9. Not now Emma
I open my eyes very slowly and then quickly and stare in shock. The first thing I saw was the lens of the camera Zhan was holding in my face to take a picture of my eyebrows. Um, what the heck? He grinned and pointed at my hair, then he said, "You have a little hair problem up there."
Quickly, I grabbed my phone, took advantage of the reflection, and grumbled. My head looked like I'd run through a storm at a minimum of 180 hours per mile. And that couldn't be fixed by trying to flatten everything out.
And it didn't get any better when then Zhan tapped my standing out hair and laughed. "That looks so funny." He said and immediately took a few more pictures. Pretty great, I'm sure he' going to remember me with that.
After Zhan finally took the camera out of my face and recovered from his laughing fit, he let me get up and go to the bathroom. I took a shower and then changed my clothes. I sat down at the table in the living room and stared darkly at Zhan as he immediately started laughing again, because he was looking at the pictures again. Suri then slapped him on the back of the head, which led to a chase.
And then someone should say that I am childish!
Since we had no supplies here, it was called shopping. In the whole town we found only one small supermarket, where everyone stared at us, as if we were extraterrestrials and just landed here. But it could also have been Emma, who wore a skirt no larger than a handkerchief that covered only the most necessary.
The woman at the register who looked like she had just returned from a fishing boat then asked, "You're not from around here are you?"
"How did you guess?" I asked her.
She laughed and said, "Around here, no one dresses as fancy as you do."
"Oh that doesn't matter. We still feel comfortable here. I mean it's unusual to work in a supermarket and look like you just came back from fishing. But I guess that's the standard here and you don't know any different." Said Emma.
We all turned to her and looked at her in horror. She just shrugged her shoulders and pretended to be a princess. "So Zhan, at some point you're going to have to explain to me why she's your best friend. I kind of don't get it." I said and left the supermarket as fast as I could. Man that was so embarrassing. And the way everyone was looking at us. Creepy! I guess we better barricade and lock the doors tonight!
Since we were all hungry, we decided to go to this little cafe and order breakfast. People kept staring at us and I was already getting goosebumps from their stares.
At the café, we sat down at a table and heard a few other guests complaining. "Aren't those the assholes who made fun of Luna at the supermarket?" Asked one.
The other nodded and replied, "They should be banned from coming in here. They should really be ashamed to judge a hard working woman because of her clothes."
I muttered in response, "I didn't say or do anything. I'm innocent." The two women looked at me challengingly and I quickly looked away. How could they even know about what was in the supermarket when they were sitting here in the café? Creepy, I can only say it over and over again.
The more they stared at us, the more my own imagination went crazy with me. In my imagination, we come out of the cafe and an angry mop of villagers is waiting for us with pitchforks and torches. They chase us through the village and then, just before we can escape, will grab us and chop us up.
"Earth to Yibo. Attention please." Shouted Zhan in my ear. Another inch and he would have kissed my ear. I wouldn't have minded.
"What happened?" I finally asked, after suppressing the thought of a kiss from Zhan, on my ear.
"What do you want to eat?" He asked.
"Mhhh, a roll and scrambled eggs." I replied and competed in staring, with one of the two old women, until a man joined and he asked me if I had something in my eye.
Zhan put his hand on my cheek, turned my head around to face him, and went to check on my eye to see if there really was something in there. "You have a very caring brother." Said the man.
"Hey, he's not my brother." I replied and Zhan immediately pulled my face back to him. He patted my face and kept checking by my eyes until he was convinced my eyes were fine. And the best part, Emma kept calling to Zhan and he didn't respond.
When Emma got fed up, she knocked on the table and Zhan said, "Not now Emma!" And in a pretty sharp tone of voice.
"You Zhan, you know that's embarrassing how you're here checking my face like I' m a toddler, right?" I asked him after he was still touching my face. Had we been alone, no problem, I would have told him he could do that as long as he wanted. But not here with my new arch-nemesis staring at me again.
Breakfast came quite quickly and tasted as it looked, not good. The scrambled eggs were still partially liquid, my roll apparently already a week old and I do not even want to talk about my "fresh" lemonade. So sour, there it curls the toenails. But since I was very hungry, after there was only rabbit food last night, I kind of choked it down.
