From our places seated on the floor, Wu weaved a tale wild and from long ago, one he had a hand in. My head was light after my episode but I leaned forward, intent on listening to his story, wishing to help in any way, shape, or form.
"Morro was my first student, the master of wind. I have told you of how he found me one day, but I left out another, Leila. Morro and his sister had stumbled upon my monastery, what I presume to be fate leading them there." The old man paused to sigh, shaking his head as he recalled the memories. "You will remember how I brought Morro in to train, but Leila was different.
"While he was a normal boy, born with elemental powers, she was anything but. Her arms and legs had never formed right when in her mother's womb, and thus she was disabled. All along her ran warps and blemishes which turned away others eyes from her. Despite her outward appearance, her heart held a burning passion and anger at the world. She was bitter and the only reason she was grounded was because of Morro.
"When I agreed to train Morro, I knew I would have to take in both brother and sister. Yet, Leila's anger and passion burned too bright for her to understand. She wished to be trained, too. But, due to her disability, she could not physically be trained to fight. In her eyes, anything was possible. The sky was the limit, and despite her physical limitations, she believed she could do it. When I spoke with her on how it was impossible, her heart turned to stone. She sought to leave, but when Morro said he couldn't, her anger burned even more and she fled. Neither of us ever heard from Leila again, yet..." Wu looked up and his eyes found mine and I shrunk under his gaze. "You have had visions of her. We must be expectant of her return."
At my side, Jay scoffed and I tilted my head to the side as she spoke. "But Sensei, you said she couldn't learn to fight, so why should we be worried?"
I took a breath in, placing a hand on Jay's arm as he turned to face me. "Unfortunately, my visions have never been wrong. Something horrible has come upon us and we must be ready to face it. If what Wu says is true, then Leila must have wrath to pour out. We must be vigilant and wary of what will come."
I found myself on the deck of the ship as she flew high above the clouds to the spot where the creature had been spotted. Below us spread a blanket of clouds, the sun casting warm light onto them and the ship, turning everything a bright orange. The wind ruffled my hair and I found myself humming the old familiar tune that Mother used to sing. I sat upright, startled by a voice which slid to stand beside me.
"I've heard that tune."
I glanced over and my eyes met with burning green ones, Lloyd. Surprised, my eyes widened at his words and the general fact that he had chosen to speak with me. I fumbled over my words for a moment before returning my gaze to the sea of clouds below us.
"Mother used to sing it to me whenever I would have dizzy spells just before the visions." I explained, hands absentmindedly rubbing together.
Beside me, Lloyd leaned against the railing, pulling his elbows close to his side and resting his forearms against the top of the rails. In the golden light of the sun, his eyes held a warm shine I hadn't seen before. He nodded in an understanding and continued speaking to me in a kind way he had never shown to me before. "My father would hum that tune occasionally. He never taught me the words, but from what I heard of him muttering it sometimes, it was in a different language."
I nodded, a small smile forming. "It's Oni, so it makes sense how it would seem foreign to ears not accustomed to the language. Mother never taught me the words either." I narrowed my eyes and hummed the tune once more and eventually Lloyd joined in beside me.
"I always wondered what it was about." He shrugged and I met his eyes.
"That I am unsure of. Yet still, it has always seemed to calm my nerves." I said and he nodded in response. "Why is it that you suddenly seem to trust me?"
Lloyd looked away, shaking his head. "To be honest, I'm not sure I fully trust you yet. But I saw how you were scared when the vision came on you and..." he trailed off, tilting his head to one side in thought. "Well, I just saw how you were willing to be vulnerable to help us."
"I am sorry you do not trust all Oni, Lloyd. Though, like yourself, I am only part Oni, some of them may be trusted such as my mother." I sighed and pushed away from the railing. "I do hope that eventually you will be able to see that I am trust worthy as well."
As I turned to return down to the bottom of the ship, he grabbed my wrist with a hand and his eyes flashed a bright glowing green at me. "I hope so, too. I want to trust you."
I felt my eyes flash in return, a warm joy welling up inside and I pulled my hand from his, the ship lowering through the clouds and down closer to the earth. "Preferably sooner rather than later seeing as we have reached our destination."
