I walked into the living room and looked over towards the kitchen to see Ponyboy sitting on the counter with a glass of water held out towards me. I took it from him, “Thanks.” I took a sip and it relieved my throat from the screaming. “I thought you had left.” I said and he shook his head. “I figured that you would want something to drink so I invited myself in and got you a glass of water.” He said and I smiled. “How sweet.” I said and he blushed and looked down. I bent to see his face better and decided to tease him. “Is that a blush I see?” I said squinting my eyes to see better. “N-no.” He stuttered. “Don’t worry; I’m just messing with you.” I said and he smiled at me. I liked his smile it was warm and comforting. I sat next to him on the counter. “Tell me about yourself, Ponyboy.” I said drinking more water. “Well I am sixteen years old,-“ He began and I nearly choked on my water. “You’re sixteen, I thought you were eighteen.” I said and he nodded. “Yea I get that a lot. I have a friend that’s sixteen but looks fourteen, his name is Johnny.” Then he continued, “I live with my two brothers, Sodapop and Darrel, who we call Darry.” “What happened to your parents?” I asked softly. “They died in an auto wreck almost two years ago.” He responded sadly. “I’m sorry for your loss. I shouldn’t have brought it up.” I said feeling guilty. “No it’s okay, as you have probably already guessed I am a greaser but I am not “normal” as the others call it. I don’t get into trouble and I like to read and draw and watch movies, stuff like that. I don’t drink either but I smoke a lot, Darry wants me to quit but I find it hard. I do good in school and don’t have many friends, I just mostly lone it or hang out with the gang. When I am alone I watch the sunset, read or just think to clear my head. I run track which is another reason I should quit smoking. That’s pretty much it, you’re turn.” He said and looked at me. “I am fifteen almost sixteen, I am from Kansas, and my parents aren’t here either, I’m not sure where they are actually. But anyways, I did good in school but I got kicked out for fighting. I was in the hospital for only a few hours and the girl I fought, who happens to be my best friend, Summer she was in there for two days. I’m a greaser too but my parents spoil me anyways which I don’t really like. They are just trying to bribe me to like them but it isn’t working. I have read all the books I own at least three times each and I wouldn’t call myself an artist but I can draw decently. I only have one friend which is Summer, well and you but I just met you. Listening to music helps me clear my head if I am upset about something. That is important because I get mad very easily so just warning you.” I said and pointed at him. I crossed my legs and continued, “How come your hair is blond it seems that your hair was a different color before?” I asked. “It’s a long story, but I guess it’s story time. Last year at the movies Dallas, another one of my friends, was being rude to these two Soc girls. Johnny and I got him to leave and we sat with the girls. Later we were walking with Two-Bit and the Soc girls, when their boyfriends pulled up and brought them home. Johnny and I feel asleep in the lot and when I went home I got into a fight with my brothers and Darry slapped me. I ran out and got Johnny. We went to the park and then the Socs pulled up and it was the same guys from earlier. They tried to drown me and were going to beat up Johnny like they had before. Johnny killed the guy that was drowning me and we had to run. We were at a church in Windrexville and we had to change our hair so we didn’t match our descriptions in the paper. Mine was cut and died, and Johnny’s was just cut and he washed the grease out. He wouldn’t look too good with blond hair. Dallas soon came to get us and brought us to DQ for food. When we went back to the church it was on fire. Me and Johnny raced in to save some kids that we heard screaming. I had to be pulled out by Dallas when I passed out and I later found out that Dallas pulled out Johnny right before he was crushed by a falling piece of burning timber. If it weren’t for Dallas we would both be dead. At the hospital the doctors thought Johnny’s back was broken but it was just out of place. There was a rumble, greasers verses Socs, the greasers won but it didn’t do much. We still get jumped and treated like dirt. At court it was decided that killing Bob was self-defense and Johnny wasn’t charged and I got to stay with Darry. Now the gang is tighter than ever.” He said and I was amazed. “Wow, that’s just amazing. I can’t believe you had to go through something like that.” I looked at him. He nodded, “Yea I am still getting over it myself.” “I think that would be the only thing I would ever be afraid of. Losing someone I care about.” I said and Ponyboy looked at me confused. “I am not afraid of anything.” I said and he nodded. “Tell me about the gang. Since I will probably be spending some time with them.” I said and he just smiled, like he was in his own little world.
