The Rope

Author's Note: I've decided to give the chapters actual titles. Sorry for any confusion. :P

If history class isn't the most boring class on earth, then I don't know what is.

Of course, there were two guys who managed to make it a bit more interesting at the end of last year, when we all had to present our final oral reports.

I was currently staring at the backs of their heads now.

Ted Logan and Bill Preston: high school celebrities. Ever since their stunt last year in front of all of San Dimas High, their names were known.

They could be obnoxious at times, but from what I've seen of them, their hearts are in the right place. We never really talked much except for the "I know you" nod as we pass in the hall.

Ted, the one directly in front of me, began moving in his seat. Next thing I knew, he was turned around, facing me. Since I was half asleep, the sudden face in mine startled me into reality just a little bit.

"You got a pen I can use?" He murmured, lips barely moving so he wouldn't get in trouble.

I dug around in my bag for a second until I found one and passed it up.

He nodded a thanks and turned around again. I watched his bushy black hair flop as he faced forward again.

It's amazing the things that entertain you when you're bored and tired.

I was staring at the back of Ted Logan's head and it kept my attention more than World War 1. It was taking everything in me not to fall asleep.

Okay thank God the bell just rang, but I really don't want to go to gym class.

I lazily put my books away, torn between being late to gym and not having to do as much or not getting detention for being late.

I was so focused on the flap of my bag that I hardly paid attention to Ted in front of me until there was a pen in my face.

"You keep it," I finally managed to say.

"Thanks," he said. He was lingering. I fixed my glasses on my nose and racked my brain for something to say. I really hated interacting with people I didn't know well.

He and Bill are basically waiting for me to say something. What I wanted to say was to tell them to go away and let me pack my books, but I faltered, and spit out,

"You guys should teach history instead, at least your report kept my interest."

I stood up and the boys moved with me.

Why? Just go to class or something.

"Thanks dude," Bill said cheerily. He tried to look me in the face but I found that my eyes were trained on his midriff, sticking out from under his white shirt.

They weren't exactly bad-looking guys, and I didn't know why they suddenly felt like talking. It was only a pen I lent you, forget it and move on, please.

"I gotta get to gym, guys," I told them, pulling my bag from my locker, looking for an excuse to leave. Small talk was not my strong suit.

"Yeah, we know. You're in our class, remember?" Ted said.

Yes. I remember. You brained me with a dodgeball last month.

"Oh yeah," I shrugged.

"You were the one who got me in the jewels with the soccer ball!" Bill piped up in remembrance. I winced.

"Ohh, yeah... man, I'm sorry," I stuttered.

Thanks for a cringey memory and another topic of discussion I didn't need.

We got to the gym and finally parted ways, but I cringed even harder when I saw that we'd be climbing the rope today.

Heights need to go take a long walk off a short pier. Business was my thing, not athletics.

I got changed in my usual corner of the room. The rope wouldn't be so bad if we didn't have to do it in front of everyone... and if it wasn't... 15 feet off the ground...

Crap, I really should've skipped gym today. I'd take the detention, suspension, anything over heights.

It took me way too long to tie my sneakers.

I tried to make my way to the way back of the line so I might not have to climb today, but much to my displeasure, we were going in alphabetical order by last names.

Elwood.

Why couldn't I have a better last name??? Maybe one that started with a Z...

I watched the boys' line akwardly, just because I knew Bill and Ted better than the girls around me.

Everyone seemed to be climbing pretty well, and the lines were going fast.

My turn. Crap crap crap.

I bought myself an extra minute by tying my sneaker again. Maybe if I throw up they'll excuse me...

I placed my hands around the thick, coarse rope and breathed in. Then out. Then in. Then out. Do they know I'm stalling?

I started trying to pull myself up. My sneakers clung to the bottom as I worked hand over hand. My feet slipped against the rope and my hands were starting to burn a little.

I was hardly a foot off the ground and already I was terrified enough to quit.

Through the burning sensation on my fingers and my crippling fear of heights, I only managed to get halfway up. Fear took over and I couldn't go up or down.

My arms wanted to give out. Panting, I made the mistake of looking down. My stomach took a swoop and a flip and my fingers were clammy.

"I-I-I...I can't go higher," I finally called, praying that my arms could hang on longer.
"I'm...I'm too scared."

My slick hands slipped.

There was someone I didn't know below me; sandy brown hair was all I could really see without getting a panic attach from the height.

"It's okay," he said from below me, "you can drop if you need to." There was something calming about his voice.

I stole a glance down. Ted was there, as well as Bill and the kid I didn't know. My heart stopped.

"O-Okay... I'm coming down..."
My hands released finally, red and raw. I was only about 5 or 6 feet off the ground. Ted's hands were around my legs immediately, since he was almost 6 feet tall. I fell back and accidentally punched Bill in the face. The other guy sort of awkwardly caught me around the shoulders.

Somehow, I ended up twisting my ankle, and Bill's nose was bleeding. The entire gym class was either cringing or laughing at how stupid I must have looked.

My face flushed red and I hurried to say a sorry to the guys. The blonde put an arm around me to get the weight off my bad foot.

The gym teacher came hurrying over with a cloth for Bill. He picked up my glasses from the ground and handed them back to me.

"Ted, River, take these two to the nurse's office, we should get some ice on that...,"

Bill squeezed the cloth to his nose. River--apparently that was his name-- tightened his grip around my waist so I could hobble with him.

The four of us were excused from class as we headed to the office. It was quiet, except for Bill occasionally sniffing and wiping the blood from his nose, or me wincing every other step.

"Um... I'm really sorry about this," I stammered, face red hot with embarrassment.

"You got all 3 of us out of having to climb the rope, no need to apologize," Ted snickered, wandering around behind us with nothing really to do.

"So what's your name?" River asked, looking down at me. "I never heard them say."

"Lucky," I told him, staring down at my bruising ankle instead of anyone's face.

"Are you lucky?" Bill asked me, pulling the towel off his face to see if the bleeding lessened.

"Superstitious, more or less. I've got a lucky rabbits' foot...,"

"So your name's actually Lucky?" Ted responded. He seemed impressed.

"Nah, it's a nickname. I like it though."

The three nodded in agreement.

We fell into a little silence again until I noticed Bill and Ted humming Metallica. Subconsciously, I hummed along while we ambled down the hall.

Bill raised an impressed eyebrow at me.

"Excellent, you like Metallica too?"

I shrugged and winced a little bit, "My did listened to them a lot."

Bill and Ted exchanged glances of approval. River smirked a little and opened the office door.

"Hey, thanks for taking me down here," I finally said as River pulled his hand from around my shoulder.

"No problem," he smiled, giving me a quick pat on the arm before heading back to class.

"Get better soon, dude. And... ba- uh-- dudette," Ted said with a little smile. Bill took River's place and led me in the office, seeming completely unphased at the fact that I was the one who caused his nosebleed.

When someone can sit there and smile at the person who kicked them in the face and crack jokes like they've known them forever, you know something great is bound to happen....
