having a giggly, childish personality to go beside his salty one, or again his curiosity and dark humour. Nacl's motives to kill where at first accidental as he wanted to know what poison would really do, the second time he was killing to protect himself and vent his built insanity. Finally he started killing again out of the curiosity of the results, wanting to know what would happen. While one can argue that Nacl has killed practically billions as it was his monsters that destroyed most of the universe in NME's take over, he himself wasn't the direct cause of all the murder. The billions his monsters killed were over the years, and most of Nacl's monsters were stopped by the GSA, and he got away with the murders of his coworkers out of having no law force within them. Being NME's favourite, between his eagerness towards NME's cause and his over all talent as a scientist Nacl used NME as a shield to keep his fellow employees from ganging up on him.
So issue one: Edgy takes up their entire character. Nacl has many other traits besides his edginess, like being excited, childish or a lunatic person. He is almost always seen grinning, and has a sense of dark humour. He's cold hearted but not cold, nor is he monotone or unfeeling. Nacl has feelings, although they may not be what one would call 'normal' with his psychosis. Because he has a range of emotions that span from insane and enthusiastic in the most twisted way, to unmoving and unreadable, to full out anger or rage, unlike characters with nothing but 'bad edgy salt'. This makes him unpredictable as he is not limited to only one kind of response, whereas with 'bad edgy salt' we will always know the reaction as this character is always monotone hence will not offer surprises or make us question what their reaction will be.
Issue two: evil for the sake of being evil. No person wakes up one morning and says 'okay I'm gonna be a complete psychopath today and hurt people for no reason'. Nacl did not start out evil, but rather grew into it upon realizing being scary was like a shield and hurting others got him his way. His reason for his madness is both linked back to his mental disorder, as well as excessive torture that came with shock therapy. It was only than did he start seeking out those harming him with the intentions to kill, and he came to find it worked well and grew to love the struggle of a fight. When he joined NME his killer ways were twisted as he was curious about outcomes, Nacl's reason for his actions is his unbearable need to know what would happen, even if logically the answer would be 'well they'll probably die'. The bottom line is he has motives for his actions, such he didn't suddenly magically get, but rather developed. Your oc should have a very good reason to take a life or do the things they do considered evil, establish a goal that your character will put their faith and belief in. Should your character be 'born evil', perhaps made to be that way, be sure to establish exactly how they feel about it, if they are innocently preforming acts of evil having never been told its wrong, or if they are aware and doing it for the sake of self identity?
Issue three: Too many bodies. Too many edgy ocs I've come across have such a high body count it's not impressive, it's not scary, it's simply annoying and ridiculous. As I mentioned before, in what universe is there not some police force or hero person who seeks to stop the one hurting others? Pray tell when you've killed entire families and billions of other people, you've done this over how much time? You may be asking how many bodies is reaching illogical numbers? First consider your character's powers, skills and mental well being. Nacl is able to kill people with a mix of his ability to immobilize others via touch before proceeding to use them to answer a question he has asked himself, for example wondering if a person can bleed to death through having their teeth ripped out. His mental state lets him kill without hesitation or guilt, and his powers give him an edge as he can stop struggle with his touch. However when it comes to a direct kill, his power only effects his singular victim, making him only able to kill one person at a time, it takes awhile for him to complete his reason for killing in the first place. Should he do something like poison food or drinks, he needs to plan it, wait until there are no witnesses, than proceed, which too takes awhile. So Nacl's body count was limited to often just one or two a day at most based on his abilities, skill and mental well being. Next step comes the how often can your oc do this sort of thing and is there someone or something to stop them? Nacl is still a living person, and he requires food, water, sleep and he has to fulfill his addictions as well as preform his expected work. His coworkers will actively avoid Nacl as they know he's dangerous, and Stolren, Nacl's only true friend is against Nacl killing and will try to talk him out of it or distract him. With all these factors against Nacl his body count is kept low.
So to go over, make sure your edge lord has more than just being edgy going for them, make sure they have a reason for why they act the way they do, give them a goal and a backstory, explain to the reader what has made them a force of evil. Do not go crazy with the salt to the point its simply impossible, if they are a murderer keep in mind that there should be many opposing forces, murder in most cases should not be easy to get away with. There should always be the risk of being captured and locked up if your character decides to be bad, or in over all, a consequence every time they murder or preform an evil act. Keep in mind not every edgy character needs to be physically violent or have powers or be powerful, an edgy person can simply be someone that only the negative sides of things. While some people will fear or hate the evil character, there should always be one character who seeks to be the hero and stop your villain or salty character from hurting others, or as most heroes do, save the salt from themselves by redeeming them.
