Chapter 19

Author's note: OH MY GOODNESS!!! HOUSEKEEPING HIT 4K EYEBALLS ALREADY!!! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH , EVEN SILENT READERS. EVERYONE, JUST KEEP DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING BECAUSE IT IS AMAZING!!!! Also, I have two new books out that you can find by going to my account. One is an advice book, the other a random thoughts/rants kind of book.. You'll get the idea when you get there! BUT THANK YOU FOR ALL THE SUPPORT AND STUFF!!!!! I LOVE EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU!

"Please mind the gap." The generic but somehow muffled recording dulls my ears. I hate the underground; it's too hot, too busy and you never get any space. It's a claustrophobic nightmare! But I have to rough through the hoards of angry businessmen in their perfectly ironed monkey suits on a regular basis because I live so far from the hotel. It's just quicker and easier than walking or worse, getting a taxi. I'd happily LIVE down here if I'd never have to go through the horror that is hailing down a taxi on a busy road. The thought sends shivers down my spine.

I feel Helena's hand wrap around my wrist, disrupting me from my mental image of all businessmen wearing monkey costumes to work. It'd be pretty cool, don't you think? Just imagine the response of people as a mob of chimps and gorillas, wearing ties and carrying briefcases of course, walk into the office! Those reactions would be absolutely priceless! You know, I sometimes worry about my mental health... this is the kind of progression my brain goes through a lot.

"This is the Rochdale line to Victoria, calling at Littleborough, Smithy Bridge...." The droning voice continues and I quickly board the tube with Helena, desperate for the voice to stop. We sit down on the almost empty carriage side by side, my feet tucked neatly under me. The tube eventually pulls away from the station, speeding through mile after mile of tunnel. The rhythmic sounds of the wheels against the tracks soon has me leant against the window, fast asleep.

"Excuse me, ma'am?" I wake up with a sharp twist. I look next to me for Helena, only to find a random woman holding countless shopping bags, shaking my shoulder. I hear a cough from in front of me so I turn to see Helena standing up, holding onto the bar running along the ceiling. The tube is full, with the disgusting odour of sweat lingering around. Every seat in sight is full of people of different colours, shapes and sizes. Helena explains that she gave up her seat to the bag-woman who was struggling to stand whilst I was asleep. I nod along, still dazed with sleep. Today was pretty eventful, to say the least, you know with being kicked down by my boss, the bathroom flooding, meeting Tom, fainting, witnessing Charlotte having a mental breakdown of sorts and then finding her running from Tom's hotel room. Pretty hectic if you ask me.

"We will shortly be arriving at Moston." Ugh, not that THING again. At least I'll be getting off soon, I'll be well away from that robot. It must have been really busy at the other stops because mine is only four stations from the start of the line where the hotel is. Eventually, the tube pulls up to the platform and we push through the crowd of commuters to the doors. Helena jumps off with a loud crash, not caring that everyone is looking at her. She beams wide and holds her hand out for me. Typical Helena. I accept her hand like a fancy Victorian lady stepping from her carriage and try to elegantly drift out of the tube. But being the clutz that I am, I fall off the train, collapsing onto the floor with an even bigger crash. My entire bag empties across the floor, makeup spinning off in different directions. With my cheeks burning red, I scramble after my belongings and sweep them all in my bag.

"Miss?" I feel a hand rest on my shoulder. "You dropped this..." I turn and see a very familiar person. "Tom?" Is it really Tom standing in front of me? I watch as his eyes burn with a childlike passion and the corners of his face curl into a smile. Yes, this is definitely Tom. I take his outstretched hand and he heaves me off the floor. "And who may this be?" Helena gives Tom a long hard glare, making him shrink into his coat hood nervous. "Helena, this is Tom." He offers her a very shaky hand. A huge laugh erupts from the woman and she pulls him into a hug. I notice that Tom's body tenses and he doesn't return the embrace, a frightened look plastering his face. I giggle at the stricken expression and Tom smiles. I blush a brighter red whilst Helena lets go of the poor guy. He straighten his jacket and gives me my purse that I must have dropped.

"Why are you here?" I question. If he lives here, then why is he staying at a hotel literally down the road? He mumbles something about that his house is being refurbished and he's staying out whilst the construction is going on. He explains that he's going back so he can do his work from his office because the hotel doesn't have room for his equipment. What job could possibly have so much equipment that he can't take it all to a hotel? "Anyway, best be off now!" He heads up the stairs to the streets above, leaving me once again confused in his wake.

As soon as he's out of sight, Helena starts lightly poking my side. "Sam has got a crush, Sam has got a crush!" She sings. I shush her and poke her back. "I do not!" I gasp, putting on my best posh accent and cover my mouth with my hands. "Do so! You were basically drooling all over him!" I flick her softly and quicken my pace. Helena teases me the entire way home, earning shoves and pushes in return. We start to scale the millions of steps up to the twelfth floor where my apartment is. "So, how did you two meet?" She asks, wiggling her eyebrows suggestively. "Well, I was cleaning a room when the bath had overflowed. He came in, confessing that he left his bath on and we got to talking-" I'm cut off by Helena's hand blocking my path. I walk straight into it and knock the breath out my lungs. "He's a guest?! Sam, do you not know the hotel rules? No relationships with ANY guest!" She lectures me, waving her hands around in my face. "I know, but-" I start. "No buts! You cannot talk to Tom again unless you want to lose your job!" I whimper softly and strop up the stairs. Yeah, childish I know but she doesn't understand. I have an upperhand on Charlotte. SHE DOES NOT HAVE ANY POWER OVER ME ANYMORE. I relax as this wave of realisation hits me. No more abuse, no more punishments, no more bullying. She knows not to touch me now, I have all the blackmail I need to keep her at bay.

I slow my pace and a very out of breath Helena puffs up to the top step. I pull her into a huge hug, apologising for being so immature. She chuckles lightly and hugs me tighter. Together, we walk into my apartment. "Amy? You back yet?" I shout, hanging my coat on the peg next to my handbag. I hear her call from the other room. I amble along whilst scrolling through my phone, guided by Amy's voice into the lounge. "Ahem..." I look up and see two people sitting on the sofa. One is my roommate, the other has her back turned to me. But I'd recognise that hair anywhere.

Author's note #2: ALSO, I MIGHT CALL YOU MY WILDFLOWERS, WHAT DO YOU THINK? Too cringy?
