Chapter 5: Insanity
The silently ate dinner at the kitchen island given that the dinning room table would be too big for just the two of them alone.
The only sounds heard were their cutlery against their plates, the cups as they would be picked up and set down once again.
Neither one of them wanted to say what they had been thinking, but unbeknownst to each other, they had been thinking roughly the same thing. That something was wrong with this house. Before weeks ago they had briefly mentioned of things that they had heard, but never of the things they had seen.
The things that seemed as if it were picking at their head, picking at their heart. It felt as if whatever was in that house knew all their fears and secrets. And it was taking advantage of that, tapping into it and bringing it to life, but only for them to see.
They couldn't deny that at first they had thought that they were going crazy, but now they knew they weren't.
But it was merely a matter of time if and when their mind will break.
"How about we stay at a hotel for tonight?" Jamie offered her opinion as she set down her fork down on the edge of her plate, no matter how long it was, she just wanted to be out of the house even if it were a day.
A single day of rest.
Jacob seemed to ponder on what Jamie had said and after a few moments he nodded, "Okay. After dinner we'll look for the closest one." He didn't want to say it but he too wanted to stay away from the house.
The image of seeing Jamie sprawled on the ground in pain still lingered in his mind. Every time he saw his wife, he felt as if the image overlapped with each other. And it had happened various times, thinking that his wife had been hurt when in truth she wasn't home or was in another place of the house.

It was small, but to them it was perfect. The room, short notice reservation, was small, but they didn't care.
They didn't care because they were out of the house, that was all that mattered, but in the end, it seemed as if the house didn't leave them.
Waking with a frightened gasp, Jamie sat up in bed and looked around the room expecting to see what she had seen. In her dream she was back in the house, every time she had walked out of the house, she would end up back inside again. It was an endless loop, one that each time became worse and worse.
She licked her dry lips and turned towards her husband as she felt him move against her, his shoulder bumping onto her side. She had heard him mumble her name.
"Jacob are you okay?" She asked reaching over towards the lamp and turned it on, then she turned back to her husband and saw that he was asleep.
His expression morphed to one of pain and discomfort.
Jamie placed her hand against his shoulder and shook it, "Jacob, wake up. Are you?" She called out as she shook his shoulder again.
"Are you okay?" She whispered out to him waiting for him to respond after waking up.
He let out a deep sigh, closed his eyes for a few seconds then opened them to look at Jaime. He reached up and placed his right hand on Jamie's which was still on his shoulder. He squeezed it tightly, almost as if he didn't want to let her go.
He didn't say nor did she ask what had happened. She knew he needed time to think, and he needed time to think on what he had seen in his dream.
A dream that had plagued him for a while, seeing his wife hurt or dead.

Their stay in the hotel was three days and nights, they had thought that they had escaped the house, but they never did. But it was better than being in the house where it seemed that everything got worse as the seconds passed.
Jamie could hear giggling coming from the hallway upstairs mere feet away from the laundry room, something that was common to hear. But she didn't expect to hear her husband.
"Don't worry, she's not here. We'll be fine." Jaime heard him say as a small sigh was heard.
Jamie dropped the folded shirt onto the ground and quickly ran to the door and swung it open, opened her mouth ready to yell at whoever was there.
But there was nothing, not even the sounds she had been hearing seconds ago were there.
Jamie clenched her teeth tightly and walked out, she knew it was her imagination, but what if it were really true. What if her husband was cheating on her?
As she walked near the staircase, she felt a cold breeze behind her and then a hard shove on her back.
The only sound was a sharp gasp, a heavy laughter and the sound of her hitting the bottom of the stairs.

"Are you happy now!" Jacob yelled out, "Is this what you wanted?" His chest hurt as he thought of his wife who was in critical condition, "I don't need to see what happened, but it was you wasn't it!" There was no doubt in his mind that whatever was in the house had almost killed his wife.
Jacob walked around getting things he needed when he felt a sharp pain in his chest. Staggering a few steps he collapsed onto the ground, he shakily reached for his phone and dialed 911, but just as the phone was answered he heard a sinister laughter at his ear.

"This house was built in 1885, needless to say there had been some reconstruction to this place to keep it as it is, but some of the original parts of the house are still here." She lightly tapped her left foot on the wooden floor, "This is part of the original house." She explained to the small family of four as they walked around inside the house.
