Chapter 1. Marked

It's been a week after I turned 18 and everything seems to be going well. I don't feel any different besides having this fever for a while. I don't know where it came from or if I got it from someone at school but I have it so might as well let it sail. But today something seemed off, I could feel it. Something was wrong or something was going to happen. I've always been able to sense things like this, it's a gift passed down through the generations. Every women in my family has had this gift for so long, we've always listened to it.

Let me explain what I come from, I come from a bloodline of Ancient Witches. We've lived for as long as there was believed to be a God. Some of us were even at the Salem Witch Trials, two of my ancestors lost their lives. I won't name who though, that's to protect them. Over the years my family has hid every well from those who would hurt us because we are born differently. In my living family right now, my Grandmother or Nana is the wise one, she's taught me all I've known. My mother helped a little but she refused the blood in her veins after the divorce with my father. Only women are born with the witches blood but some times there are males. One being my Uncle JJ, we call him that because his name is Jonathan Jones Rosemain so to make his own life easier we call him JJ, Rosemain is the name of my bloodline. I'm only a Storm because of my mom didn't want me to go to school with a witch name. I never like her for that. My family are the Rosemain's but if you look us up, you won't find a signal thing about us. That's how well we've stayed hidden. Now a days things for witches have improved, people no longer try to kill us every time we walk out the house. Everything was peacefully for a time until the world found out about Vampires.

The House of Night is a place where young Fledglings who have been recently Marked go to school. They live there too so when humans found out about it, their attention was pulled away from witches. But never before has a Witch been turned into a Fledgling. Until me.

As I was got to school that day my cousins Maria and Lora were waiting. They were the twins of my generation and they like to show it off. They enjoyed messing with people by changing their clothes and going to each others classes. The teachers would get mad but the twins would only laugh. As I walked in I could hear them talking about the new kid, Nathan Young and his sexy hair and bitching sense of style. I never understood that about them.

"Hey Birdy!" Maria shouted that stupid nickname of mine. Nana started that when I was little and she calls me her little Birdy.

"Hey Twins. So how was Nathan last night?" I asked them, they smiled and started to laugh.

"He couldn't handle us, he thought we were going to have sex with him." Maria said and Lora finished the rest.

"Nope, we tried to turn him into a frog." Lora said then started laughing even more. "Would have succeed if Gran hadn't walked in." Lora said trying to catch her breath. I call her Nana, they call her Gran. But she is the same person to us all, the oldest living woman of our families bloodline. So she is known as our wise woman so from a young she had been teaching me many things about being the next wise woman. I don't mind being the next wise woman but it really wasn't my own choice.

"So tells us what's wrong?" Maria asked me while we walked through the halls.

"Yeah you seem kinda sick." Lora added while they both looked closely at me.

"I have a small fever that's it. Nothing to worry about, they never last long or too bad." I told them but they seemed to be believing it little.

"Well if it get's worse just let your two dear cousins, okay." Lora said hugging Maria.

"Yeah let us know, okay." Maria added hugging Lora back.

"I will twins, see you sixth hour." I said turning down another hall.

"See ya Birdy!" They shouted heading down another hall.

They were right though, this fever is strange. Never in my life has I ever been sick, it's kinda of a magic thing Nana said. Barely any women in our family has been sick with things ranging from fever or cold too cancer or death-like problems. So for one of us, a future wise woman to be sick is strange. They'll probably tell Nana about it in first hour. I took my seat in Math, funny I had this class since I'm pretty good at it. No one liked it, no one could ace it but me. Bullying was a big part of my world because of it. From a young age children of our family were taught many things that would be considered "advance" for our ages so everything they teach in school, I already know. So I would just sit there and look out the window, I'd use the air to mess with some people just walking by. When the class started, everything became dizzy. The room started spinning and I stood up then stumbled out the room. I was in the hall, hand over my heart as I began breathing heavily. Something was definitely wrong with me right now, I moved down the hall trying to find the nurse but it's hard when everything is messed up. That's when I felt it, eyes on me and when I turned around someone was right there. Last thing I remember was that person lunging at me, I was knocked to the ground where I blacked out.

I woke up with an annoying bright light shinning down on me. I slowly opened my eyes to see a dream catcher above my head, I smiled thinking of Nana. That's when I heard Nana talking to someone, she sounded upset about something. My head felt like it was burning, someone put a hot coal on my head. I reached up and touched my head, pulling my hand back from the burning feeling. I slowly sat up and went to a mirror, pulling my long black hair back to see a semi-filled in crescent moon on my forehead. My eyes widened when I saw it, I was Marked?! WHAT!! I stepped back while my heart rate was beating very fast. I looked at the mirror again, that glass shattered and fell into the sink. Nana came in and hugged me trying to calm me down, keeping me in her arms.

"Be calm my dear raven. It's going to be okay I promise." She said shushing me, calming me as she started singing a soft chant to me. The Twins came in with shocked faces but they came over and hugged me too.

"We're here for you." They whispered to me. I was calming down with the words and hands of my family. After an hour everything was going to fast, we live in a small town in Illinois so they called the House of Night in Chicago to send someone down here to talk to me. I was in a chair holding the amulet Nana gave me when I was born. It has never left my neck since I was born, it will forever to stay around my neck. HEKATE please give strength for what is to come.
