INT. LIBERTY HIGH – NEXT DAY

Sophie walks down the hall reading How to Fail at Life. She sees Tray heading in her direction.

SOPHIE

(reading) "Ignore the people you want to get to know." All I have to do is say hi.

She puts her book down.

SOPHIE (CONT'D)

Hey, Tray.

TRAY

Hey!

He waits for her to continue, but that's all she's got.

TRAY (CONT'D)

Have a nice day.

They try to part ways but keep blocking each others' paths. Tray stops and gestures for her to go ahead.

SOPHIE

Actually, I'm that way.

She turns around and walks away, mortified. Jackie stands by, witnessing the entire thing.

JACKIE

Smooth.

JACKIE (CONT'D)

(re: book) How to Fail at Life. Sounds like a real page-turner. Why would you read that?

SOPHIE

It's helping me get out of my comfort zone.

JACKIE

You should come to our drama club meeting. We could use the help and it's a great way to break out of your shell.

SOPHIE

I was thinking baby steps.

JACKIE (CONT'D)

For real change, you're going to have to dive head first. No more excuses. I'll see you there.

She exits. Sophie tries to calm herself.

SOPHIE

Don't panic. Don't panic.

She notices students staring at her. She silently calms herself down with hand gestures and walks away.
