24: So What

After a long discussion, it was decided we'd go back to the mansion and bring the rest of Bangtan in on our plan. If they weren't interested in helping, then they wouldn't be a part of it, but Namjoon assured me that not even Seokjin, himself, would stop us.

I believed him, too, until we pulled up in front of the mansion and Jin was standing on the front steps, his hands clasped behind his back and his eyes hard and as black as iron.

For some reason, my hands were already trembling in my lap like I was just being returned home by the cops and my father was waiting for me at the door. I was a grown woman and still terrified of the man who was watching us pull in. I glanced at Namjoon in the driver's seat. He reached over and grabbed my hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.

"Don't worry about him. You've got the rest of us behind you. He's just trying to hold on to whatever control he can. He needs control like we need air."

There was a harshness to Joon's words that I'd never heard before when referring to Jin. As much as I understood it, I hated it knowing I was the cause. When the car came to a stop in the gravel, Jin stepped forward and pulled my door open. I chewed on my lip as I let him take my hand and help me out.

"So. You've returned after all."

"It appears so."

His hard stare only left mine to watch as the rest of the guys walked behind me while Namjoon stepped up to my side.

"We're doing this whether you want us to or not, Seokjin." Namjoon's voice was so low, I almost had a hard time understanding him even with him so close his arm brushed against mine.

Jin glanced to the side, a tiny smirk gracing his full lips. "Yes, you've already said that. And yet you're going to use this house to accomplish your goals and put everyone in it at risk."

"We've put just as much into this place as you have, Seokjin. And no one is being forced to come along. If they want to go with us, that's their decision. And they are all on board. You're the only one cowering in the dark."

Jin's eyes flashed hot with anger, but he schooled the rest of his features behind a blank mask. It was a look I'd seen before and wished I'd never see again. Out of all of the men, Jin's quiet anger was the most frightening.

He stepped closer to Joon, even though it meant looking up at the slightly taller man. Joon tipped his head back and grinned down at Jin in challenge, his dimples two black holes of malice in his cheeks.

"You have no idea what I've done for you and the rest. I'm not cowering. I'm being smart."

I couldn't hold my tongue any more. "Yeah, well, you're 'being smart' is going to get a good man killed."

Jin's features softened just a little. "I know what Kai means to you, but is he worth dying for?"

"Yes," I answered without hesitation.

"But we have no intention of letting her, or anyone else get killed," Namjoon interjected.

"What you intend and what happens are never the same thing, Joon. You know that as well as any of us." Silent words passed between Jin and Joon as the older looked at me briefly. He was reminding him of the mission that got me killed. The anger in Joon's eyes settled for a moment as he looked at me too. I had to say something or I was going to lose him to Jin's determination and skills of persuasion.

"I don't care if none of you go," I said with a huff. "I'm going to save Kai. Nobody is dying to keep me safe."

Joon looked at Jin as if to say 'see?' Then he turned and walked in the house, leaving me and Jin alone. I started to turn and follow him when Jin caught my arm. I looked down at his grip on me, then up to his eyes.

"I'm only thinking of your safety."

"Is that what you were doing when you left me alone for the past six months to figure all this shit out for myself?"

"If you turn and put their lives in danger, I'll put a bullet in your head."

I jerked my wrist out of his hand. "You won't need to. What you fail to realize is that if I even think that's going to happen, I'll do it myself."

Without another word, I turned and stalked into the mansion, stomping past Jimin and Jungkook. They were standing just inside the door and watched as I stormed past, neither of them daring to say anything. I started to walk up the steps to Jungkook's room where I'd stayed before.

"Stop," Jin's booming voice caught me, making me pull up short. I turned and put my hands on my hips as I waited for him to say what he was going to.

"You aren't staying with Jungkook anymore."

"Really? Afraid we'll have sex under your roof or something?"

Jin rolled his eyes and moved toward me. "Hardly." He took the steps until he was right beside me, his face in mine and so close I could tell he'd recently drank whiskey. "I just thought you'd rather go to your own room instead."

I couldn't hide my shock. "My room?"

"Yeah. I knew these idiots would bring you home at some point, so I fixed up a room for you. It may not be to your taste, but if you survive this stupid-ass rescue mission, you can do whatever you want to it."

I glanced back at Jimin and Jungkook. The youngest had the ghost of a hopeful smile on his face. My own grin was sudden and wide as I took the steps two at a time to follow behind Jin. He stopped at the last door off the hallway, beside Jungkook's room. He unlocked the door with a key and then handed it to me before swinging the door wide.

Peeking my head around the door frame, I almost gasped when I saw the room. When I looked back at Jin, he was trying to hide his own smile. I realized just how closely he'd been paying attention to me the whole time and I suddenly found it hard not to cry.

Being on the corner of the mansion, the room had two full walls of windows that overlooked the city on one side and the forest beside the mansion on the other. It was bright and airy and I would never again have to worry about feeling closed in again.

Despite still being angry with him, I threw my arms around Jin's neck. "Thank you," I whispered against his skin.

He wrapped an arm cautiously around my back and pulled me tight against his chest. "It's not much, and it's pretty plain, but I thought you at least deserved this much."

"It's perfect."

When I unwound myself from him and started to walk inside the room, Jin caught my wrist again. But this time it wasn't aggressive. His thumb moved softly across my skin.

"Despite everything, I still love you. I just wanted you to know that."

I sighed and stepped back up to him. "I know, Jin." I ran my fingertips over his jaw. "I still love you, too. But I'm also still pissed at you for abandoning me. Pretty words and new rooms don't make up for what you did."

He licked his lips and took a deep breath, releasing my wrist and straightening. "I know. If you survive this mess with Kai, we'll have plenty of time to figure the rest out."

Without another word, he left. His boots made soft sounds in the carpet and I listened until he was on the steps and heading down to the first floor before closing my door. I walked over to the king-sized bed with brand new designer bedding and threw myself back on it.

But as I looked up at the ceiling, I knew I didn't have time to be distracted with pretty words and even prettier gifts. Not when Kai was alone in a cell somewhere needing me to come save him.

Any fans of Sailor Moon out there? For some reason, this "save Kai" storyline is starting to remind me of how Serena always had to go save Tuxedo Mask from whatever dumb shit he'd got caught up in. It's one reason why I always loved Sailor Moon. She wasn't a damsel in distress. She was the hero. Endymion always sacrificed himself for her, but she loved him so much she wouldn't let him. That was the kind of love story I always wanted. Two people who would go to the ends of the Earth for the other, but neither was made lesser for loving the other. They were made stronger for it.

I don't know...it just got me in the feels.
