Chapter 20

Since we were all freshman, nobody had their permit or license. So, we had to walk. The restaurant wasn't too far because Prestwall was a pretty small town, but it felt like miles on foot. Miles of walking in the cool spring air past shady trees and endless plains. Finally, I spotted the town hall in the distance.

"Oh thank goodness!" I cried in relief. "We're almost there!" I was extremely aware of my throbbing feet and my backpack that felt like it was filled with boulders. I readjusted the shoulder straps and straightened my back a bit to loosen the load, but my back still ached like crazy.

Finally, the restaurant came into sight. Besides the large flatscreen TV on one wall, it looked like it could come straight out of the 1960s. I sighed. It was the perfect set.

I walked up to the lady by the counter and pointed to my friends by the door. "Hi, we called just a few minutes ago from Prestwall High School," I informed. "We were to film something here?"

She gestured to the mostly empty restaurant. "Film away. Would you like anything to eat?"

Zach walked up to the counter. "Yes one large cheese pizza and three fountain drinks," he requested pulling out his wallet. I pulled him aside.

"Hey, you know you don't have to pay for everything," I told him.

He laughed. "The drinks are for me, Adam, and Ben. They're paying. As for the pizza, don't worry about it."

Clary and Jessica walked up to us. "Nah, we'll pay you tomorrow," Clary said. Jessica and I nodded in agreement.

I walked back up to the counter and carried the large pizza to the table, ordering a Sprite for myself. Then, I pulled out my camera and gestured to the counter.

"Okay we have to start filming," I ordered. "We can use the counter as the Greensboro bar..."

"Aw, but I'm so hungry!" Matt complained. I shot him a look.

"You guys are eating in the shot," I reprimanded. "Now, who's playing the waiter?"

    Cam raised his hand.

I nodded. "Okay. And the rest of you are the Greensboro Four?"

The other four boys nodded. I took my phone out of my backpack as the boys took their places. The "Greensboro Four" took seats by the counter while Cam pulled on a white dress shirt and stood behind it.

"Lights, Camera, Action!"

The ball went rolling as the Greensboro four ordered food, but were curtly denied by Cam, the waiter. After them waiting, and being denied again, a few times, I stopped shooting.

Though I wasn't playing the part of the director, I sure felt like it in that moment. I signaled Clary to get into the scene and we began "Day 2" on the script.

Clary was playing the part of a racist white woman at the time. When she walked up to Ben and yelled at him, her face contorted in false anger and her voice jumped an octave. She pointed at him and gestured so strongly, I felt like I was being transported back into the 1960s.

Jessica yelled "Cut!" for me after the scene finished, and we re-watched the footage. With the wooden chairs and the dirty counter, paired with the dress shirts and real pizza, it looked extremely realistic. There was even a fake boom box in the corner.

"Nice!" I commented, and everyone seemed to agree. We decided to take a break and finish off the pizza.

The pizza was good, not too greasy or too dry, with a crust covered in tiny herbs. Paired with my Sprite, it was a good meal anywhere.

Soon, we went back to filming. We stepped outside for a bit, looking for a good place to film the fake interviews. I suggested the parking lot, but was shot down because it seemed to modern. After a bit of contemplation, Aiden pointed to a Meadow across the street.

"How about there?" he suggested. "The sun's at a good angle and the grass extends for a while. Plus, the trees kind of frame the whole thing." He held his fingers to his face in a rectangle, trying to visualize the scene.

Clary grinned. "Wow, Aiden, do you take Photography or something?"

"No," he laughed. "But it seems like a pretty good place."

It was. I flipped through the script and decided it was the perfect place to film the final interview. We filmed it in the hot sun, and followed it by a few more single interviews by the brick walls of the complex. Soon, day one of filming was finished.

Day two wasn't as chaotic. We filmed the reactions of average citizens, played by me and Matt, and people who were against the sit ins, played by Jessica and Cam. By the end of the day, we had everything but the final chase, the real interview, and the ending scene with all of us in it done.

By day three, we didn't even bother to go to the restaurant. The back of the school with the arbory and bleachers was perfect for our remaining scenes.

I flipped through the script. "Okay everyone!" I clapped my hands. "Let's finish this thing today!"

Clary nodded. "How about we start off with the chasing scene?"

We began filming the scene. I, as the cop, was to jump over the fence and chase Zach and Aiden until they were caught. I handed Clary my phone and stood poised behind the fence surrounding the arbory. She signaled to me to begin.

I took a few steps back for a running start and leaped over the fence. Except, not exactly. The fence was far too high and my knee caught on it, tearing through my bare skin, unshielded due to my yellow dress. We had to dress fancy today for the final scene, but that was my downfall. Literally.

I tumbled over the fence and rolled onto the dirt ground. I lay there for a few moments, the pain coursing through my leg when everyone ran over to me.

"Are you okay?" Clary asked. I looked up to her, relieved to find that my phone was safely in her hands.

