|9- Hearts|

Lloyd hit the deck of the ship with a soul shaking crack.

I, being petrified with fear, was unable to move. My thoughts raced round and round inside my skull, beating against the edges until my head hurt. From a seemingly outside source, I watched as the warriors ran around me and towards Leila, a vicious laugh shaking her frame, black hair swimming around her. My vision swam as I watched the fight in slow motion, rooted to the spot. My gaze slowly found Lloyd, who lay crumpled against the floorboards, a pool of crimson spreading around him. My breath hitched as everything came into focus around me and I stumbled to Lloyd's side.

I slipped, feet catching under me, and slammed my knees down next to him. With a grumble, I hoisted his head into my lap and my eyes flashed purple and my heart raced when his eyes didn't open. My breathing rapid, I played my head against his chest, trying to listen for the faint thrum of his heart.

My heart dropped into my stomach when I heard nothing.

Scrambling and frantic, I fumbled, trying to pick him up enough to get below deck. I barely managed to hook my arms under his and around his chest before pulling him clumsily down the stairs below deck. My hands shook and I felt my eyes glowing the entire time as I propped him up against a wall and ran to boil water. As quick as I could, I ripped the entire tea plant from its place on the window sill and clenched it in my hand. I jumped in my skin as the kettle whistled and I yanked it from the stove, water sloshing over the rim as I crashed beside Lloyd once more.

I threw the crumpled leave in the pot, a dark sticky purple color and swished it about before pouring a cup and holding it to Lloyd's lips. My hand found his and I held it close to me, panicked and frightened tears forming in my eyes. Whispers and prayers came from my lips, hoping and praying that his eyes would open and find mine.

His hand grew cold in my grasp and I rocked gently as the ship pitched off to one side. My heart thundered in my chest, not ready to accept the fact that this might not work. Instead I resorted to begging.

"Please, Lloyd. Please." I breathed and squeezed his cold hand tighter in mine. I clenched my eyes closed tight as they burned with tears and I did the only thing I could think of. I hummed that sweet soft tune we had spoke of that my mother and his father used to sing to us. The rhythm of the tune soothed my nerves in the slightest and I leaned my forehead against his hand, still clasped in mine. "Please..." I begged one last time and shook my head.

I sat straighter as the hand in mine wriggled the slightest and my eyes as large as the midnight moon, I met Lloyd's glowing green gaze as he blinked his eyes open slowly, leaning forward the slightest to cough.

I let out the longest sigh of relief and squeezed his hand tighter and smiled through the tears, which he barely managed to return.

"What..." he coughed and spat blood on the floor before continuing, "what happened...?"

I took a shuddering breath in and let it out slowly, willing my heart to calm. "You hit your head against the floor very hard. I am quite certain you died, but I-" my eyes flicked to the tea pot that sat beside me "-I made a tea I was not entirely sure would help."

I slid closer to him and wiped a hand down the side of his face, wiping away the tears and blood which had seeped from his head. He chuckled softly, which shook his whole body and glanced off to his my right, a smile playing at the edge of his lips. "How long have you guys been there?" He croaked and my gaze flew to follow his, meeting the rest of the battered and bruised warriors, Leila no where in sight.

I dropped his hand which flopped down on the floor with a soft thump and leaned away from Lloyd, face burning. "He will be alright." I stopped to gather the remains of the plant and the kettle, freezing as he placed a hand over mine again.

"Thank you." He whispered and after a long moment, I flashed him a quick smile before retreating to the kitchen, my heart racing in my chest.

I sat in the threshold between the deck of the ship and below deck, rain softly pattering against the ancient wood. I was on edge, anxiety prickling on my skin and making me jump at the slightest sounds. My bones felt drained and tired and my mind was void of any and all logical thoughts. I leaped, startled as Lloyd came to sit beside me, a bandage wrapped around his head, pressing his blond hair against his forehead. I diverted my gaze, instead opting to watch the drizzle pouring from the sky. He was silent, choosing not to say anything for a long while.

I skunk away, closer to the wall, tips of ears burning as I felt his gaze fall on me. He took a sharp breath in and I flinched, not knowing what he would say to me.

"That was really brave of you."

"I would beg to differ. You did not see how I stood there frozen for minutes on end before I managed to do anything." I spat and wrapped my arms around myself as scooted closer to me in the slightest.

"You still did it, nonetheless. You saved my life, Y/n." I froze, stuff as a board as his had found mine. "Thank you."

"You would have done the same." I muttered and stood, turning on my heel to leave.
