26. The big day
When I entered the wedding hall, I was speechless. Everything was beautifully decorated and coordinated. Roses wherever you looked. And several cute red rose bears with white rose bellies sat spread out in the hall, surrounded by a flood of pink, white and red rose petals.
Silk scarves hung from the ceiling in a warm red and large pictures of Zhan and me had been placed everywhere. The red carpet down the aisle looked very classy. Every single chair had been covered with a white silk cover. Although everything was decorated, it didn't look cluttered, but inviting.
Our guests arrived one by one and I could hardly wait to finally see Zhan in his wedding suit. Unfortunately, we hadn't been allowed to spend the night together before our wedding, which meant I barely slept.
Cheng messaged me earlier saying that Zhan looks AMAZING and also can't wait to see me and that they are on their way.
I myself am wearing a black suit that was specially tailored for me. I know that Zhan's suit is white and also perfectly tailored for him. He didn't want to tell me more.
Our parents sit in traditional dress in front of the wedding hall and welcome our guests. My brother and Cheng assign the guests their seats.
The hall was filling up and there was a lot of talking. I stood there watching everything with my heart pounding. I was so nervous and didn't know what else to do but stare at the door. Seungyoun who is my best man is unfortunately with Wooseok all the time instead of standing with me.
I was about to scold Seungyoun and tell him that today his place is by my side when I saw a very familiar face. Suri. My best friend who said she couldn't come is here!
Suri ran up to me and almost jumped into my arms, "You didn't really think I was going to miss out on my best friend and big brother's wedding did you? Unfortunately, I had to lie a little bit to be able to surprise you."
I was so happy to see her that I hugged her tightly. Then Suri turned to Seungyoun and called out to him, "You're OUT as best man. You're doing a shitty job. Yibo is standing here all alone, even though you should be standing here by his side. I'll take over now and stand by Yibo as his maid of honor."
Seungyoun came to us and apologized to me. He said that Wooseok was not feeling well and that was why he was with him all the time. "Oh don't come up with excuses now. You forgot your duty as Yibo's best man. If it weren't for his big brother and Cheng, Yibo wouldn't have even had a bachelor party. Cheng told me everything. I understand that you love Wooseok, but as Yibo's best man and best friend, you should stand by his side and help him." Suri replied.
"No fighting today, okay? Today Yibo is getting married, so please get along." Said my brother as he joined us. Suri and Seungyoun nodded.
I don't know why Suri and Seungyoun can't stand each other for three years and start fighting as soon as they see each other. I had asked both of them about it once, but neither of them really wanted to come out with the words. Since neither of them wanted to talk about it and I can't force them to tell me anything, I left it at that and didn't ask anymore.
When all guests were seated, the two large white double doors were closed. Soft music sounded over the loudspeakers. A pianist sat down at the piano and the wedding speaker also took his seat. When my family took their seats and I saw my mother wiping tears from her eyes with a handkerchief, I knew it was time.
I almost started to cry myself, I was so full of anticipation. My stomach was tingling like crazy, my heart was pounding hard and fast against my chest, and my hands were shaking. Suri stood next to me, smiled and whispered, "You've been waiting for this day for a long time and finally it's here. I am so incredibly happy for you, my best friend and brother-in-law." At that point, tears really came out of my eyes.
Zhan's mother came into the wedding hall and sat down. She signaled to the pianist. The lights dimmed, twinkling lights from the ceiling began to glow, the doors slowly opened and I saw my Zhan and his father.
Wearing a beautiful white suit, Zhan let his father bring him down the red carpet and to me. My brain forgot to command my lungs to breathe for a moment at the sight of Zhan. I just stood there breathlessly staring at my beautiful Zhan.
Zhan's father reached out his hand to me and said, "I officially give you my son. Please always take good care of him and continue to love him as passionately as you have for many years." Then he put Zhan's hand and mine together and we turned and walked up the three steps to the altar.
The wedding officiant began his work and I just waited for the all-important question, and then when the officiant got there after 20 minutes and asked Zhan if he wanted to marry me and Zhan with a loud, "Yes. Absolutely!" Answered, I felt incredibly relieved.
Then, when it was my turn, Zhan looked at me with wide eyes. I smiled and looked deep into his eyes as I said, "Yes, I do."
