07. The Loss Of A Loved One

A month had passed and it was time for the final round of the Triwizard Tournament and everyone was sitting on the bleachers, cheering for the competitors. While Hermione, Ron, and Greta were trying to find a spot to sit, Greta saw Draco waving excitedly at her from a few rows away. Greta waved back eagerly, a wide smile on her face.

"Who're you waving to?" Ron asked.

"Uh, just that third year I was talking about," Greta lied.

"ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS!!" Dumbledore spoke through a magical megaphone. Greta, Ron, and Hermione all sat down on the bleachers. "WHO'S READY FOR THE FINAL CHALLENGE OF THE TRIWIZARD TOURNAMENT??"

Everyone cheered loudly.

"NOW, IT'S TIME TO MEET OUR COMPETITORS: VIKTOR KRUM, FLEUR DELACOUR, CEDRIC DIGGORY, AND HARRY POTTER!!"

More cheering followed. Greta clapped and cheered for Cedric and Harry. All four competitors stepped out onto the field and waved at the crowd. In front of them stood a humongous labyrinth that towered over everyone. The competitors stood next to each other on a white line near the entrance to the labyrinth and waited for permission to go.

"ON YOUR MARKS, GET SET… GO!!"

The four dashed into the labyrinth as quickly as they could. The crowd went wild. Then, a giant screen with a map of the labyrinth popped up in front of the crowd. Pictures of the competitors were moving in all sorts of directions. A few minutes had passed, but Viktor and Fleur weren't doing so well. Turns out the labyrinth was alive and it trapped the two in certain spots on the map. Luckily, Harry and Cedric were in the lead.

A half an hour had passed now and it appeared that Harry was in the lead with Cedric at second. Then, the map showed Harry and Cedric neck to neck, getting extremely close to the Triwizard cup. When both had reached it, their pictures disappeared, which seemed a little bit suspicious.

"Hey, where did their pictures go?" Greta asked Hermione. "They just… disappeared."

"I'm not too sure myself," Hermione said looking bewildered.

"Something about this doesn't seem right," Ron added. "Let's wait and see what happens.

Everyone in the crowd waited quietly with no way of knowing what would happen next.

Several suspenseful minutes passed until Harry and Cedric appeared in front of the crowd. While everyone cheered, Greta sensed that something wasn't right. Cedric was laying on the grass very still and Harry was leaning over him, panicking. Harry was hitting Cedric's chest and calling out his name. Then it hit Greta.

Cedric was dead.

Greta clutched her chest and started to hyperventilate. She stood up and ran away from the stadium.

"Greta, where are you going?" Hermione yelled.

Greta didn't listen to Hermione and kept running until she reached a tree to hide behind. Still clutching her chest, Greta's vision became blurry as her eyes filled themselves with tears of grief. Her stomach began to feel nauseated and she started to take short, small breaths as she silently cried. Greta was panicking severely and her head ringed.

Suddenly, she felt a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Hey, are you ok?"

Greta jumped and turned her head to face Draco. She shook her head and whimpered. More tears fell.

"Why're you crying? Did something happen in there?" Draco questioned with concern.

"He's dead," Greta stated bluntly. "Cedric's dead."

"How can you tell?"

"I just can. The way Harry leaned over him, how still Cedric was, and how panicked Harry looked. He's dead, Draco!"

Greta started to tremble and she leaned against the tree for support. Draco embraced her and started to stroke her hair gently.

"It's ok. It's going to be ok," Draco whispered. "Please don't cry."

Greta clung to Draco's coat tightly and whimpered, "He was my friend… and I loved him."

Draco hesitated to speak before rubbing Greta's back up and down to calm her.

"Losing the ones you love is hard, isn't it?" He squeezed Greta closer to his chest. "We'll go through this together."

"Thank you, Draco," Greta said, her voice cracking a bit. "I wish you could've known him "

"I wish I could've, too," Draco admitted. "I guess it's too late for me now."

"ALL STUDENTS REMAIN SEATED UNTIL WE DISMISS YOU." Even from a distance, Draco and Greta could hear Dumbledore's voice through his megaphone.

"Crap!" Greta scolded herself. "I shouldn't have run off like that. I'm such an idiot." She started to smack her forehead repeatedly.

"No, no, no! You're not an idiot," Draco fretted. "We just gotta join the crowd of students when they pass by here. We're not that far away from the stadium."

"You're right," Greta sighed. She hung on tighter to Draco. The last of her tears fell slowly down her face. "I'm sorry! I completely soaked your coat."

"It's fine. Don't worry about it," Draco shushed. He went back to rubbing Greta's back gently. "All that matters is making sure you feel better."

"Ok."

Then, a big group of students started to walk past them. It was their chance to sneak into the crowd!

"Come on, let's get in there. Can you stand up?" Draco asked.

Greta nodded then stood up with Draco. Draco grabbed Greta's hand and pulled her into the crowd of students with him.

"Here. Just hold on to my hand so that we won't get lost," Draco offered.

Greta nodded and held on tighter. When all the students reached the Hogwarts castle, Dumbledore announced that all students were to return to their common rooms.

"Well, I'll see you tomorrow, ok? I'll check up on you then."

"Thank you for everything, Draco. I'll see you later."

Greta turned away and walked gloomily to her common room. Right when she arrived, she got ready for bed right away and didn't even bother to eat anything. She just layed down on her bed and tried to go to sleep. This didn't work.

"Greta! There you are! We've been looking all over for you." Hermione had entered the room and stood next to Greta's bed.

"I don't wanna talk about it," Greta mumbled.

"You don't even want to eat anything?"

Greta shook her head.

"Ok, then… I'll be downstairs with Harry and Ron if you need anything."

Hermione left.

After that, Greta just layed in silence. She couldn't seem to fall asleep at all, which frustrated her. Soon, a small eagle owl swooped into the dormatory's window and hopped over to Greta. It was holding a letter and a small, colored box with a ribbon in its beak. Greta carefully removed the package and the letter from the owl and petted it on the head. She opened the letter. It said:

          Dear Greta,
Here's some treats to help you feel better! I know losing someone is difficult, but please don't be too sad. I bet Diggory would rather see you smile.
                                    Sincerely,
                                           Draco

Inside the small box were some treats; probably from Honeydukes.

When did he have the time to get these? Greta thought. Then she realized that he must have already had them before. Greta took out a quill and a piece of parchment and wrote:

        Dear Draco,
Thank you so much for the treats and everything you've done for me today. You're the best friend that anyone could have. I hope you have a good night!
                           Your Friend,
                                  Greta

Greta gave the letter to the eagle owl, gave the owl a kiss on the head, and sent it outside to deliver the letter. Despite losing her friend, Greta felt just a little bit better.

Before she slipped under her blanket, she opened the drawer to her nightstand and pulled out a necklace given to her from Draco during winter break. She usually wore the necklace during classes and took it off afterwards. Greta gently clutched the necklace in her hand and held it against her chest as she made her way under her blanket. As she laid in her bed, she stared at the golden necklace with a ruby gemstone in the middle. Those were the Gryffindor colors. Staring at the golden necklace was just enough to put Greta to sleep.
