34: Come Back Home
Jin spent the night in my bed. It was nice being able to wake up next to him without having someone else with the intent of killing us standing there, too. As sunlight streamed in through the edges of the blinds, I sighed and curled into his body, enjoying the moment of silence that was only broken by his soft, relaxed breaths.
After a few minutes, I started to roll over and crawl out of the bed but Jin's arms snaked around me, pulling me back into him.
"Don't leave. Not yet. I just want you to myself for five more minutes."
He couldn't see my smile as I tucked my head into the crook of his shoulder while he trailed fingertips over my bare back. I could hear the other guys moving around downstairs and knew they were getting ready for a shitty day just like I was. I didn't want to confront Ravn, so giving Jin more time was a win all the way around.
But before long, my bladder gave me no choice but to leave the warmth of Jin's embrace. I leaned over him and kissed him deeply before having to nearly run to the bathroom between my and Jungkook's room. When I slid the door from my side open, Jungkook was standing there with a toothbrush hanging out of his mouth.
"Good morning, Sun--"
--"Nope, no time for that," I said, cutting him off as I shoved him out the other door and closed it behind him. I giggled at his mumbled 'rude' from the other side.
"Sorry! I couldn't wait!"
I finished and washed my hands, then slid the door open to find an annoyed Kookie staring back at me from the other side. He brushed past me and spit into the sink before pointing his toothbrush at me like a weapon.
"I don't know if this whole sharing a bathroom thing is going to work out." He rinsed out his toothbrush and put it in the cabinet over the sink. "Or sharing a wall with you, for that matter. How many times did you two go at it last night?"
"That's none of your business," Jin answered, shoving us both towards Jungkook's bedroom.
"Yah! You've got your own bathroom," Jungkook shouted.
"I can't wait," Jin said with a smirk and a wink before shutting the door. I giggled and pushed Jungkook back toward his bed, grabbing the shirt he had lying there and throwing it at him.
"Come on, Kookie," I said with a smile. I gripped his elbow before he'd got his shirt over his head and pulled him toward the door. "Let's get some breakfast." His only answer was a semi-surly growl. I suppressed another giggle. Jealous Kookie was my favorite Kookie.
The mood was somber when we walked downstairs. No one really looked at me, even when they handed me a bowl full of food. I chewed my lip more than anything else, beginning to doubt my own plan. I tried to remind myself that I had no other choice, but Jin's words from the night before kept echoing in my head.
Even when we finished eating, no one made a move to stand. They were barely talking. It was like a fog was settling over the room, hushing our voices and amplifying our thoughts. Finally the weight of the emotions in the room drove me out of my seat.
"I'm doing this whether you want me to or not," I said to no one in particular, turning as I did and stomping off in the direction of the basement door. I had a good idea where I'd find Ravn. All I had to do was follow the sick feeling in my gut that I'd ignored every time I'd been down there since returning to the mansion. The wrongness of whatever Ravn was permeated the air like smoke from a nearly-dead fire that just needed one swift rush of wind to turn into an inferno.
I stood outside the locked door, just staring at it as Jin, Jungkook, Yoongi, and Taehyung stepped up around me. Jungkook and Taehyung had their guns out while Yoongi tapped away on his new tablet. Jin dropped his hand down on my shoulder.
"He hasn't talked to any of us since we brought him here. Nothing we do seems to phase him."
"His healing capabilities are off the charts," Yoongi added. "Even better than yours."
"That's reassuring," I murmured.
"You don't have to do this," Jungkook said, stepping up to my left and bending his head down close to my ear. "We can just get rid of him and find another way."
"There is no other way, Jungkook," I hissed, glaring up at him. I shook him and Jin off and squared my shoulders. "Open it."
With a sigh, Jin tapped a series of commands on the panel beside the door, then placed his hand on the scanner. After a series of beeps, the door hissed open. Ravn sat in the middle of a stark white room, shackled to the chair he sat in, and wearing the same clothes he'd been wearing that night at the auction house. They were filthy with blood stains, burn marks, and bullet holes peppered all over...and yet, there wasn't a mark on his perfectly smooth, tanned skin. If anything, he looked healthier.
He smiled up at me, turning his perfectly bow-shaped lips into a devastating smile.
"So they finally brought you to me." He sighed and straightened in his chair, crossing one leg casually over the other. "I was wondering when they would."
"We're not here for a pleasant chat," Jin snapped. "Tell us where Kai is being held and this will go much easier."
Ravn's eyes flicked up to Jin's for a moment, losing all the pleasantness they'd just held. The stare he gave Jin could've melted stone. When his gaze returned to me, the warmth was back, though there was something sinister hiding in the blackness of his eyes. I worked to suppress a shiver that threatened to pass over my spine. The wrongness of the man in front of me was so strong, I was about to lose my breakfast. Whatever he was, it wasn't entirely human.
If he was even human at all.
Ravn's smile returned as he tipped his head back. "If I was that easy, you wouldn't have had to bring her." His gaze traveled over my body for a minute before returning to my eyes. "You look different than I expected. I didn't even notice you at the auction." He leaned forward as if sharing a secret, scrunching his nose. "But we'll keep that to ourselves."
Something pressed at the edges of my thoughts, but I brushed it away, taking a step closer to Ravn. "Tell me how to find Kai."
"What's so special about this man? Why do you need him so badly? He's not like us. He's...disposable."
"Not to me."
Ravn smirked and leaned back, looking away as he sucked in a slow breath. "Was that you I felt yesterday? The power was...substantial."
I ignored his comment and opened my mind slightly, searching through the sudden haze in my thoughts as I looked for his. If he was as close to Hakyeon as I suspected, he had to have some useful information tucked under all those layers of psychosis. I just had to look deep enough.
