Laelia roamed the streets yet again. She needed to work up exhaustion to crawl back into her bed. It drove her mad to know that the universe gave her only two nights of peace before springing the dreams on her again. Strolling through the city seemed like the best cure for the moment.
Part of her had hopes to see him while out walking. She hadn't seen him in two weeks. After their small tiff at Amelia's birthday, he all but disappeared. Though she wasn't sure how she would react seeing him.
"How many times do I have to tell you it's dangerous to be out this late alone?" His smooth voice rang behind her. She glanced back and him and felt a pang of hurt. How was he being light-hearted after the last time they spoke?
"I'm not talking to you." She stated, turning her face forward.
"Why is that?" He inquired as he caught up to her slightly. He decided it was best to stay behind her.
"Because you hurt my feelings last time I saw you." She answered plainly.
"I didn't mean to hurt your feelings."
She scoffed, "Well it sure did seem like you were trying to."
"I'm sorry, Laelia."
"For what?" She spun to face him. "Hurting my feelings or just dropping off the face of the earth for two weeks?"
"Both." He smiled warmly at her. She huffed, folding her arms over her chest. "Why are you out at this hour again?" He asked and placed his hands on her cold cheeks. She gazed up at him with saddened eyes. "More bad dreams?"
She nodded, "Yeah. They were kinda scary tonight."
"So you choose to walk the city streets alone?" He chuckled. She wanted to laugh but couldn't bring herself to. She buried her face in his chest and sighed heavily. "Alright. Come on. Let's get you inside where it's warm."
"I don't want to go home. Michael will just complain that I'm not sleeping."
Leo grinned, "Never said I was taking you to your home." She looked up at him curiously, anxiety taking grip of her insides. He released her, taking a step out of her reach. "Come. You don't need another sleepless night." She followed him as he headed down the next street.
The loud beep of a car alarm deactivating startled her as she rounded the corner. She was stunned to see a sleek, black car parked just ahead of her and Leo. The car appeared to be brand new and expensive.
"Get in." Leo smiled warmly at her.
She folded her arms over her chest, "How do I know that you're not going to try to kill me if I get in there?"
"Lia, sweetheart, if that was something I wanted to do, I could've easily done it already." He chuckled. His voice held a half mocking tone, the other inflection he used, she couldn't place. It was almost as though he knew something she didn't. She eyed him for another moment, until the shiver set into her body. She wanted out of the cold. "Thank you." Leo's shoulders sagged slightly as she hurried to the passenger side door.
"Why are we here?" Laelia looked around nervously as they approached the large warehouse.
"Its where I live." Leo replied. He pressed a button on his dashboard quickly. One of the gate doors began to rise. "My family owns it. I turned a couple floors into apartments. At least I'm trying to. Only two apartments are finished so far." He explained. "I also have two floors of offices as well. I run a business from one of those floors."
"My friend Jana works at the coffee shop across the street." Laelia stated with a gentle smile. "I walk by almost every day." Leo nodded even though he showed more interest in parking than what she said. "A lot of times when I walk passed though, I get this weird sensation." She admitted. Leo glanced at her with curiosity. "Like a mix between a chill and an electric shock."
"Odd." Leo replied, still pretending to pay no mind to what she was saying. "Let's go. I can hear your teeth chattering still." A single turn of his wrist shut the car off. Laelia watched him exit the car with grace. "Come on, Laelia." He chuckled before slamming the car door. She scurried from her seat, not wanting to be left alone in the unfamiliar parking garage.
"Make yourself at home." Leo instructed. He threw his jacket onto the chair carelessly. "I'll go make you some tea. It will help you sleep." Laelia took a step toward him, hoping to follow him. "There's a blanket on the back of the sofa. Sit down and get warm." He ordered with a gentle voice. Laelia sank onto the couch without an argument. She didn't know what the night would bring with Leo.
Laelia could hear Leo clanking around in the kitchen as she leaned into the sofa. She glanced around the room curiously. It was a beautiful living space. The black and white theme suited the personality he showed her. Thin, sleek lines were created with the furniture and decor. Black and white prints hung on the walls. Small vases of red and purple hyacinth sat on the accent tables. It was simple, refined, and yet completely gorgeous.
"Here, Lia." Leo's voice brought her from her examination of the room. She looked up to see him holding a steaming mug out to her. Laelia smiled, taking the cup from his hands. "It's hot. Be careful." He informed her before taking a seat on the other end of the sofa.
"This is a beautiful apartment." Laelia stated, sipping the tea he gave her. "I like the way the bright flowers pop against the black and white of everything else."
"Thank you." He glanced back at the vases behind him with a saddened expression.
"Do you know the story behind hyacinths?" Laelia inquired shyly. Leo lifted his eyebrow at her with curiosity. "The story is that Apollo was in love with a human that other gods loved as well, but the human chose Apollo over everyone else. When Apollo was playing with his lover, one of the other gods in love with the human, Zephyrus, became jealous and adjusted the wind to mess with the discus. The discus hit the human lover in the head, wounding him fatally. Apollo created the flower with the name of his lover from his blood."
