20 | Far Behind
As soon as the door closed, there were officers by my side, escorting me down the hall. They led me to a room where a woman and a man stood, talking quietly. I'd spoken to the woman when I got here. She explained what had happened with Chris.
"Ah, sir. What-"
"I need to speak with the doctor in charge of Chris."
"That would be me." She told me.
I raised my eyebrows. "I need to speak with you. Alone."
She nodded. The man and the officers left the room and she shut the door. "What did you need to talk about?"
"Whatever you're doing to him stops now."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
I stepped closer, backing her against the wall. "You know exactly what I'm talking about. I don't know what you're doing to him, but I do know that whatever it is, is destroying him, making him crazy. I suggest you stop."
She didn't respond.
"You know who he is, yes? What he is?"
She nodded.
"But you don't know who I am yet. You don't want to know. If you think he's bad, you're in for a surprise. End the treatments or you'll find out." I spoke, my voice low and quiet.
"I-I'll see what I can do."
"Get me your warden. I want to speak with him."
"Of course."
She left the room and I sat down in one of the chairs. I don't know what I'm going to do. I can't leave Chris here like that, but if I bring him out, he might not get better. He might just stay like that. He might never remember anything. I had no idea what exactly had been done to Chris. I didn't even know why they did anything to him. It didn't make sense. There was nothing wrong with him.
I looked up as a man entered the room. I assumed he was the warden.
"I'm the warden here. You wanted to speak with me?"
I nodded, standing up. "Yeah. I have problem..."
"What's your problem?"
"Whatever is being done to him needs to end."
He raised an eyebrow. "I'm not sure what you mean."
"Yes, you do. Don't pull that shit. You're the warden. Nothing goes down without your knowledge. You know exactly what I mean and I will tell you the same thing I told that doctor..." I spoke. "You may know who Chris is, but you don't know who I am. You do not want to know who I am. If these "treatments" continue, you'll find out just how bad I can be."
"Don't threaten me."
"I'm not threatening you. I'm simply making a promise. And I want visitation for him."
"I can't do that."
"Why not?"
"He's not in the right state of mind."
"Oh really? So why's he here? Hm? And not in an institution? If he's not in the right state of mind, why was he convicted?"
"He became unstable after he came here."
"Hm...I wonder how that happened."
He shrugged. "No idea."
I laughed a little. "Whatever you're doing here is illegal. I know the law, warden, and if people were to find out there you're sanctioning illegal treatments and misdiagnosing inmates, well...let's just say you'll have some problems."
He stared me down, not saying anything.
"I'll make sure he cooperates. I'll be back next week though, whether you allow him visitation or not."
I left the room and went back down the hall to where Chris was. Before I approached the door, I pulled out a burner I had in my pocket and stored my own number in the contacts.
"Unblock the door. It's me."
He stepped into view and moved the table out of the way again. I pushed the button that unlocked the door and stepped inside.
"I spoke to them. I'm going to speak to your lawyer though and see if there's anything he can do. I made it clear that if they do that again, they'll have to deal with me. If they try, fight it as best you can. I'm going to give you a phone but don't let them know you have it." I told him. "I'll be back to see you again next week."
He nodded. I hugged him, slipping the phone from my pocket to his.
"My number is in there. If something happens and you need me to come, I will. Just let me know."
He nodded. "Thank you."
"For now, just cooperate." I turned and left the room.
This was bad. There was no way this would end well. I needed to talk to Ryan Ashley.
I left the prison, and as soon as I got outside, I dialed her number. It rang a few times before she picked up.
"Did you see him?"
"Yeah. But it's not good."
"What's happening?— hang on. I'm going to put you on speaker....alright. What happened?"
"He doesn't remember anything aside from a few names. He's hearing voices. He's lost his mind." I explained. "They're doing something to him. I don't know what, but he says that the doctor refers to them as "treatments." He says they hurt. I gave him my burner in case something happens but I'm coming back next week."
"What the fuck? Why would they do something like that to him? I don't understand."
"No idea. But I'm going to try to get him out of there. I need to speak with his lawyer though. Get him to come to Chris's. Make sure everyone's there. I'll be there in a few hours."

I pulled into Chris's driveway and parked my car. I pulled the keys out and got out of the car. I walked up to the door, watching it open before I could even knock.
Andy stood there, giving me a soft smile. As soon as I stepped inside, he hugged me. "It's good to see you."
"You too." I said. "Is everyone here?"
"Yeah. Kitchen."
I nodded and followed him into the kitchen.
I was instantly bombarded by hugs and people saying they were happy to see me. I didn't expect literally everyone to come, but I guess they realized how important this was.
After all of the greetings, I sat down at the table, looking around me. Chris's lawyer sat at the other end of the table.
"Alright, so...I'm guessing you've all seen the news today. Or at least heard what happened." I said softly. "I went there to see him. And...well, it's bad."
They were all watching me.
"Chris is....He's losing his mind. They're doing something to him. He's not okay. He doesn't remember anything, aside from some names. He hears voices. He told me that they give him these treatments that hurt. They keep him locked in solitary confinement. The reason today happened was because they decided they wanted to test how Chris would behave with others. It didn't go well, clearly. But we need to get him out of there."
I looked over at Chris's lawyer.
"That's why I needed you here. I don't know what will happen since he killed those people today."
"Well, a lot of things could happen. He'd end up back in court no matter what. I know how all of you work, but the best way to do this is legally. He's not in the right state of mind and I can use that to my advantage. He'd have to plead insanity. He'd be institutionalized. Then after that, if there's enough proof, I can build a case against the prison. Medical malpractice, discrimination, etcetera, and possible get him released."
"You can't put him in an institution. He may as well just stay in prison." Spencer said.
I shook my head. "I don't like it either but I don't think there's any other way."
"Prison transport." Remington spoke.
"Remi...shut up." Andy sighed.
"It's a valid suggestion."
"Sure! As an absolute last resort."
It was quiet for a moment before Spencer spoke up. "That could work..."
"If that's the route you all are taking, then I'm leaving." The lawyer spoke.
"No. We're not doing that. At least not yet." Ryan Ashley spoke. "We need to think about Chris here, not just ourselves. We need to take the legal route because that's what's safest for Chris. The only way we will go to extreme measures like that, is if all else fails."
"How would we get Chris an insanity plea?" Kuza asked.
"He'd need a psych eval. I would send one of my own doctors in to do it."
"And then what?"
"They deem him insane and then he'll go in front of a judge. He'll be sent to an institution."
"And to build a case against the prison, what would have to be done?" I asked.
"I'd need proof of malpractice, other than what Chris says. Obtain that any way you can and I'll make it legal."