Carefully, I pressed my abilities forward, methodically searching his brain for cracks that I could exploit. It was difficult, to say the least, trying to use my powers without them taking control of me. There was a reason I didn't go around taking control of people's minds all the time. It required the most power and focus, which opened me up to consumption by that which I was trying to wield.
Slowly, Ravn's eyes slid back to my own, the smile on his lips never wavering. We didn't move except to take a breath, so no one would have known what was happening if they hadn't been paying very close attention. I watched in horror as Ravn's irises expanded and contracted rapidly as if they were a camera lens trying to focus.
When you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you.
Somewhere in the dark recesses of my own mind, a man's voice came filtering in through the fog of my lost memories. Silky and seductive. And suddenly my mind was on red alert. My eyes widened. My pulse quickened. Ravn could do it, too.
I quickly pulled back on my abilities, but as I had opened up to find him, it had given him the opportunity he had been waiting for. The whole reason he'd held out through the torture so long. The whole reason he had stayed there this whole time when he could've escaped any time he pleased. The smile that had once been mysterious and sultry was now wickedly maniacal.
"Whoever fights with monsters should see to it that he does not become a monster in the process. And when you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you." Ravn's voice was darker...more ominous... as he worked to take over my mind. "Isn't that what we were always told? Not to go fight fire with fire lest we get burned?"
I felt him in my mind and pushed back with everything I had. I could feel him inside me, could feel my own darkness taking over as I tried to protect myself from the onslaught of his abilities. The men around me could sense something was wrong, but it hadn't hit them how serious the matter was until Jin turned and saw my face. With my powers wide open, I could see myself through his eyes. I could see the inky blackness spreading into my sclera...the veins turning dark under my skin. I could see what a monster I was becoming before them, but I was helpless to stop it. The room around us thrummed with the power of Ravn and I mentally waging war with each other.
"Your boy toy was right when he'd said we could track you through your powers. We've been watching you this whole time. They made me as something of a personalized bloodhound. I am just like you, only better and stronger. And I've been waiting for this moment for a very long time."
I was paralyzed in the grip of Ravn's power. Slowly, the restraints around his wrists and ankles fell away, hovering in mid-air as both of us struggled for control. Jungkook and Taehyung immediately raised their weapons, emptying their clips in his chest and head but it didn't stop him. It did distract him slightly. Just enough for me to gain control over my own voice.
"Run," I choked out, turning my eyes to Jin who was still standing beside me, his face a mask of terror and revulsion as he watched everything unfold before him. My voice didn't sound like my own. It was layered like there was more than one person inside me, speaking all at once. "They're here."
"The power you released the other night was unexpected," Ravn continued as if he couldn't even hear me. He cocked his head to the side, his black hair falling away from the corners of his gently sloping eyes. "What caused that, I wonder? It was delicious." He held me still as he walked forward. Jungkook had already reloaded his gun and was firing again, but the wounds were healing nearly as fast as they were being made.
"It was Namjoon, wasn't it? You always did have an affinity for the dominant types." Ravn chuckled. "Or so I've been told."
I saw his intention, but didn't have time to stop him. Pounding feet stormed down the hallway and I could feel Namjoon, Jimin, and Hobi as they neared. Ravn's smile was horrifying as he reached out with his powers and pulled Jungkook's gun from his hand. I pushed back with all of my strength, but he'd been able to get the jump on me. Though we were evenly matched, that brief second of advantage was all he needed. I was helpless to stop him as he raised the gun and fired, his stare never wavering from mine. Namjoon grunted as the men around me yelled, screaming profanities as the Klaxons blared overhead. I could hear the thump of a body slamming into the wall behind me, then slumping to the floor and I didn't have to turn to know it was Namjoon. I screamed out my own anguish and slammed against Ravn's mental harness around me, but it was no good. I was useless.
Ravn shoved out with his own powers, pushing the men out of our way and backing me up into the hallway. It took only a second to realize we weren't touching the ground anymore. My men lay dazed underneath us while blood poured from Namjoon's left shoulder. I couldn't even cry as I saw him because of the vice-like grip Ravn had on my mind. Tiny beads of sweat were popping up on his forehead from the mental strain of trying to keep me in control. Yoongi's serum had made me stronger, but it was taking too long to reach full potential.
More footsteps sounded from behind me as Ravn set us down on the floor. I had just enough control over myself that I could turn my eyes to the sound. Five more men were walking toward us, led by a short blonde guy with a demonic tilt to his grin.
"Is everything ready," Ravn asked without breaking his concentration.
"Our ride is waiting in the front," the short guy said, looking me over. "This is her? I expected more."
The rest of the guys laughed. Except for Ravn.
"Don't underestimate her," he snapped. "She's stronger than we thought. I can't hold her back much longer and with the things going through her head..."
As his eyes dilated again, I pictured his skin flaying from his bones. A cut opened up over his eye, healing almost immediately. The short guy glanced between us, taking in his boss' widened eyes and the cuts that kept appearing and disappearing on his perfect skin. The laughter died on all of their lips.
"Do it, Hwanwoong! Now!"
"Give me the syringe," Hwanwoong said, motioning to a tall guy behind him.
"I'll pull the flesh from your bones," I gritted out. "I'll rip your blood through your pores. I'll burn the atoms in your lungs. Let's see how you heal from that."
Though I could feel the echo of fear in Ravn's mind, he didn't show it. Instead, he smiled sweetly down at me. "But in order to do that, precious, you'll have to be awake."
"We'll see."
Blackness quickly followed the pinch in my neck.
