[4] Number One
Katsuki was becoming more irritated by the minute. Those two idiots kept glancing at each other, mirroring the same idiotic expression of worry and confusion, and even occasionally glancing at the explosive teen. They didn't say anything, they didn't have to, about the importance of their concern. Whatever it was, they saw it fit to fret about the entire class by glancing at random students in frequent intervals. What did those two fuckers have to be so worried about?
He backpedaled. Well he couldn't really judge at the moment, because he was thinking about someone else's safety. Katsuki couldn't help but scowl. Yeah, they were probably worried about Deku too, but then why hadn't they said anything yet? Normally, if the nerd missed even the smallest amount of class they'd began to panic. He would come in any weather, and even be carrying a giant tissue box and look like shit just to be present at school. The only time Deku missed class was when he was injured.
Gazing out of the corner of his eye, Katsuki saw round face and glasses staring at him. He purposely turned in their direction and they quickly focused on what was in front of them. A feral growl found its was up his throat. They had abso-fucking-lutely no reason to be looking at him like that. He could take care of himself, by himself.
Now their peeking at him was becoming obnoxious.
Katsuki strode over to their side by side desks, and slamed a hand down on each of them. "What the hell is up with the pathetic looks you shitheads keep giving people, me specifically?!"
Round face's eyes shot up to him, startled out of her thoughts. Her mouth wobbled as her brain nervously tried to form sentences. "O-oh, I didn't even notice." She waved her hand, but even Katsuki could see that it was shaking badly. In fact she looked scared. He glanced at Iida and glasses wouldn't even meet his eyes for a second. He just kept his gaze down on his perfectly still hands that were laced together.
Man, Katsuki knew that he was violent and rude among other things, but he didn't think he had done anything recently to warrant this terrified reaction.
Would flipping the desk ten feet count? Nah.
"Answer me damn it!" He snarled and re-slammed his hands on their desks, the pair visibly flinching.
"Um," round face pushed her index fingers together, voice wavering. "Iida and I, well, we've both come to the conclusion that, uh..." She stalled and Katsuki fixed her with a glare that practically forced her to continue. Under the pressure, she managed to squeak out," T-that both of us have f-forgotten something."
"Hah?" That was Katsuki's version of 'explain further'.
"We're not sure, but we know that something is missing from our memories." She became more confident with each word. "It's like, an itching on the back of our necks." That caught the blonde's attention. Itch? He'd had had something like that since lunch.
But like hell it was because he couldn't remember something.
He considered grilling them further, but fate chose for him, because seconds later, the bell rang and kids flooded out into the hallway to try and leave as fast as possible. One kid even ran by with his super speed and created a wind that flipped the skirts of all the girls he passed. They screamed and boys ogled for as long as possible. Katuski shoved his way through the leering boys and pushed himself towards the exit. That kind of stuff didn't interest him anyways.
His mind was so preoccupied with other thoughts that he'd rather not disclose, he didn't even register that he had bumped hard into someone until they said, "Try to watch where you're going next time."
Katsuki whirled around in fury. " Who the hell do you think you're talking to?" He grabbed the unamused boy's collar and hefted him closer to get up in his face. He would have pulled the boy off his feet, but considering the aggressor was slightly shorter than his victim, that wouldn't work out well. The boy had large bags under his tired purple eyes, and his wild purple hair looked like someone took a blow dryer to the front of it.
A wave of familiarity hit Katsuki, but he couldn't pinpoint where exactly. He dismissed the feeling though. It wasn't like it meant anything other than knowing who exactly it was that he would beat up later.
"Stay out of my way asshole, otherwise next time I'll be coming after you," Katsuki barked out and shook the sleep-deprived kid. "So--" The explosive teen tried to continue his verbal beat-down, but all of his muscles decided to betray him at once by releasing the kid and not raising his hand to explode the punk's face afterwards. His eyes became half lidded and his jaw refused to move. What had this loser done to him?
Katsuki wanted to scream and tear the other male limb by limb for placing him in such a predicament. The boy looked at him with a small smug expression, and boy oh boy did Katsuki was to smack it of his face while wearing a smirk of his own. His body quivered with strain when trying to control his own self, of course to no avail.
"You're going to walk out of the gates and across the street and stand there for five minutes before you are released." The boy spoke in an almost condescending tone, and it made Katsuki's skin crawl. His body began moving on its own, and he could do nothing against it. He hated this powerless feeling, the feeling of being able to do nothing and having to just sit and watch as the world moved around him. A face flashed into his head and sent his mind reeling. Is this what Deku always felt like?
Katsuki had never really considered exactly how Deku felt. Of course he wanted to push the nerd beneath him, possibly because subconsciously he was afraid that the useless Deku would catch up to him. Back then he needed to make sure that was impossible. Now, even though he bullied and mistreated Deku, somehow, Katsuki had been surpassed by him. He gained friends that would support him, started using his destructive quirk with a high recoil, and began mastering it. He even had some unspoken connection to All Might, and he refused to tell Katsuki why.
