Chapter Nineteen
I had no idea what to wear for something like this. Was I supposed to wear a certain type of clothing? Did I have to wear a hijab or something? I groaned loudly and threw both of my clothing options onto the bed.
"Soph?" Someone knocked on my door.
I grumbled and got up, slowly walking to the door. I opened it and let the girl through. "Hey, Audre."
"What's wrong?" She furrowed her eyebrows and closed the door, looking around my room. For once, it was a mess.
I groaned once more, flopping back onto my bed, surrounded by clothes. "I don't know what to wear."
She giggled and picked up my favorite shirt, a white lace shirt with a silverish-grey tank-top sewn in underneath. She threw it at me and a pair of black skinny jeans. "Now go change. No one cares what you wear." She laughed and sat down. I rolled my eyes playfully and ducked into my closet, quickly changing in there.
"Should I do makeup?" I asked, not sure exactly what was going to happen once we reached the mosque.
"Ehm, if you want to." She shrugged. "Don't worry so much. They don't care what you wear or anything."
I nodded and grabbed my bag, not up for doing a whole bunch of makeup when I was tired. I pulled on my favorite black, velvet high tops and followed Audre downstairs. We got into her car and she started driving. I stared out the window for a bit, watching the trees go by. "So, what exactly is going to happen when we get there?"
"Well," she started explaining. "I'm gonna tell one of the ladies I want to take the shahada and wait for them to get the Maulana, which is like a priest. They're going to tell me what it means to be a Muslim, what things I must do." She paused. "Like wearing the hijab and praying."
"The hijab?" I asked, looking over to her. She wasn't wearing it at the time, but she did have a scarf loosely wrapped around her head as if it were cold. "Do you want to?"
"Of course, I'm just... I have to work up to it, I think. In sha Allah (if god wills it) I will gain the strength to wear the hijab." She explained slowly. "But, after that, he's going to have me repeat some stuff in Arabic after him. Basically, I'm going to say that I believe that Allah (S.A.W.) is the one and only god, Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) is his messenger, and Imam Ali (A.S.) is the Wali of god."
"Oh." I hummed. "Cool! I'm glad you feel better this way, Audre. I'll always support you in anything if it means your happy... And safe and healthy, of course." I smiled brightly and continued looking out the window. I twiddled my thumbs. "You don't think they'll try to convert me, do you?"
Audre started laughing softly. "Don't worry, they won't. They might think you came to take the shahada too though, so you might have to tell them you only came to support me."
"Okay." I noticed she pulled into a medium sized building. It looked like it only had one floor. It was a Friday and the sun had just started going down, so the sunset reflected off the cars and blinded me as we walked to the door.
As soon as we entered, there were two doorways. One on the left and one on the right. A sign on the wall in front of us said, "Women, left. Men, right."
Audre took off her shoes and gestured for me to do so as well. I pushed my shoes off and followed her to the left. She immediately tapped one of the women's shoulders and whispered to her. The woman smiled brightly, fixing her black hijab and nodded. She scurried out of the huge room, adorned with painting of things written in, what I assumed was, Arabic. The carpet had an odd type of decoration and there were people praying in the type of squares that were made. The squares were pointed diagonally towards something.
The woman came back and smiled. "Follow me. The moulana is waiting."
Audre and I walked into a smaller room with something like flags all around the room. A man wearing a long, black sheet over his clothes was waiting. He had his gaze lowered when we entered the room. "Asalam walaikum." His voice was cheery, as though he was very happy.
The women and some of her friends stayed near us, looking very giddy and happy. "Walaikum asalam." Everyone, but myself, replied.
Everything was so fascinating. The man was holding a book with "The Qu'ran" written on the front. "Have you both come to take the shahada?"
Audre spoke up. "Just me, but my friend came to support me."
"Ah." The man smiled. "You have a good friend." He commented before beginning to explain to Audre everything she had to do as a muslim. It wasn't too much. Things like praying five times a day, fasting in Ramadan, wearing the hijab, being kind, etc.
"I'm ready." She wasn't sure what to say, I could tell, but she was extremely excited.
"Alright, then. Repeat after me: La ilaha illa Allah; Muhammadur-Rasul Allah; Ali-yyun wali-yyu-llāh. Wasi-o-Rasool Allah wa Khalifato hu bila fasl."
Audre tripped over a couple words, but she did it. One woman from behind us, in her excitement, began hugging Audre. The others started saying things like,"Welcome to Islam, sister."
It was nice to see Audre so happy. Before we left, she said she had to pray "Maghrib and Isha." I assumed they were types of prayers and waited for her to finish.
A/N Hey everyone somehow still on here. This book is going on hiatus until I figure out if I still want to write it. Thanks!
