9 The Librarian
Bill, uncharacteristically spent a lot of time in his room on the phone to Heather and disappearing at weekends to locations unspecified. Fiona was sworn to secrecy by both Bill and Heather with regards to their budding romance. When quizzed, Fiona would shrug and reply 'you know as much as I do'. Bill would spend hours quizzing Fiona about Heather at every opportunity afforded to them and Heather would do the same either in phone calls or numerous letters she would send to Fiona.
Fiona would be asked to steal photos of Bill for Fiona and then pony up photos of Heather for Bill. In truth Fiona found it all quite exhausting, however, she was happy to oblige as both Bill and Heather were giddy about one another. Richard and Dan were equally loved up too with Nikki and Lyn which meant that Fiona, David and Emlyn spent a lot of time together.
In particular Fiona and David had similar schedules which meant they would visit museums, galleries, theatre and cinema together. When it was only the two of them in the house at night they would often stay up late chewing the fat, with Fiona educating David on the finer points of Scottish bands of the 80s and 90s, John Hughes Films and Scottish football. David would talk to her about his parents, family, the rules of baseball, basketball and American football.
She made David a mix tape of Scottish bands

The whole house had been kept informed of The Librarian and Emlyn's long awaited crack at her. She worked in the library in his business and she was notorious throughout the City of London for shagging her way through all of the eligible men within the business then leaving and moving on to the next business. Emlyn joined his new architectural firm a year ago and by all intents and purposes he was very close to his big night in the spotlight. On his allotted night Fiona and David set him off with confidence and a twelve pack of ribbed condoms.
Fiona cooked dinner and after his run, David picked up a tub of Ben & Jerry's finest and a bottle of red wine from Harts the Grocers on Fulham Road. After dinner, they both slobbed out on different ends of the couch. The film choice of the night was Pretty in Pink.
"You know I blame Molly Ringwald for my thing with red heads." he nudged her with his leg.
"Never stand a chance mate, she is too clever and far too opinionated for you. You like them vacuous like their fanny's." Fiona retorted, David laughed and threw a cushion at her.
"So you are telling me that you would have hung out for Duckie then?" David enquired.
"You know that Duckie's view of Blane was right all along, he will break her heart. I mean look at you. Anyone with an IQ over 100 can see the tattoo on you that says 'danger' or 'slippery when wet'",
David sat up. "So you are saying that clever women are immune to my charms?"
"God no Boston, they are clever, not blind. I mean you get your fair share of one-nighters from the intellectual pile I would imagine?" Fiona knew David was smart. He surprised her with his knowledge of art and literature. Every gallery they went to he knew something about each of the artists. It was very attractive.
"True, I like a clever girl as much as the next man." He looked at Fiona amused wondering what weapon of choice she would use tonight to keep them from getting together. He found that he loved her company. He wanted to know what she thought of every exhibition they had seen. He loved that no matter what museum she went to she had to buy a poster and eat a muffin in the cafe.
"And you normally are either the next man or are creating the vacancy for the next man." she giggled, "Tell me, what is your record for staying after sex. I mean time spent post your orgasm?" She wanted to know to make sure that when and if they did she could have something to measure herself against.
"Do you want longest or shortest?" David knew her game and he kept her dangling.
"Both," Fiona shook her head in mock disgust, "I knew you would have records!"
"Hump and dump. Me? I am hurt Ninj, at least you know I have a heart right?" Time to up the ante he thought.
"Yes, fifth intercostal space on the left, two inches from the sternum I believe?" Fiona pointed to her rib cage and the location of the heart.
"Well shortest, I could count in seconds and longest, well let's just say all night, cuddling, stroking, whispering, you know.. " He looked at her. Giving her confirmation that she should she bring him to her bed, they would lie together until prised apart by an external force.
"Ah, when you are in love with someone, yes I do Boston." Fiona stretched and sighed recalling those mornings. Realising the only ones she had as a point of reference, were with Paul.
David noticed the sadness on her face and decided to lighten the mood. "Right that's it then, I am of to my PRNs again, all this romance and dirty talk has revved my engine." He was so turned on. She was driving him wild and he needed a release that he could not give himself. Not that he was averse to self pleasure he just preferred to work in a team setting.
"Jeeso Boston, reading the telephone book would rev your engine." Fiona snapped back to the present and thumped David with the cushion she had across her stomach.
"If you did yes." he kissed her on the top of her head," Don't wait up babe, daddy is gonna give it to her good tonight!".
Fiona sat down to watch Ferris Bueller's Day off, resigned to another night in alone when the telephone rang. The call went to message and Fiona keened her ear to listen.
"Its Ems, Ninj are you there, please pick up!" The tone of voice alarmed Fiona, she picked the phone up immediately.
"Ems what is the problem mate?" she enquired. Emlyn sounded absolutely petrified. She thought he had been mugged or worse.
"Oh, mate thank god you are in. Please come and get me, will you? I have no idea where I am, there are no cabs and no pubs!" The anxiety in his voice was rising. Emlyn had experienced the worst trauma of his life and he was just desperate to scrub himself clean in the bath.
"Ok, ok don't worry give me the number of the phone box and I will call you back, in the meantime find a street name and postcode and I will find you on the A to Z." Fiona knew that Emlyn was in trouble. She also knew the best way to get to him was a street map and to get a move on pronto.
