Day 5 Pt1
'I'm sure we're all agreed that we can't be trusted on other people's property.' Grian began the next morning, laying a map across the breakfast table. 'So I've decided we should go on a walk through some local fields to the town a few miles away.'
'That sounds a lot safer than...' Martyn paused, remembering the chaos of the castle. 'Previously.' Several nods of agreement.
'The only problem is rain, but we all brought waterproofs, so it's ok. And we'll get lunch in the town.... We should leave at 10 latest.'
'10 latest' very quickly became 'maybe 10:15 if Scar hurries up'. But he didn't take too long, and the group set off in surprising time, Grian with the map in front. Scar had decided to take Cub's kingship incredibly seriously, ordering everyone to do whatever his friend said. Ren was jokingly annoyed, refusing all Cub's commands until he was commanded to 'breathe' and had to give up.
Grian had explained that a lot of the walk was through fields, but halfway through their third one it started to set in just how much. But Martyn was quick to suggest a word association game to pass the time, starting strong with 'green'.
'Nature,' Scar followed quickly with.
'Tree.'
'Scar.'
'Arson,' Grian immediately replied before anyone else could. The group started laughing, particularly those who'd seen him in the Life Series, and the game continued with 'Life Series'. It wasn't long until they were on field 4, when the next problem set in.
The foreseen rain.
It was light, but all the group donned raincoats. Except Scar, who wasn't too bothered until it got worse.
'Scar, put on your raincoat!' Grian demanded as field turned quickly to bog.
'I forgot it!'
'I told everyone it was going to rain at breakfast!'
'I forgot to bring it on holiday!'
'You brought ALL THAT STUFF and you forgot a RAINCOAT?!'
By that point the sodden group reached a forest with some shelter. Scar was already soaked through, hiding a shiver.
'Here.' Cub, temporarily sacrificing his dryness by removing his raincoat, lay his labcoat over Scar's shoulder. 'Best I've got.'
'Th-thank you, noble King Cub.' Scar quickly donned it, pulling it tightly on, hands in pockets. The pair ran to catch up with the others, who were parkouring over fallen tree branches across particularly muddy patch. Tango was just helping Jimmy across, as Joel squelched through unbothered on a dare from Martyn. Etho was making some mad route along the edge that somehow worked... Cub waited for Skizz and Bdubs to carefully finish crossing before bounding perfectly across in just a few seconds. Scar tried to follow suit, slipping halfway and falling backwards into the quagmire.
'Scar! My labcoat!' Cub protested, though still ready to assist if needed...
'It'll clean up in the rain, don't worry.' Grian replied, watching Scar claw his way through the mud, barely standing to walk the rest of the way through. By this point, he looked like a swamp monster, but no one mentioned it, continuing along. They soon reached the edge of the forest, pausing for a break.
'My leg's hurt...' Grumbled Joel. 'How many miles left?'
'I don't know!' We should be... SCAR WHAT ARE YOU DOING?'
Scar, who'd been trying to take the map out of its waterproof bag in to see it properly, dropped both.
Into a puddle.
'SCAR THAT'S OUR ONLY MAP!'
'I- I didn't realise!' He tried to pick up the sodden, muddy lifeline, tearing it instead. Panicked, he shoved it all into Doc - the closest hermit's - hands and sprinted away.
'SCAR! COME BACK!' Cub broke into a run after. Doc had failed to help the map, giving it to Ren.
'Why is it always Scar?' Tango sighed. 'Every time something happens...'
'I know, right?'
'Or it's Jimmy.' Joel pointed out.
'Or you, Tango.'
'Or Cub.'
'FELLAS, fellas, we're all chaotic... just... I think it's this... way?' Grian pointed forwards. Cub and Scar still hadn't returned. Bdubs had been eaten by the coat Doc lent him, but didn't appear to care, even as he couldn't see where the rest of the group were going. They continued through the field, pausing at the edge to wait for Cub and Scar.
'Sky.' Impulse mumbled, replying to Joel's 'ocean' in the word association game from 5 minutes ago.
'Rainbow.' Followed Skizz.
'Scott.'
'MCC.'
'Coins.'
'LOOT N' SCOOT!' Etho yelled excitedly.
'It's 1 WORD Etho!'
Etho's face fell. He didn't speak for a moment.
'Lootnscoot.' He said quicker. 'It's 1 word.'
Tango sighed.
'Cards.'
'Birthday.'
'NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR STUPID CABBAGES ANYWAY!'
'Oh notch, what have they done this time?' Muttered Grian as their peaceful game was interrupted by Scar sprinting into view, followed by Cub.
'Come on! Hurry! This place is his property. And he's got a GUN!'
'GET OFF MY LAND!' Yelled the farmer.
'I tried to steal his gun but Cub didn't let me!'
'RUN! WE NEED ARMOUR AGAINST THAT FARMER!' Joe screamed, vaulting over the fence and splatting facefirst in mud. Gunshot. Cub ducked to avoid it. Scar skidded in front of him.
'DON'T SHOOT KING CUB!'
'SCAR MAN, JUST RUN!' Cub dragged his friend away from the insane farmer,
'COME ON! OVER THE FENCE. GO GO GO.' Grian screeched, letting everyone else over first before climbing the fence himself.
'Grian! Come on! Don't get shot by the meanie farmer!'
'PATIENCE SCA-AAAAAH!' The fence that had stood bravely against the weight of the 7 foot half-metal Doc gave way. With a scream Grian fell forwards. Scar caught him before he got as mudded as Joe did.
'What way now dudes?'
'I don't know... someone dropped our only map INTO A PUDDLE!'
'Well, we can't go backwards, so I guess the only way is... forwards?' Impulse set off first. Joel gave a very obvious groan, stomping after. They were back in forested areas, clumping deeper and deeper into the undergrowth until they were knee-deep in stinging nettles and brambles, wishing for more leg protection.
'It's- everything's ok... OW!' Grian winced as stinging nettles found their way through his torn trousers. 'Ow! ow- ow- ow...' All he could do was break into a sprint, diving for freedom. Blood covered badly stung and scratched legs. Scar ran to reach him.
'A- are you ok, Grian?' A nod back as Grian tried to stand, wincing. 'I'll- I can carry you if your legs are bad...'
'No... no that's... my legs are fine. I just... feel like we went the wrong way...'
'Yeah... WATER you know...' Martyn grimaced as he stared at their route forwards.
A river.
I changed the order of so much in this chapter...
Also the forgetting-raincoat-on-holiday thing actually happened to me.
