Chapter 18
Kalinowski blew the whistle.
"Great game! Ladies and gentlemen, as promised, the winning team doesn't clean up the gym," she announced.
Dick spat on the floor in anger.
"Hey you, wannabe Ronaldo, thought you're a soccer star, decided to spit on the field. Well, let me remind you, this isn't a field, and you're not a famous athlete. Grab a mop and clean this mess solo. Your squad's out. After cleanup, we're hitting up the principal's office," she snarled.
The class cheered for Dick. Bianca clapped the loudest. Everyone except Dick headed to the locker rooms.
I was stoked, surrounded by my crew and Bianca. They fist-bumped me and thanked me for helping snag the win.
I sneaked glances at Bianca. She looked content. Her body radiates warmth, and her cheeks flush. I've never seen anything more beautiful.
A nudge brought me back to reality.
"Is this yours, newbie?" Irene asked, holding up my black jacket like it was trash. "Where'd you score this dud?" she sneered.
I shrank back. My buzz was gone. I knew this tracksuit would bite me in the butt.
"She bought it with me," Bianca jumped in. She stood tall, hand on hip, and curved like a model. "This jacket is made from eco-friendly materials. I read about it online. Can you read, Irene?" the school queen asks loudly, as if speaking to someone mentally challenged. "And who made your clothes, girl, illegal child labour in Bangladesh?"
I burst out laughing. Couldn't help it. Irene's face was priceless.
"Dang, Bianca, you killed it!"
"I need one of those," one of the cheerleaders with cute curls and dimples said.
"I'm trying it on, ok?" Bianca told me.
I nodded, "Sure thing! Yes, yes..."
"How's it look?" the queen asked her servants. They were all about that Bianca glow, but she was vibing in my budget jacket with no eco cred.
"Hey," someone called me softly. I turned and see the class president, the one with big ears. She looked like a cute little creature with a kawaii vibe. "Thanks for choosing me for your team. I was always chosen last, if at all. Sometimes captains fought because they didn't want me in their team. You chose me almost right away."
"And we don't regret it one bit. We'll do the same next time..."
We... I said "we," without even thinking if there was a "we."
I noticed Bianca slipping out, carefully leaving my jacket on the bench.
Now or never... I grabbed my bag, the jacket and ran after her.
