22. Back in Beijing
We waited for Emma at the restaurant for over an hour, but she never showed up. Then when Zhan called her to ask where she was, she said she forgot all about it and was just on her way to Chicago for a modeling job she got in at the last minute. Great, we wasted our time for that.
Right from the restaurant, we took a cab to the airport. An hour later, we were on the plane. Zhan and I talked there again about wanting to move in together. Actually, we wanted to tell our parents as soon as possible, but now, after we slept on it for a night, we want to give ourselves a few more weeks. After all, we've only been together a week.
The first two hours on the plane were very quiet. A lot of people just slept. Zhan and I talked about our parents and our plans to move in together and then want to sleep as well. But then it got chaotic and loud. And all because of two 7 year old boys. Twins who have made it their mission to really get on the nerves of everyone who isn't in first class like their parents.
At first they chased each other through the hallways, laughing out loud and it was ok. But after they had been doing that for 15 minutes, it got really annoying. Then they ran through the aisles, banging their hands on the passengers' seat backs.
They bounced, screeched, argued, threw their ball back and forth. And the flight attendants had their hands full with just them. But these guys didn't listen. A man from one of the front seats yelled at one of the flight attendants and said, "If you don't get a hold of these kids right now, I'm going to grab these two and beat them up."
I suspect he got so angry because his very pregnant wife was sitting next to him and needed rest. But instead, these two brats were making so much noise that even the most patient person could lose their nerve.
After more than an hour of continued terror, which didn't seem to end for the time being, many passengers were beside themselves and shouted loudly for the flight attendants to take these boys to their parents. Shortly thereafter, the parents appeared in our class and said that they had an anti-authoritarian upbringing with their children, so that they could develop freely.
Of course, the passengers disagreed with them completely. And even Zhan called out to them, "Anti-authoritarian is all well and good, yet they should have rules and boundaries. Especially on an airplane!"
The American parents, however, didn't care what anyone else said, so they just let the two 7-year-old terrorists continue to play wild sow in the aisle with us.
I had seriously thought about just sticking my foot out when one of them came running through our aisle again. I could already imagine the kid falling on his nose and running back to his parents. But, of course, I didn't do it.
Instead, there was an older man. He reminded me somehow of my grandpa. He had a box of snacks with him. He opened it, took out an egg, took aim and cracked it right into the forehead of one of the kids. Oh yes, he really could be my grandfather.
The brat cried and the other brat yelled until a small tomato hit him in the forehead. "That was just an egg without a shell and a tomato boys. Did you want to stay here and find out if I can hit with apples too?" Asked the old one. The two brats ran crying back to the first class. The man got applause from all of us.
After that we heard nothing like five minutes of crying, then they terrorized all of in the first class. Until something happened and one of the flight attendants asked if there was a doctor present. A man came forward and went with her to first class. When he returned 15 minutes later, he told us one of the boys had tripped. He must have hit his lip and his nose was bleeding too.
The rest of the flight was quiet. When we landed we saw the injured boy being carried by his father. His face was full of blood. I almost felt sorry for him, but only almost.
We didn't land directly in Beijing, but where we took off from. Zhan's car was still there, so we had to go back there. It would take us a while to get home and it was already almost night. Therefore we booked a hotel room near the airport, super ugly and then super expensive.
After this exhausting flight, we were already almost too exhausted for our, every day means every day ritual. But not too exhausted, which is why we were able to do it anyway.
In the morning we had a quick breakfast and then immediately set off. Once an hour, I wrote my parents an update on where we were and how much longer it would take us. My dad was already totally excited and wrote me that he was happy that his BoBo was finally coming home. And I was excited as well.
As we turned into my street, Zhan suddenly started laughing and pointed to a banner on my parents' house. "Welcome back Yibo and Zhan" and that with many hearts. Ah, I should have known they would do something crazy again.
My parents were standing in front of the house and, they were not alone. Zhan's parents were there as well. Through Suri and me, our parents became friends two years ago. They meet regularly and hang out.
Zhan's mom held up a sign saying "We love you YiZhan" and his dad had a big picture of Zhan and me in his arms. I know Zhan sent it to him as proof that we were really together. I guess Zhan just didn't think that he would have it printed in huge and greet us with it. I'm really starting to think my parents' craziness is contagious.