"I don't know," I answered, pulling up the dirt-covered hem of my dress. The skin by my knee was scratched badly, even a bit of it peeling off, but there was no blood. Clary and Jessica helped me to my feet and I hobbled into the school building. I walked to the bathroom as inconspicuously as possible and washed off all the dirt and scratches from my leg with a wet paper towel. A few droplets of blood fell from some of the scabs, but I staunched the flow with the towel until it stopped.

I slowly walked out of the bathroom, and the pain began to recede. After a few minutes, I could even run. I walked back to the arbory where everyone was waiting.

"Do you still think you can film the scene?" Matt asked.

I nodded. "Yeah I'm fine. No blood, and I can run." That last part about no blood was a lie, but the blood had stopped now. "Let's get back to work."

We took our positions, except I stood in front of the fence this time. With little effort, we finished filming the scene. Now, all we had left to worry about was the ending scene and the real interview.

"Who are we going to interview?" asked Cam. "Did you guys find that mayor guy?"

Jessica shook her head. "We couldn't contact him. Who else do we have?"

We racked our brains but couldn't think of anyone. Finally, an idea popped into my head.

"Hey guys! You remember Mrs. Wattenberg?" They nodded. "Well, she talked to me for a bit while we were researching, so can't we just use her as the real interview?"

"Well that's a good idea," Ben agreed. "But do you remember what she said?"

I bit my lip. "Something about thinking the facilities were separate but equal until she met an actual African-American girl and not knowing that prejudice was wrong because it was the norm."

Clary nodded. "That sounds pretty good. Besides, Mr. Marvin said that we can reenact the interview. So, who wants to be Mrs. Wattenberg?"

All eyes fell on Clary. With her short blond hair and blue-gray eyes, she could be Mrs. Wattenberg's granddaughter.

"Oh fine!" Clary agreed. "Who wants to report?"

I volunteered to report and took my phone to record. Clary sat on one of the bleachers and I began interviewing her. After three or four questions, we were finished.

Clary jumped off of the bleachers. "Aw that was so bad!" she complained. "I mean, what am I? An old woman or a robot?"

I laughed. "Oh it wasn't bad at all. Trust me."

Zach walked up to us. "Okay, now all we have left is the ending scene."

"Yeah, but we're all in that scene," Aiden pointed out. "So, who's going to record?"

Cam pointed to the fence between us and the tennis courts. "We can try to stick the phone between the wires."

I clasped my phone protectively. "Nuh uh. There is no way I'm keeping my phone between some fence wires, twenty feet above the ground."

Ben pointed to the ditch behind the fence. "Aw, it's only 10 feet."

I raised my eyebrows. "And that makes it better?"

After a bit of arguing, the boys finally conceded not to put the phone in the fence. As we were contemplating what else we could do, Brett walked through the arbory.

All eight of us rushed toward him and bombarded him with questions. Clearly overwhelmed, he took a step back.

"Okay, what I'm getting from this is that you want me to record the last scene of your movie, right?" he asked.

Jessica nodded. "It's only a few lines. Can you?"

Brett grinned. "Yeah sure. So, what am I recording with?"

I handed him the phone and we all gathered at the bleachers, four of us sitting at the top and four at the bottom in order of lines. We quickly spoke all our lines and yelled a "Thanks for Watching!"

Brett cut the tape. "Nice," he complimented. I leaned over and looked at the footage. It was perfect resolution and not the slightest bit shaky.

"Thanks!" I thanked him as he handed me the phone. "If you want, we can help out anytime with your movie."

"Well actually," Brett began. "Jeanine and I have to film the Little Rock Nine next Wednesday and we need background protesters. It would be great if you guys could help."

We agreed to help as Brett walked away. I began filming again.

"Aaaaand this is behind the scenes!" I said in my best announcer voice. I walked over to Jessica. "What did you think about filming?"

Jessica gave me an amused smile. "It was fun."

"That sounds awesomeeeee!" I announced, running over to Clary. "And what about you?"

"It was pretty awesome," she agreed. "My favorite part was yelling at Ben in the restaurant."

I laughed. "That was definitely entertaining to watch," I turned the camera to the boys. "And what did you guys think?"

"Well, it was definitely educational," Aiden commented. "But also lots of fun. Besides..."

Zach and Ben grabbed his arms and yelled, "Look a Tulip Poplar!" They ran to the tree and I laughed. I turned the camera to Matt.

"How did you like filming?" I asked.

He grinned. "It was awesome. Anasika is a really good director."

I smiled at the compliment. "Thanks." I handed the camera over to Clary. "Okay now film me!" I instructed.

She laughed and took the camera. "Okay, Anasika, what do you have to say?"

I spun around in the grassy plain. "It was so much funnn!! And I would totally do it again!" With that, I ran to the camera and placed my hand over it, finally ending the behind the scenes, and allowing our filming to come to a close.