Well, at least that got me an awarding look from my arch-enemy. I'm sure she knew exactly what I had in front of me. Surely she thought I was giving up, but I didn't, I fought like a man and won!
When we wanted to leave the café again, my arch-enemy called to me: "Take care, little one. See you next time."
I turned around and replied, "You're maybe five feet tall and that's in heels, who do you think is little of us here?" Zhan grabbed me by the collar of my shirt and pulled me behind him.
"Yibo, tell me what's wrong with you? She's just an old woman." Said Zhan as he took my hand, probably unintentionally, and led me to the car.
"She's not just an old woman. She's my new arch-enemy." I explained and Zhan suddenly laughed out loud.
"Your what? Arch-enemy? Wow Yibo, I like you more and more. It's never boring with you." Replied Zhan in a peal of laughter. Haha, he said he liked me.
Back at our beach house, Zhan said he was already going to prepare lunch. I saw Emma was going to join him. So I had to do something. I pushed past her and stood next to Zhan and said I would help him. Because I can learn a little bit about cooking in the process.
Emma immediately objected and grumbled that she was about to offer her help. Zhan, however, again just said, "Not now Emma." She got angry and stormed outside towards the water. Suri followed her and winked at me. Finally alone with Zhan.
There was just one tiny problem. Zhan was explaining what I could do and I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about. But luckily he sat down next to me and then explained it to me after I probably looked at him like he was talking about train station suitcase stealing.
He sat very close to me and I thought of the words from Suri that I should not behave like a fanboy. But the scent of his skin, this very subtle scent of sandalwood rose to my nose and I looked him straight in the eye while he explained everything to me and all I could think about then was, Awww he's so cute.
And then all of a sudden he was very quiet and we just looked into each other's eyes. I immediately had the feeling again as if time had stopped and he was looking directly into my soul. Unfortunately, this moment didn't last very long either, at least it didn't seem that way to me. Because Emma came back into the house and asked if we didn't all want to go swimming first, before "we" took care of the food.
Zhan looked at her really annoyed and told her, "It's already 01:30 pm now and if we don't prepare the food now, we won't have lunch today. And don't think I want to stand in the kitchen much longer tonight. So I'll finish this with Yibo now and then we can go to the beach."
"But you said we'd use the time at the beach to have fun."
"Yes, I did. But still, we have to eat. And I'm certainly not going to let my little sister and Yibo go hungry just because you don't want to go swimming alone."
"But Zhan, I..." Began Emma her sentence but Zhan immediately interrupted her.
"I'm not here for you, remember that!" Said Zhan. Then he handed me a cutting board and a knife, gave me a green cucumber and told me how to cut it. Emma walked away in a huff.
"She's not usually like this. I don't know what's wrong with her right now." Explained Zhan to me without me asking him for an explanation.
"She's jealous." I replied.
"Jealous?"
"Mhm, because you're not giving her your full attention like she might be used to."
"That's no reason to get jealous. She'd better get used to the fact that she can't always be the center of attention."
"You're probably right Zhan."
"And you and I, we're going to make lunch now."
"Do you feel like going for a walk on the beach tonight?" I asked Zhan while slicing the green cucumber.
Zhan looked at me thoughtfully for a moment and replied, "Sure, why not."
"Um, is it okay if it' just you and me?"
"Sure. I hadn't assumed now that you'd want to take the two girls."
"Yeah you're right Zhan. So is that really ok for you?"
"Sure it is. After the dinners? Or whenever you want. We could also wait until dark. I guess here we should have a breathtaking view of the starry sky at night."
"So we could go after dinner and stay until dark." Yes I'm pushing my luck.
"We can do that too. Then we can take our towels and go swimming in between. I have seen on the Internet such a small bay near here. We could see if we can find it and then stay there for a while."
"I'd love to. But what about Emma? I know Suri won't mind, but your best friend won't be thrilled."
"Well, like I said. I'm not here for her. I only brought her because she's my best friend and she asked me."
"I understand." I replied. So Suri was right when she told me a few days ago that Zhan was only here because of her and me and that actually it wasn't planned by him that his best friend accompany us.
As we continued to prepare the food, I kept thinking that I would be alone with Zhan for a few hours later. I can't really believe it yet. My dream man and I all alone on the beach, just like I wanted. Just Zhan, me and the sea! What could be more beautiful?