Deku no longer was chasing Katsuki's back. Instead, he charged ahead and forged his own path, leaving Katsuki behind.
The blonde boy could still remember the days when they were younger, when he would do something amazing, and turn behind him to see Deku's face glowing with admiration and mouth spilling praise. Katsuki would be lying if he said he didn't miss those days. Slowly, everything had begun to change when Deku's hero became All Might, and Katsuki was placed on the number two pedestal.
"Kacchan, that was amazing! You beat those bigger kids so easily! You're so strong!" Deku praised Katsuki as if he were a god, and he reveled in that feeling.
"Of course I was, Deku." Katsuki swiped a hand under his running nose so he didn't sniffle when he breathed, therefore looking even cooler in front of the sparkling boy. He grinned at Izuku's unyielding stream of compliments.
"You were just like All Might!" Katsuki's smile faltered, and fists clenched.
"Who is All Might?" Katsuki wanted to know just who had stolen Izuku's spotlight away from him. All of that nerd's attention was supposed to be on him and him alone. Come to think of it, Izuku had mentioned that name many times previously, but Katsuki couldn't have cared less before. Now he did, and he was fuming. Izuku clearly didn't notice the shift in Katsuki's demeanor, because he began bouncing on the balls of his feet in excitement.
"All Might is like, the number one hero! He's so awesome and strong!" Izuku's words took Katsuki by swarm. He... He wasn't the best hero to Izuku anymore? When had that changed?
A scowl formed on Katsuki's lips. "How can anyone be better than me?" He crossed his arms defiantly. There was no way someone was more awesome than him.
Izuku's cheerful demeanor was immediately dampened and he shrunk back into himself. "I didn't mean it like that, Kacchan. I'm just saying that All Might really amazing too. Not that he's better than you." He nervously looked away from the blonde, eyes flitting anywhere but the boy in front of him. He wrung his hands and only succeeded in amping up his own nerves.
Katsuki frowned at Izuku's actions. "I know I'm better, and don't you forget it, Deku!" He placed his hands on his hips at the declaration and smirked, but that quickly fell away when he realized he no longer held Izuku's attention. The other boy's attention was focused on something across the street from them. Katsuki followed Izuku's glittering gaze to a television store with brightly blinking neon signs, one of which read 'Open', and tvs crowding the front window.
Without warning, Izuku dashed across the four lane street. Katsuki's eyes widened and he yelled out, "Deku, get back here! I'm not done with you yet!" That idiot had just ran into the road without checking for cars. Katsuki's eyes darted to the left and right of his vision to see if any cars were coming. To his relief, there were none to be seen, and he let out a breath he hadn't known he'd been holding. He followed Izuku across the street to the flashing store. When Katsuki got there, Izuku was positively ecstatic. He was jumping up and down while pointing at one screen in particular.
"Look! There he is!" Izuku practically squealed he was so happy, and it made Katsuki's heart feel a twinge of sadness that he couldn't be the cause such a big smile. "That's All Might!"
Katsuki turned to the television his friend was pointing at. A bright blonde haired man with rippling and bulging muscles in a skintight red, blue, and yellow outfit was talking to the camera. Multiple reporters' microphones were positioned in front of him, and while speaking he wore a blinding full-teeth smile. Katsuki rose an eyebrow. Izuku had compared him to this buffoon?
"Listen!" Izuku shouted and Katsuki made a 'tch' noise, but begrudgingly listened anyways.
"All Might, seeing as you're the number one hero, your image brings people hope. How do make sure that hope is warranted?" The reporter asked. Katsuki didn't really understand what warranted meant, but with a short glance beside him towards Izuku's dazzling expression, he couldn't find it in himself to care.
"Their hope is always warranted when I'm around. I make a promise to myself each and every time I go out to on patrol, that I will save everyone I can. If it is within my power to save someone, anyone, even if it is only a single child, I will do it, because that is what it means to be a hero. The people have nothing to fear, for I am here!"
Katsuki's jaw dropped. "So?" Izuku questioned hesitantly. "What do you think of All Might?"
"Er," Katsuki turned his head away and scratched the side of his face, cheeks flushing in embarrassment. After many moments of silence, he finally said, "H-he's allowed to be as cool as me I guess."
Izuku beamed at him.
Katsuki shook his head, releasing him from his memory and brought himself back to the present. He scowled as he realized he'd been standing on the sidewalk opposite U.A. for five minutes because of eye-bags' quirk, whatever it was. Metaphorical steam poured from Katsuki's ears. He stormed down the sidewalk, shoving people away who were in his path, and yelling, "Move, extras!" He was so done.