We were each supposed to give a short speech, but instead Zhan and I planned something else. Secretly and without anyone else knowing.
We turned around to our parents and I said, "Mom, Dad, mother-in-law and father-in-law. Instead of boring you all with our praises for each other, we thought of something and hope you will join us. We want you to renew your wedding vows here and now. This has already been arranged and we have bought bouquets especially for you mothers. Would you do us this favor?"
Our parents looked at each other questioningly and finally they nodded. My mother immediately jumped up and asked, "Where is my bouquet? I would give my wedding vows again to this wonderful husband anytime. Because I still love him as much as I did when I first met him."
Zhan's father stood up, knelt down in front of his wife and said, "You are and will always be my great love, and I can't imagine anything more beautiful than giving you my yes word again today."
With that, the matter was settled. Our parents sat down again and the wedding ceremony of Zhan and me was ended with, "I now pronounce you husband and husband. You are now allowed to kiss each other."
Zhan and I gave each other a kiss and then our parents were taken outside where they received makeup. Our mothers received their bridal bouquets and when they were ready, they came back and said their vows again.
My father cried the entire time and finally said, "My beautiful wife has been by my side for almost 35 years now and I am happy and thankful, every single day. You have not only given me your steadfast love all these years, but also our two wonderful sons, of whom I am proud every day. I still love you as I did then, and to me there is no woman more beautiful than you."
Zhan's father said to his wife, "Because of you, I have learned what it means to have unconditional love. Because I feel it for you every day and have done so for more than 41 years now. You are as beautiful, warm and loving as when I first met you and fell in love with you. Thanks to you, we have two great children of whom we can be proud. And we got two great sons-in-law in addition. I am glad that we have overcome every hurdle in our life together and are still happily married. I love you my heart and that will never change. Because for me, there is only you."
The wedding speaker performed the marriage renewal and finally not only one couple on the red carpet left the wedding hall, but three couples. Since the hall was being rearranged, for the wedding celebration, it meant for us to wait outside. In this time, we took a lot of wedding pictures. Suri took pictures of Zhan and me. Zhan and I took pictures of our parents and guests.
After half an hour we could enter the wedding hall again and there tables were set up in a U shape and nicely decorated. Since Zhan and I still had plans, namely to leave for our honeymoon in Alaska as early as possible, the food was served quickly.
After dinner, we then cut the wedding cake and left the rest to our families because we had to hurry to get to the airport.
Our suitcases, already packed, were already in the limousine we had ordered. We said goodbye to our families, friends and relatives, got into the limo and drove away.
I smiled and said to Zhan, "I didn't get a chance to tell you how beautiful you look today and how much I missed you last night."
Zhan put his head on my shoulder and said, "I married the best looking man in the world. And I didn't sleep for a minute last night because I missed you so much." Then we kissed each other.
Once we arrived at the airport, we dropped off our bags and boarded the plane. I had to smile when the two American flight attendants looked at us with wide eyes and asked if we were still single. Zhan laughed and said, "No, I just married this man here next to me, just a few hours ago."
The two of them congratulated us and one of them took us to the first class. Zhan and I sat down and Zhan clung to my arm. He glared at the flight attendant, who stared at me incessantly and completely oblivious. When she noticed Zhan's stare, she quickly walked away. Probably better that way for her, unless she wants to know Zhan's unfriendly side.
For almost the entire flight, Zhan and I just slept. When we landed in Alaska, we had to change to another small plane, which then took us to our destination. It landed in the middle of the water and we were picked up by a fisherman by boat.
The fisherman then took us to our rented cabin where we just put our bags down for now, went outside and breathed in the fresh air. I looked around and when I saw that we were alone, I shouted as loud as I could, "I finally married the man of my dreams and I'm overjoyed."
Zhan laughed loudly and shouted, "I also married my dream man and nothing in the world could make me happier."
I can't believe it, three years I waited for this day and then it was over so quickly. But this day, was for me one of the most beautiful days in my whole life. Even though we left our own wedding party so early, we were happy and enjoyed every moment.
Now we have two weeks of Alaska and loneliness ahead of us. A time when there is only Zhan and me. No phones, no computers, no customers. Just him and me and the vast wild nature around us.
