Chapter Two

Kennedy

"Hey, are you actually going to come down for dinner!" I scream upstairs, "dad's forcing me to starve until you get up and join us!"

"And I'm hungry!" I add, sighing with the laugh I gain in response.

"I mean, so am I, but knowing it's making you suffer is tempting me to stay up here all night," Blake responds sharply, I can hear his footsteps against the floor upstairs.

"That's fine by me," I smile as I make my way to the dining room, sitting beside my dad who flashes me a bright smile, "is he coming?" He asks as I grab his hand for grace, a large smile crawling across my face.

"No, he's not feeling very well and is offering me his plate." I state as I slowly drag his plate over towards mine with my right hand as I eat with my left.

But as it enters food stealing distance, my wrist is grabbed and lifted up where Blake smiles down at me, his blonde hair damp from his shower.

"Do you mind fatty?" He asks sarcastically as I eat in silence, enjoying our typical family dinners. Blake looks nervous as he watches me, and then looks over to our father.

"You know," he begins, devouring a fork-full of dinner. "Connors having a party this weekend at his house..." he remains quiet again, and I almost laugh as he tries to squeeze himself around dad's rules.

   It never worked.

"And?" My father asks, genuinely interested in the conversation.

"It's only a few friends," lie, "there will be parents in the house," another lie, "and a controlled supply of alcohol," he finishes, allowing dad to make up his mind. But he won't need to, dad's mind  gave us two choices, no and no.

"Kennedy, please repeat the rules of the house to your brother," he sits back as I turn to Blake a large smile coming over my face.

"Well, my dear, dear twin brother," I flash my teeth. "The first and the most prominent rule of them all is no relationships," I pretend to act shocked and place a hand over my mouth.

Blake rolls his eyes at me.

"As well as the no relationships, we are banned from large parties and situations that may cause inappropriate reactions and actions from the opposite sex."

I then pretend to cough, and mutter Lilly's name as I do so, Blake glares at me and it only makes my smile wider.

"And thirdly no sex, drugs and bla, bla, bla."

Blake then stands up, and begins to shake his head. "It's not fair dad and you know it."

Our dad looks sympathetic for a second and then smiles, "it's for your own good, for the both of you, and all rules are gone once you leave for college...and I...I won't be there to guide you." He looks prepared to burst into tears and I glare at Blake, indicating that it's his turn to comfort dad about us leaving.

"Listen dad I didn't mean it," he forces himself to say as he goes to his side, "but we've had these rules for years and don't you think we're both old enough to know not to make basic mistakes?"

"How are we ever to become adults if we don't have the experience of learning from them?"

And then, dad says something that I thought would never come out of his mouth.

"Yes, and...and you're right, it may be time to change the rules."

"Your kidding right?" I add, forgetting to contribute to the conversation as I'd been devouring Blake's plate of food while he was distracted.

"Blake...you date whoever you wish," He sighs, and I drop my fork onto Blake's empty plate. "Did...did you ju-"

"That's not the current problem Blake!" I shout at him, turning to my dad. "How could you! That rule was the only thing keeping Lil-" I stop.

"That...was the only thing keeping my dear brother here a virgin," I look at him awkwardly and then to my dad with a pleading glance.

"That's a very good point Kennedy, we don't want you being an aunt at 18," He narrows his fuzzy eyebrows. "So I've made up my mind," a large smile comes across his face.

"Blake you will be allowed to date..."my father announces and I stand up from the table. Just as I'm ready for a fight my father silences me with his hand.

"....Once Kennedy does," he sits back, very proud of himself. I breathe a sigh of release and sit back down.

"But who in the world would date her," he exclaims, shaking his head. "She'll never date anyone!" Blake shouts in a fury, "she's a rodent!"

"Then neither will you," I smile, knowing I have all the power.

"Oh I like the sound of that," my father smiles, stacking our plates and standing up to take them through to the kitchen.

"B-But what about the party! Dad!" He shouts as he heads into the kitchen, "please Ken, stop being such a brat and actually leave the house for once."

"It's only Connor for goodness sakes, you know him, we all grew up together!" He shouts as he runs his hands through his messy, damp blonde hair.

I sigh and shake my head, "I'll think about it okay?"

"Good, and don't embarrass me while you're there because I've got a status to hold up." He smiles as he heads back out to his room.

"I've got a status to hold up" I mimic, rolling my eyes and clearing the remainder of the table through to the kitchen.

"Why change the rule now? We've only got a few months until we graduate and we're free to date whoever we want?" I ask, taking a plate from him to wash.

"Because sometimes a little change can spice things up," He nudges me, "and I trust you completely, I know you have respected the rule since it was in place and I know you're not interested In a relationship while in high school."

"Yeah...I guess."

"Besides, isn't the Lily he likes really nice, you used to be friends with her didn't you?" He turns to me and I continue to wash the plates in silence.

"She's a snake, tough exterior and fascinating to look at but at the end of the day her poison can be removed and she's easy to kill," I smile, "there's still a heart inside her that beats, just not as passionately as it used too."

My dad stares at me, a smile on his face, and places his hand over mine.

"Did you come up with that yourself?" He smiles, beginning to dry the dishes with a dish towel. I smile as confirmation, and he gives me a small pat on the back.

"Just keep your head down sweetheart, the less trouble you deal with the easier things will be."

Giving me a light forehead kiss, I express my disgust as I walk towards my room, a smile on my face as I wipe his saliva off my face.

Running up the stairs quickly, I walk by Blake's room, his Coldplay album being blasted through his speakers. I walk by his room, opening my bedroom door while chucking myself into my bed.

Smiling, I roll over and put my arms under my bed to grab my lyrics book. The fear of a monster grabbing my arms and dragging me into another dimension still haunts me. But Luckily for me, the monster has decided today is not the day.

I sit on my bed, reflecting on the day I had as I shove my feelings down in free-verse, and in less than fifteen minutes I have three verses, a chorus and a link written down.

Rising from my bed, I sit at the small keyboard my mom bought Blake and I for our eleventh birthday. The fact that I saved it from the trash unknown by my father.

Gently, I press three block chords. Small, silent tears streaming down my face as I hit the notes. I enjoy the small amount of time I have to mess around with my music.

And break because my dream will never become a reality.

I literally keep falling in love with every character I put in this book, I'm really looking forward to giving them a lot more depth and characterisation.