Fiona was the flat map reader. Due to her working in the Community Nursing Team back in the day, she could find anywhere fast. She grabbed the A-Z from the table and began the task in hand.
Fiona called him back and found that he was in Bow, the other end of town from their house. She calculated it would take her 35 minutes to get there in the mini, she was glad that David had drunk the wine and she had decided to stay off the drink that night.
She pulled the mini into the road and she could see Emlyn in the phone box. Fiona flashed the car's lights and Emlyn ran to the side of the car. It had been raining, a real Autumn chill had descended into London over the previous few days. He was shaking from the cold however she could tell that Ems looked traumatised from some event or another.
"Emlyn are you ok?" Fiona asked.
Emlyn nodded at her. Clearly unable to verbalise.
"Ems there are some blankets in the car if you want to take your coat off and warm up."
Emlyn nodded acknowledgement of what she said but stayed hunched staring ahead in the car for a full ten minutes.
"You know everyone was egging me on over this. The Librarian, hot filthy bitch, time of your life, a right of passage bull shit." he began.
Fiona could tell he wanted to unburden himself and she resolved to listen. She nodded for Emlyn to begin.
"It all started out well, we went for drinks, we had a shag in the toilets, dinner full of dirty talk then when they asked what I wanted for desert she said 'me'. I got out of there like my arse was on fire Ninj! We went back to hers and I did her every which way I knew how and some new ones. I mean I did her four times in one hour. Fuck me, that is a personal record! She gave me a blow job that hard I thought I could feel her tugging on one of my lungs. I mean my knob is glowing like a lightsaber Ninj!" Fiona silently prayed that he didn't want him to look at his dick.
"Then she says I am not satisfying her and can she bring a mate round, like a lesbian friend. Of course I, said yes. I mean I shagged both of them Ninj I did! Then wait for it, she got a strap on, and then tried to....." he bit his lip and looked out of the side window, he drew in a deep breath to calm and centre himself." She tried to do me up the wrong un, well I got out of there as fast as my legs would take me Ninj, I did, I have never been so scared in my life! It is one way traffic down there if you know what I mean?" Fiona glanced at Ems glad she had a steering wheel to hang on to and the road to concentrate on or she would have collapsed laughing, she saw he was traumatised and resolved to pull herself together for appearances sake.
"Ems that is awful, let's get you home safe." she managed without a guffaw.
She parked the car and led Emlyn to the house, made him a cup of tea and together they concocted a story to cover both him at work and with the lads.
"Thanks, Ninj, you are the very best." As Emlyn went to bed, Fiona went into the living room, picked up a cushion and laughed heartily into it for fifteen minutes solidly.
It was the September Hospital Orientation night in the pub, it was strangely subdued compared to Fiona's first experience. Bill had disappeared to Glasgow on the first train, Richard and Dan were loved up with Lyn and Nikki, David was nowhere to be seen and Emlyn given his recent experience had to down five brandies before facing any random women for the first time.
She could see David enter the bar but there was something changed about his demeanour. He was beside a very pretty, serious looking brunette who looked slightly older than him. He was very attentive to her, almost shy. It was like a punch in the guts to Fiona, she instantly could see the attraction between them.
She discovered that the pretty woman was Suzanne Dunscombe the new Anaesthetic Consultant who had joined the Hospital and had been on David's orientation group. He introduced them and Suzanne pretty much gave her a dismissive smile, put her hand in David's and asked when they were going for dinner. David whispered in her ear, she chuckled and kissed him on the cheek and moved back towards the door.
"Hey Ninj, don't wait up, I am out for dinner with Suzie." he winked and turned on his heel to follow her.
"Your face is a picture." Lyn stated to Fiona, giving her a glass of wine.
"Is it? " Fiona attempted a smile and inwardly tried to compose herself. There it was. She waited too long. He ran out of patience and found someone else.
"You know if you like him, say something, I think he is waiting for you to let him know it is ok."Lyn nodded. Lyn knew, they all knew. If you stood next to David and Fiona you got turned on by osmosis.
"Ok for what? To become another notch on the bedpost? Sorry not for me, too much self-respect Lyn I am afraid." Fiona raised her glass to Lyn. She was inwardly chiding herself.
"More like shitting yourself that you will have your heartbroken again more like," Lyn sighed, "you like him, he likes you, what are you waiting for? A sign? Cosmic intervention?"
"Oh Lyn, I don't know, I like him, I am not sure he really likes me enough in that way you know. I think he sees me more as a friend and I am happy with that. I couldn't take finding him with someone else and quite frankly I don't think he is a one woman man." There it was the truth. She didn't want to be hurt again.
"No sorry mate I am not falling for that." Lyn challenged Fiona, "You are safe in the friend zone. No risk, but I am telling you, he won't wait for ever and she looks the type to know a good thing when it comes along." Lyn nodded towards the door where Suzie and David left through.
"I might be too late looking at the two of them together." Fiona sighed, "Please don't say anything to Richard though, I don't want to be added to the mountain of women crying themselves to sleep over him, which I am not by the way, oh damn I am confused!" She finished her drink, said her goodbyes and returned back to an empty house. Fiona stayed awake as long as she could listening for David to come home. She reached 1 am when sleep overtook her.
