The Ministry (Chapter 1)

Chapter 1

The Ministry

"Hi, I'm Percy Jackson and I want to become the king." I said to the administrator behind the desk in the big city hall.

"Full name, date of birth and age please." Said the lady in response in a monotone voice.

"Erh, yeah right. Well, Perseus Jackson, August 18th and 17."

"You were born the day the King died?" The lady asked, showing that she had some emotion.

"Yep." I answered. "Oh, my father was the man that fell off the St. Artolius that night." I wanted to add, but didn't. Things turned mostly awkward when I added that part.

"Okay, got it. And what do you want?"

I sighed, a little bit annoyed as I had already said it. "I want to become king. Could you tell me how?"

"Uhm, okay let me make a phone call. You can sit over there. I'll call you. You're number 81." And the lady handed me a paper which read number 81. Surprising.

"Okay, thanks." I mumbled and went over to the uncomfortable bench to wait on.

-------

"81" The same lady called after an hour. I stood up and walked over to her.

"Hi, it's me again." I tried for a joke and gave her a light grin but we were back to no emotions apparently.

"For the people that want to become king there is a letter. But since you're 17 your parents need to sign it. And then you need to go to the ministry and they will inform you of the rest." The lady explained almost closing the window again and shutting me out.

"Wait!" I yelped out desperate for her to listen to me, which earned people's attention for a few seconds.

"There is a problem... my parents can't sign it."

"Why?" She let out an impatient sigh.

"Uhm, my parents are dead." I mumbled out talking about my parents always made me uncomfortable.

"What? You need to speak up, son, I can't hear you." Son that word.

"They're dead!" I almost screamed, maybe a little too loud.

"Oh," the lady looked at me with pity, the part that I hated the most, but at least she was showing some emotion. "I'm sorry."

"Thanks. But what can I do? They can't sign it."

"Yes, I got that," She looked at her computer. "Perseus."

I cringed at my real name, I never used it. "I go by Percy actually."

"Okay, Percy. Your guardian needs to sign it then. Any more questions, because the line is getting longer." She was now getting annoyed.

Unfortunately for her, I wasn't done.

"Yes, actually. Where do I need to drop the letter of?"

"You can go to the palace and somebody will get you to the ministers."

"Okay, thanks again." I said, knowing everything that I wanted to know. I gave her a smile and a wave and she smiled back to my surprise. "Bye."

And with those kind words I left.

"How the hell am I going to convince Chiron to sign this?"

----------

"Hey, Percy, what a surprise!" Chiron exclaimed and gave me a hug.

"Yeah, I actually found something that I want to do." I started and Chiron looked happy. "It's good paying, but you need to sign something, because I'm 17 and all."

"That's no problem, give it to me." Then he read the paper and his face turned white. "Percy, I'm not going to sign this. It's crazy."

"No, it's not."

"Have you read what they say? It says that if you die the government is not responsible! And why do you want to become king?"

"I read it, yes. And thanks for the trust uncle, I can succeed. And the ministers ruin the land. I want to help people and as a king I can."

"You're crazy..." Chiron muttered. "Just as your father." I don't think that I was supposed to hear that.

"So that's a no?"

"Yes! Otherwise you'll die! I've seen them all try. All thinking that they could succeed. No one comes back, Percy."

"More have tried?" I was surprised no one talks about this. "Of course. And I am not going to lose you. Not like I lost everyone too early."

"Oh, uncle, please give me a chance. I will try my hardest. And you always say that the land needs a king. And I want to. Otherwise I'll have to wait a year."

"No. Percy, I'm sorry but I cannot let you do this." And I didn't want to argue again and causing a scene.

---------

"Come on, please." I protested as I walked behind my uncle while he was working.

A few days had passed and I hadn't really brought it up until now.

"Percy," And I already knew it from his tone.

"You can't stop me forever."

"Percy," He tried again but I interrupted him. "You are my only family and only one that I really have in this world and even you are working against me!"

"Percy," I wanted to interrupt him again, but he gave me the glare that he always gave me when I needed to shut my mouth. "I will sign it. If it's what you really want. And you know the risks. I don't want to drive a wedge between us."

I hugged my uncle, feeling guilty all of the sudden. "I'm sorry. And I know. But I'm still going."

He sighed deeply and then signed the paper. "Okay. You can go to the ministers directly. I'll walk with you." Since Chiron worked at the caste.

"Great."