When Zhan parked the car, my dad came running up to me as soon as I got out of the car. He hugged me as tightly as if I had been missing for 2 years and had just reappeared. I loved it. It proves to me every time how much my parents love me and even miss me like crazy even if I am gone just for a week.
My mom kissed my face and whispered in my ear, "I love you son and I am incredibly proud of you. Welcome home." Meanwhile, Zhan was greeted warmly by his parents.
Even my brother was there and he was not alone. With him had been his boyfriend Cheng and as my brother greeted me, he quietly said to me, "I think my Cheng is cuter than your Zhan."
"Haha, yes very funny brother. Take a good look at my Zhan. He looks like an angel, perfect through and through. Your Cheng can't compete with that. Yes, he is cutie. But my Zhan is the icing on every cake." I replied with a grin.
Then my brother leaned over to me and whispered, "And I'm going to sleep with Cheng this weekend."
"Cool, Zhan and I have been sleeping together every night since we became a couple. Trust me, you'll love it." I said and my brother stared at me with his eyes wide open. I would have loved to stick my tongue out at him and show him my middle finger.
Unfortunately, Suri wasn't there. She extended her vacation with her boyfriend a few more days. Mhhh, they are going away together for half a year soon anyway, so they still have enough time for each other. I already miss my bubbly best friend a lot and hoped she would be there.
We all went into the house together, where Cheng had also introduced himself to me in person before he and my brother headed off for their date.
Zhan and I were sitting next to each other on the sofa in my parents' living room, and my father said with a laugh, "There's something wrong. Zhan sat on your lap last time. Why not today?"
Without taking the time to answer, Zhan sat on my lap again and my dad said, "That's better."
Zhan and I then talked about the beach house, how we got together, and then we talked about the days in the States. I told everyone that at first I thought I had traveled by plane to another universe because the people there were all so different. But by the second day it was better and I could get used to seeing some very bizarre people.
My father was about to say something when my grandparents arrived. My grandfather immediately thought again, we have a secret meeting where we plan some things that are illegal. "I told you last time, I want to be there. I can drive the getaway car." He suggested.
"Dad, I was just about to tell Yibo and his boyfriend something." Replied my father.
"Are they finally together or do we have to keep listening to Yibo's whining about how much he wants them to be together?" Asked my grandfather. And there it was again, that feeling of shame and embarrassment.
"They're a couple now, don't worry." Said my mother.
"Good, so are you all here to plan the wedding or what?" Grandpa then wanted to know.
"No dad. We were just about to tell Yibo and Zhan that the four of us have been talking for the past few days and think now that they are a couple, they might as well move into a small apartment where they can be undisturbed. And I also wanted to tell them that as their parents, we're all pitching in for the rent." Replied my dad.
Zhan and I looked at each other in surprise. "You want us to move in together?" Zhan asked his parents.
"Only if you want to, Zhan. We found an apartment near the university. It's a two-room apartment and it already has a kitchen. It's newly renovated and ready for immediately move in." His mother replied.
"Yeah right. We think you two need space for yourselves. We don't want to get rid of you, we would prefer to keep our BoBo here forever. But we also know what it's like to be young and in love. And you should have your space to do whatever you want." Explained my mother.
"Okay, fine with me." Said Zhan and I agreed with him.
We were both totally surprised and didn't really know what to say. But we were happy since we wanted to move in together anyway. Only we thought we needed more time because of our parents.
And until we can move into this apartment, Zhan and I will alternate sleeping at my parents' house and at his parents' house. Because they also want to spend some time with us as a couple.
"And in a year, you''ll be married! Remember, grandpa and I are already old. We still want to see our favorite grandson get married." Everyone stared at my grandma.
"What are you guys looking at? Better start planning. And don't worry about the cost of the wedding, Grandma and I will cover that. We set up a savings account especially for that when our Yibo was born. And believe me, there's enough money in it to make this wedding a huge event!" Added my grandpa.
Well, what else could we say to that? Apparently, my grandma and grandpa already had plans too. And the two of them will not be kept from it. They are just as stubborn as I am. Maybe that's why they always say that I'm their favorite grandson. Anyway, Zhan and I will probably get married in a year. Wow, just, wow.
