The Mountain
The day Red snapped I was staying over at my friend Robin's house. It was just the two of us and Blitz. Her parents and brother were gone, I don't remember where.
Robin was snooping around in her brother's room and found a movie hidden away in a box in his closet. The disk was blank, no artwork or anything, with the title 'The Mountain' hand written on the clear case in black sharpie.
We watched it in the basement, a small square room with only enough space for two couches meeting at the corner and a tiny tv shaped like a box that looked too old to function.
Blitz was the one who figured out how to get it to work.
The first hour or so was normal enough.
It was an action revenge type of thing about two brothers who swore to kill each other. A little violent but nothing we hadn't seen before.
Plus the effects were pretty old and not all that convincing-the blood was closer to pink than red. The acting wasn't really selling it either, ranging from melodramatic to robotic. It was honestly a little disappointing.
Then came the climax. It was about an hour and a half in, the brothers were finally face to face and fighting on a mountain. That's when everything changed.
One of them was pinning the other down, getting ready to deliver the final blow, when someone emerged from the bushes. Turns out the mountain they were filming on was home to a clan of sadistic cannibals.
The remaining two hours were uninterrupted torture.
Some of it was caught on camera from an angle on the ground, most of it was offscreen and all you could hear was the actors and crew screaming.
One of them was forced to eat their own eyeball, another stabbed one of the cannibals with the exposed bone of their arm as they bled out, a few were put in a pit and used to make a bonfire, their screams of agony rising with the flames.
There was no real end to the torment, the end of the movie was sudden, implying the camera had run out of battery.
When the credits finally did roll it was for the first movie about the brothers, no credits were given to the cannibals.
We all sat there in silence at first. Shaken, scared and disturbed.
Robin switched the channel to children's cartoons and when we woke up the next morning they were still playing.
That morning was the day that Red snapped.
