22. The Battle For Our Lives
As a disclaimer, I completely forgot how the Deathly Hallows goes. First, I hated the movies for it. Second, I haven't even read all the books yet. I'm sorry to anyone who feels like I missed something important!
Ever since that day, Greta always stuck by Neville. Together, they avoided Snape and his torture minions as much as they could, and even spilled their feeling to one another. You could even say that they were close friends.
One day, when all the Gryffindors waited for Neville in the common room, Neville returned with Harry, Hermione, and Ron. Everyone was excited to see them again.
"What happened here while we were gone?" Harry inquired. He had a right to ask about the current state of Hogwarts; it wasn't looking its best.
Neville explained everything, from Snape to the minions, and the Golden Trio carefully listened to every word.
"We're going to fix this, I promise," Harry assured.
"Voldemort is coming here to the school soon," Hermione informed. "Do you all know how to defend yourselves?"
"Of course!" Neville smiled. "We were all in Dumbledore's Army, remember?"
Hermione had just barely noticed Greta, who was standing in the back of the room.
"Greta, I missed you so much!" Hermione said as she squeezed Greta tight.
"I missed you too," Greta chuckled.
"How've you been? Is everything alright?"
Greta's mind flashbacked to all the torture and pain that she suffered through after Draco left.
"I'm fine."
Sure, her smile wasn't real, but she couldn't worry her friends more than they already were. They were all about to go to war.
A loud crash could be heard from outside. The building trembled for a while before coming to a stop.
"What was that?" Ron asked.
"He must've come," Harry muttered grimly. "We have to get going!"
Everyone ran after Harry out of the Gryffindor common room, and they all rushed to defend their beloved school.
Time Skip
Several hours had passed since the battle begun. Everyone was either fighting the Death Eaters or healing the injured. However, Greta found a place to hide and stayed put there, crying and mumbling to herself out of panic. She was never good under pressure and she wasn't brave like the Sorting Hat suggested.
She never had been.
As the explosions and shouting continued, Greta's breathing became rapid.
"Please, Dray-Draco, c-come b-back," she hyperventilated softly. "I-I need you."
She had lost Neville in all the newfound chaos, so she accepted that she would remain alone throughout the battle. Nobody was here for her now; not even her closest friends, who were all busy fighting for their lives. That only made Greta feel like more of a pathetic wuss.
It was too late now. She couldn't move from her hiding spot or else someone would cast a dangerous spell at her randomly. It was too risky.
The hiding place that she chose was a small closet underneath the stairs by the Room of Requirement. There were a couple of tall boxes laying around to hide behind, so she hoped that they would protect her momentarily.
Another loud and ear-splitting explosion occured. Greta quickly covered her ears with her trembling hands, and she squeezed her eyes shut for a moment or two before opening them again. Loud, rushing footsteps approached the closet door, and Greta immediately shoved herself into the closet corner. The doorknob quickly twisted open and a tall figure burst into the closet and slammed the door shut. He was panting heavily and even slid down to the floor leaning against the door.
"Merlin's Beard!"
Greta instantly recognized that voice.
"Draco?"
Her voice came out to be shakier than she expected.
Draco's attention turned to Greta. "Greta? What are you doing here?"
"I could ask the same thing."
"Lumos," Draco chanted. His wand lit up the closet, and Draco could see Greta's tearstained face. "Greta, are you alright?"
She let out a quiet squeak in response as she shook her head; her arms were wrapped around her knees and her head hung low.
Draco gently wrapped his arms around Greta and kissed her cheek before whispering brokenly, "I'm so sorry."
Those words were enough to snap Greta out of her shocked state and return the hug tightly. Loud sobs escaped from her throat as she clung to Draco longingly.
"I missed you s-so much! I thought I'd never see you again and-and I felt so weak without you," she wailed.
"I felt weak too." Draco's embrace grew tighter. "Powerless was all I felt while I was with them. I missed you with all my heart." She could sense a slight crack in his voice, as if he were trying to hold back tears of his own. "Thank you for waiting for me. You've been so brave."
"I'm not brave, Draco. I never have been."
"Yes, you are." Draco's grip became tighter. "You've always been brave to me. Please don't say things like that."