"I know the story." Leo smiled brightly.
"Anemones have a similar story, with Aphrodite and Adonis." She stated with a shy smile.
Leo leaned forward slightly, showing his interest, "How do you know these stories? They don't teach mythos like this in school."
"I don't know." Laelia shrugged nonchalantly. "I've always known the stories. I think the stories are why I like the flowers so much. Such sadness created something so beautiful. Can't imagine how Apollo felt. Story says he wished to join Hyacinth in the underworld, but obviously couldn't."
Leo dropped his eyes from hers, "Yeah."
"Sorry. My mouth got away from me." Laelia leaned back into the sofa, wanting to hide from embarrassment.
"It's alright. If it makes you tired, I'll listen to you babble." Leo teased her. Her cheeks began to heat, turning them a soft pink. "I haven't heard the stories told to me in a long time."
"Why don't you tell me a story then, something you just know." Laelia offered, wanting to get rid of the tension that crept up.
Leo dismissed her suggestion with a question, "Why do your dreams have you roaming the streets alone in the middle of the night?"
"I don't know." Laelia sighed heavily. "I just feel like I can't be cooped up after I wake up. It's... I get this flustered, restless feeling, like I need to get out."
"I'm sorry." Leo rested his temple on his fist, watching her with concerned eyes. "I just don't think it's safe for you to roam alone at this hour."
She shrugged once more, "I know, but it helps clear my head." Leo nodded, still intent on listening to her speak. "I wish I knew why I was having these dreams."
"What was is about tonight?" Leo inquired. "Come on, it might help if you tell me." Leo suggested when she appeared more than apprehensive.
"I don't remember much now, but I know it scared me." She thought for a moment, recalling all she could about her dream. "It was dark. I could hear talking not too far away. It wasn't him though. His voice makes me feel safe, like yours does."
"This voice didn't make you feel safe?" Leo questioned when her eyebrows furrowed. She shook her head quickly. "What did this voice make you feel?"
"Worried...scared. He was mad, more than mad." Laelia said, closing her eyes. She wanted the image of the room in her mind again. "I can't...I don't remember anything else." She puffed with frustration.
"Maybe it's a good thing." Leo said as worry took over his own voice. She sipped her tea with the hope it would clear her of the icky feelings coming back.
"Leo," She lifted her gaze to his. He hummed in response. "Do you think history repeats itself?" Her hands gripped the mug tighter as the question fell from her lips.
"I don't see why not." His shrug showed he was open to the idea. "Why?" He inquired, the question seeming to come out of left field.
"These dreams I've been having..." She began. He focused his eyes on her, waiting for what was about to come next. "Nevermind." She shook her head. "It sounds silly."
"Silly or not, tell me." He coaxed her with a gentle tone.
"Jana said that maybe I could be dreaming a past life, or past lives, because I've dreamed about different eras lately." Laelia confessed. "I know that it seems far fetched and just absolutely crazy, but..." She paused for a moment to gather her thoughts. "But I can't think of another explanation for what is happening. Why am I dreaming like this?" She threw her head back against the sofa in frustration.
"I've heard of weirder things." Leo chuckled. Laelia glared at him, waiting for examples. "I can't think of any right now, but I know I have heard stranger." Laelia rolled her eyes at him. "The dreams, are they nice sometimes? Are there some that make you happy?"
"Yes." Laelia smiled brightly. "I like those nights. They're the nights I stay in bed and get enough sleep. They don't happen often though."
"Tell me about them. Maybe we can set your brain to a happy place so you can sleep." Leo proposed. Laelia sat in silence for a moment, staring at his dark eyes and caring expression. She nodded slowly. "What dream did you have that made you happy?"
"The first one I had." She stated. "It was beautiful. I felt so warm and loved. I can really only remember some of it now, but I remember the way the man in my dream touched me. It was so soft, like he thought I was breakable."
"Where was it? Do you remember where you were in the dream?" Leo leaned forward, appearing more than curious.
"The edge of a cliff. There were trees near by, flowers growing not too far away. After the trees there was a hill, it lead further up the shoreline. I laid with the man in the sun and under the tree. It felt like it was the happiest we'd been." Laelia's lips turned up at the memory of the dream. "Its the dream I had the night before I met you." The smile she wore brightened at the mention of their meeting.
"Are there more you remember?" Leo asked quickly.
"Yes." Laelia beamed. "I also remember a dream of swimming in the ocean with this man. His laugh. I remember his laugh the most and the way the moonlight bounced off the water onto his skin." Laelia's skin began to heat again. "These are the dreams that make me wish they were memories of past lives. I think I was very much in love with the man I keep dreaming of."
"Isn't it weird that I remind you of him then?" Leo's tone sounded as though he were testing her.
She smirked, "Yes, considering you're trying to earn my trust so you can kill me." Leo rolled his eyes as she cackled at the joke. She was well aware of his dislike of the serial killer jokes, but his annoyed expressions only made it more fun.
