Using Ties

Not everyone can use ear loops. For those with behind-the-ear hearing aids, certain skin conditions or middle ear infections, being able to use ties will be preferable.

You will need 4 ties, one for each corner.

Unlike the ear loops, where whatever you have will likely work,  you should use a material that will be easy to tie and untie without damaging the ties or having them tangle while trying to work behind one's head. Also unlike the ear loops, the ties should not stretch.

Some examples are shoelaces, narrow ribbon, the cord from a drawstring or an old hoodie, or, for crochet enthusiasts, scraps of worsted weight yarn. Ties can also be sewn using material from the masks themselves.

Here are directions for making some ties:

From Mask Material:

Cut 4 strips of material,  1 inch (2.5 cm) wide by 9 inches (23 cm) long. You will definitely want an iron for this, especially if you are using a sewing machine.

I used scrap material, which wasn't exactly long enough, so I sewed 2 longer lengths together and cut to size. (Right side together, sew across end.

Open the tie, pin the hem flat, and iron it to make it easier to work with.  (Note, I was in a hurry and skipped this step. )

Fold the tie in half the long way, wrong sides together. Pin and iron. (I did NOT skip this!)

Remove pins as you iron. When the tie is cool, fold the sides in toward the center fold and pin, so that you have folded the entire thing into 1/4 of the original width. Iron again to hold it flat while you sew.

For crochet:

Using a G or H hook (depending on the diameter of your scrap yarn,) ch. 51. Sl. st. in second chain from hook and in each chain, 50 stitches. Tie off. Make 4; stitches should be tight, but easy to work with.
