DAY TWO

Day Two – Morning

(Y/n)’s POV

Bakugo spent most of the night loading the rifle, shooting the living room wall, reloading the rifle, and shooting the living room wall again, repeating the process over and over until around 1:20 a.m, when he was no longer in denial of the futility of his efforts. Only a few bullets are left.

No matter how many times he used the rifle, the wall didn’t even show a dent. This Terror House must be made from an impenetrable material, impervious to close-range rifle shots.

Bakugo is currently hunched over on the living room floor, the empty rifle in his clasped hands and resting on his lap. He’s been like that since 1:45 a.m.

The rest of our companions are fast asleep in various places throughout the living room, curled up in blankets we gathered from various room throughout the Terror House.

I am awake, sitting alone on the couch, watching Bakugo to see if he makes a sudden movement. He might be asleep, or he might be coming to terms with out new reality and has traveled into the depths of his mind to do so.

I didn’t sleep much, but I don’t care. I just want to make sure my friends are cared for.

The digital clock on the side table near me glows 7:08 in bright red letters.

I feel a shift in pressure on the couch cushions; someone has seated himself besides me.

“Couldn’t sleep?” Izuku asks in a quiet voice, careful not to wake the others.

I sigh and tear my gaze away from a motionless Bakugo, “No…” I whisper out.

Izuku runs his fingers through his curls, “Me either…”

A few minutes of silent surrounds us both. The sleeping bodies of our friends scattered throughout the living room sure do look like a collection of corpses in this lighting.

So,” Izuku speaks again, breaking me out of my thoughts. “What’s the plan for today, (Y/n)?”

I think for a moment. We can’t exactly hold a proper funeral for Kirishima, since he just… disappeared.

“I guess we should investigate the locked safe in the basement once everyone wakes up. It’s Team Two’s turn to investigate. I’ll switch to Team Two since they, uh, just lost one member.”

“Alright…” Izuku nods slowly, his eyes not holding their usual brightness to them, “Want to get some breakfast?”

“Sure.” I find the urge to send him a small smile.

(After Breakfast)

Everyone has woken up and filled their stomachs with cereal, now ready to start another day of trying to escape the Terror House.

Bakugo seems to have snapped out of his defeated mood, and is now more eager to escape than ever. The rifle he had been holding all night is discarded on the couch, still loaded with the few remaining bullets.

“Let’s go.” Todoroki orders the rest of Team Two, getting straight to business, beckoning them with his gaze to follow him towards the basement stairs.

Team Two waves their temporary goodbyes to Team One while Todoroki is in charge of the walkie-talkie.

Shinso stays close to me, trying to seem protective, but it’s obvious he’s just a bit fearful of traveling into the basement again.

“Where is the light switch?” Todoroki questions, peering around in the basement’s darkness.

“I’ve got it.” Shinso announces, flipping the light switch one. He smiles slightly with pride.

The basement is once again illuminated. The overhead lights are like those of a convenience store; the dust particles in the air practically shine as they drift past our eyes.

“So, where is this safe, (Y/n)?” Todoroki’s smooth voice asks, glancing over at me.

I point towards the opposite end of the basement where a grey safe door is ingrained into the wall, partially hidden by empty cardboard boxes stacked on top of each other.

Todoroki swiftly walks over and starts pushing the boxes aside, Shinso and I getting closer to the safe door, inspecting it.

“Any ideas on how to get this thing open?” I question and look towards both boys.

Todoroki lets out a small hum, tapping the lock mechanism on the safe door, “How ever we decide to open this, I don’t think it’ll be too difficult.”

“And why is that?” Shinso asks with a raised eyebrow, his tired eyes scanning the safe himself.

“This isn’t an actual lock.”

“Well,” I start and place my hands on my hips, “If this isn’t an actual lock, then that must not be an actual safe.”

I step closer to the supposed ‘safe’ and start feeling around it’s edges, being very precise as my fingertips run along the crease between it and the wall.

“What’re you doing, (Y/n)?” Shinso gives me an odd look.

“Trying to see if there’s…” My fingertips stop on the sides of the ‘safe’ where parts of the crease are slightly larger than the rest. I never finish my sentence.

I slide my index finger into those sides of the safe, feeling for a grip inside the crease. Once I sense that there is enough friction between my fingers and the inner surface on the crease, I yank hard.

The ‘safe’ door pops off, ramming into my chest; the force of its impact makes me stumble backwards and fall onto the concrete floor.

“Shit!” I curse as I get a face full of dust and dirt.

“(Y/n)!” Shinso quickly rushes over to me and grabs the ‘safe’ door from me, tossing it aside. He then helps me to my feet as I brush the dust off my clothes and face.

“Thanks…” I cough out, my nose scrunching up from the amount of dust I had inhaled.

“It looks like you were correct, (Y/n).” Todoroki announces, peering into the new finding, “It’s not a safe at all. It’s a ventilation system.” He takes a small step closer, his eyes squinting, “There seems to be a small amount of fresh air coming from inside – that mean there should be a path in this system that leads to the outside. This could very well be an escape route for us.”

“Well, we’ll need someone to test that theory…” He continuous to mutter to himself, dual colored eyes scanning the vent.

The walkie-talkie suddenly comes alive in Todoroki’s pocket, a voice raising above the static. “Team Two? Come in, Team Two. This is Midoriya from Team One.”

“Midoriya, is something wrong?” Todoroki brings the walkie-talkie to his mouth, his eyebrows furrowing.

“No… Just wondering if everything’s alright; you guys have been gone for a while…”

I lean closer to the walkie-talkie, “We discovered that the locked safe isn’t locked nor a safe at all! It’s a vent that was disguised as a safe! We’re going to need to investigate the ventilation system to see if it may lead to an exit outside.”

“A vent? In the basement? That seems peculiar…” Izuku comments, his voice falling silent in thought.

I blink a few times, huh… I guess I didn’t think about how odd that really is – a vent in a basement… hmm…

“Are you sure it’s not a trap?” Izuku continues on after a moment silence.

“We are not certain of anything.” Todoroki replies, “But there’s only one way to find out.”

“Well don’t do anything yet – I’ll gather the others, and we’ll meet you three down there shortly. Then we’ll decided what to do about the vent. Team One, over and out.” Static replaces Izuku’s voice and Todoroki turns the walkie-talkie off.

“I wish we still had our Quirks.” Todoroki sighs out softly, his eyes glancing at his hands, “It would be much easier for us to escape with our abilities.”

“I understand.” I empathize with him, “If I could use my Quirk, I could just turn time back so we could prepare for this shitty event.”

“Not like I could have done much in this situation with my own Quirk anyway.” Shinso shrugs his shoulders halfheartedly.

We all stand there in silence, our breathing the only thing heard at the moment. Soon, Team One comes down the basement stairs, “Okay,” Bakugo starts, his narrowed eyes meeting our own, “Show us this fucking vent.”
