Chapter 1: 15 Years Later

I was sleeping in the car. A 12-hour drive to Death City. My mom was driving me back to the birthplace I'd never personally known. After all, Mom moved us across the world when I was 3 years old, in hopes of keeping me safe. Far away from the dangers lurking in Death City. However, she did promise me that when I turned 18 she would enrol me in the DWMA. I know what you're thinking. Most students enrolled at the DWMA are under 18, and yes, I know that. Regardless, attending had always been a dream of mine but it wasn't possible under my mother's influence. Now, since I was 18, I was officially an adult. I was finally my own person capable of making my own adult decisions. Mom still felt that I was too young to be a Meister but I felt the opposite. I was thrilled to finally be on the path toward success that I'd always dreamt of, regardless of my age.

"We're almost there", Mom said, startling me out of my partial sleep-haze. I opened my eyes and grumbled in response. Mom continued, telling me "5 minutes. It's a few streets away." My eyes immediately opened fully, my body perking up and filling with excitement. "Really?!", I exclaimed. Mom disregarded this. I don't think she wanted to fuel my excitement too much, in case there was any chance I'd hesitate and change my mind. I was overjoyed with excitement. I was already imagining it all: getting to go to the DWMA and to work with a weapon. So insanely exciting, there's no other way to describe it.

Mom turned the next corner and there it was. With the smiling sun glaring through the windshield of the car, it was hard to make out the details of my surroundings. "I thought you said 5 minutes?!", I yelled. "Whoops did I?", Mom responded. What a pleasant surprise. I couldn't believe my eyes. I was finally there, at the DWMA.

Mom parked on the side of the road and I immediately jumped out to get a better look. It was the weekend, so there weren't any classes going on. This was convenient because it made things less hectic. More people were around to guide us. I was incredibly eager to explore. My mom helped me unload my several over-packed suitcases from the trunk and we brought them up to the front doors of the academy. She went up to a window, exhaled on it and dialled Lord Death's number: 42-42-564.

The reflection rang, as a dialled telephone would, and then he answered.

"Oh, hello M/N great to see you again!", Death exclaimed.

"Yeah nice to see you too", Mom started. "I've brought my daughter to the front steps of the academy. Could you send someone down to help us move her into her room?".

"Ah yes, of course. Why don't I send down, uh... Maka Albarn. I believe her room's a door or two down from yours, Y/N", Death replied. We agreed to this and our call with Death ended. It was weird meeting Lord Death, a grim reaper. He was a lot friendlier than I'd expected. My mom simply thought he was weird. I thought she was rude.

Only moments later, a girl came running through the academy's front doors. She had blonde hair tied into two ponytails and was wearing what looked to be a uniform."Hi, I'm Maka. Are you Y/N?", she said, introducing herself politely. "Yes", I replied. Maka told me she'd help Mom and I with my luggage and that she'd show us to my room. She was kind and helpful, and I was appreciative.

Both my Mom and I shook Maka's hand. We then grabbed my luggage and followed closely behind her. The halls were packed with people. Maybe coming on the weekend wasn't the greatest idea, after all. We walked by a funny-looking white-haired boy with sharp teeth. He and Maka seemed to know each other. "Hey Maka, who's the hot new girl? She looks pretty cool", he probed, making me feel slightly uncomfortable. "Oh shut up Soul, like you're one to talk about being cool", Maka snarled back, in return. Their interaction was weird and I hoped that not all of the guys there were like him. Cockiness isn't flattering, in my opinion.

We walked down several winding halls and eventually stopped in front of a door. "Here we are. Room 118. If you need anything I'm in 112, down there", Maka told me. I thanked her. She asked if I needed help with anything else and I told her I didn't. Being honest, I most definitely needed a lot of help, then, but I didn't really want to be around people. I just wanted to say goodbye to my mom and unpack. Maka smiled and ran down the hall, eventually approaching then entering her room. What a cheery girl.

I opened the door to my room and walked inside with my mom. The configuration of the room was set up for two people but I was certain that I wouldn't be having a roommate. "Looks like I'll be having an extra bed", I stated. The room had two single beds, some shelves and a kitchenette. It was cosy which I liked. I dropped my bags on the ground and gave my mom a hug. "Need me to help you unpack?", Mom asked. I told her I was fine. I figured that if she stayed I'd end up starting to miss her too soon and I didn't want that. She let go of me and looked at me in a strange way. She started tearing up, making me feel emotional. She went through the whole "you're getting so big now" mom-thing. As much as it was heartwarming, it was really annoying. I pretty much had to push her out the door. I waved goodbye as she walked down the hall. "I love you, Mom", I exclaimed. "Love you too", she responded.
