Chapter 3: Murmur

It wasn't odd or weird to hear things in a new house.  It could have been the nervous of moving into a new house and new town.  Or the sounds of the house settling in with new weight after being empty for so long.

That's what it was thought as in the first days following after they moved in, and they were able to ignore it.  And besides it wasn't like they had the time to really think about it, with all the work cut out for them.

From finishing cleaning the house from the inside out, putting in all the furniture in place once it came, of course with the help of the ones who delivered it.  Putting all their items in place.

Cleaning the front yard and back yard, taking out any weeds, and making sure there weren't any insects that could lead to a pest infestation.

They had no time to pay attention to anything going on in the house, though it was annoying at times.  Especially when they would be awoken in the middle of the night with a sound, a sound that they each heard or a sound that only one was able to hear.

Jacob had gone to work, his work had transferred his resulting in them moving to a different town and home.  But Jamie had yet to find a job, but that was okay, she could work on any lingering work that had to be at home.

They had no children to worry about, yet, so she could take her time.  The house which was too big for them, would have not been bought if they hadn't had plans of starting a family.  A family they had started to think about before buying the house.  And now that the house was big, it had enough space for them to start a family of their own.

Jamie was currently cleaning the attic, not to be spotless and perfect, but enough to make sure there was nothing wrong and no insects or rats were there.  As she cleaned she heard what seemed like a murmur a whisper.

"Jacob." She called out as she turned her head towards the open door waiting to see if she could see or hear her husband, but there was nothing.  She set down the towel on the window seal and walked over to the open door and walked out, "Jacob is that you?" She called out again, and once again there was nothing.

Jamie frowned in confusion, "Maybe I'm just hearing things." She sighed out as she went back to finish what she was doing.

She didn't hear the murmurs or whispers again, at least not in that moment.

It was two weeks now after they had moved into their new home, and things had been.... odd.

Almost every night, Jamie had nightmares.  These nightmares were ones where she was alone in the house at times.  And some other times in her dream, Jacob was there with her.

No matter the setting, it always ended in such a terrifying way, one of them died or both of them did.  But always in them, she could hear voices.

She had mentioned them to Jacob, but he merely brushed it off as her still getting used to the house, but at some point, he as well began to have odd dreams.

And not just the dreams, he also began to hear the same murmurs Jamie had at the beginning.  He tried to find a reasonable solution for it, but none could be found.

"Is this place haunted?" Jamie had asked one day after they had heard some sounds, "I mean it is an old house, so maybe it could be.  Right?" She said as she held the hem of her shirt in her hands tightly.

Jacob said nothing for a few seconds, "Not sure." Was all he said.  They drifted to silence, except the sound of the television silencing any sound that could have been going on.

"Jacob." Jamie whispered out in the darkness as she quickly tried to shake her husband awake, "Jacob wake up." She harshly shook him but got no response.  She pulled her hand away and sat up, "Jacob!" She called out as she turned on the lights and turned towards his side of the bed, but it was empty.

Jamie's mouth went dry, she could still feel the feeling of her husband's shoulder on her hand.  She felt him there, there was no way that she imagined it.

She slowly reached out to feel the bed, but it was cool, not warm at all.  Just as she was beginning to feel a small panic settle in, she heard the door open.  She quickly turned around and saw her husband walking out of the bathroom that was in the bedroom.

"What are you awake so early for?" He asked as he rubbed a towel against his wet hair as he walked over to the bed.

Jamie looked over at the digital clock on their nightstand, it was barely four in the morning, "You should go back to sleep." He said as he went to her and slowly pushed her back down on the bed and pulled the blankets over her and tucked her in.

Jamie couldn't say anything as she looked at her husband, the one who she thought was beside her just minutes ago, 'Was it all a dream?' She wondered as she settled in as her husband tucked her in.

"Isn't it too early for you to be up, you don't go to work until seven." Jamie said as she watched her husband walk around the room.

"Remember I mentioned that I have a meeting today.  I have to be there a bit earlier." He said as he picked out his clothing for the day from the closet.

"Oh, you're right." She said, "By any chance did you hear anything?"

The reason she had tried to wake her husband up was that she had been hearing sounds, and wanted to make sure she wasn't imagining them.

Jacob buttoned up his shirt, "No.  I couldn't hear anything with the water on in the shower."