Greta sniffled in response and snuggled deeper into Draco's chest. Suddenly, all the growing exhaustion in her body released itself and she leaned against Draco tiredly.
"I'm so glad I found you," Draco admitted. "I feel relieved to know that you're alright."
"How did you get away from them?" Greta wondered.
"I didn't. They're sure to find me again. I just escaped from the Room of Requirement. Potter saved me from a huge fire that erupted there."
"Harry... saved you?"
Draco nodded. "I thought he would leave me to die, but he turned his broom around and flew me out. I'm glad he did. I wouldn't have seen you again if the fire got to me."
Greta had never expected Harry to save Draco's life, but now wasn't the time to let others die, no matter the rivalries. Everyone had to get out of this alive.
"We need to get out of the school," Draco said. "I need you to get out of here before you get seriously hurt."
"What about you?"
"I'll be fine as long as I don't disobey Voldemort. He'll let me live if I carry out his orders."
Greta didn't feel that listening to Voldemort was the right thing to do. Instead of stating her opinion, she nodded and stood up with Draco. If Draco was confident that he would be ok, then he probably would.
Draco checked the hallway and ordered, "Go! The coast is clear!"
Greta followed Draco around the school, trying to avoid random spells and the other Death Eaters. Finally, they reached the entrance.
"We're gonna make it!" Draco laughed.
Greta cracked a smile. He could be so adorable at times.
"Not so fast."
Draco hissed under his breath. "Bellatrix."
Bellatrix had her wand pointed at Greta and Draco. "Where do you think you're going?"
"Away from here," Draco stated.
"Shouldn't you be killing people like her, Draco? You're disobeying the Dark Lord, you know."
"I don't care. I have to keep her safe."
"I'll just kill her myself then. That way, you won't fail the Dark Lord a second time."
"Sectumsepra!" Draco shouted. Bellatrix dropped to the ground, small pools of blood escaping her skin.
"That's the spell that--"
"That Harry used on me." Draco interrupted Greta. "I know. C'mon, let's go!"
A large group of students and faculty had been gathered around the outside of the school, forcing Greta and Draco to hide along with them.
Voldemort himself stood in the middle. Harry lay limp in his arms.
"Harry Potter is dead!" Voldemort announced. "You will no longer have any hope from now on. I will rule the wizarding world and there's nothing you can do to stop me."
Narcissa Malfoy checked to see if Harry was in fact dead, and she nodded her head to Voldemort. She joined the rest of the Death Eaters.
"Draco."
Narcissa's voice sounded pleading.
Greta looked up to see that Draco was trembling. He tried to remain as calm as he could. He glanced over at Greta, unsure of what to do. She squeezed his hand, nodded, and the two of them made their way to Narcissa.
"Who is this lovely lady, Draco?" Voldemort spoke softly.
"She's my girlfriend," Draco replied honestly. "She's coming home with me and my mother."
"Are you so sure about that?" Voldemort moved in closer to the teens. He wrapped the both of them into a gentle but creepy hug. "You've pleased me so far, Draco. Don't disappoint me. Is the girl an ally or not?"
Draco took some time to find the right words. "She's my ally. She wouldn't ever be on your side."
Greta wore a fearful expression. What are you doing, Draco?!
"I see..." Voldemort brought his wand to Greta's throat. "Well then, I guess she has to die. It's a shame, Draco. She is real pretty."
He's such a creep!
"Wait!" Neville pleaded. "Before you harm her, can I just say a few words?"
Voldemort lowered his wand. "Who are you?"
"I'm Neville Longbottom, and I'd like to say something." The other students waited with anticipation. "Harry may have died, but he hasn't left us. He's standing here beside all of us now and he'll never abandon us. You may have an army, Lord Voldemort, but we have something else that you don't have."
"What would that be?" Voldemort sneered.
"Love," Neville simply said. "Love is our strongest weapon, and we will use it to defeat you." He raised his wand.
Suddenly, Harry stood up and pointed his own wand at Voldemort. "AVADA KADAVRA!"
Voldemort recited the same spell, and he and Harry's wand streams hit the other. They were both struggling to keep their stream strong.
Draco pulled Greta aside to where Narcissa was standing, and the three of them held onto each other worryingly.
Finally, Voldemort's magic was weakened and Harry killed Voldemort.
