"We're losing her!" A voice screamed. If it was even possible, the bustling around the room became even more hurried as they attempted to save Charmaine before she was too far gone.

The butterfly at the window was suddenly joined by a couple dozen others. They went unnoticed by everyone except Irene. Tears stained her cheeks as she thought about the fact that this girl was going to die on her shift.

She paused to gaze at the butterflies. All of the noise filling the room faded to the background as she stared in wonder.

"Open the screen door," a voice said. Startled, Irene looked around the room to see who had said it. No one was even looking at her.

"Quickly, open it! We're running out of time!" The voice came again. This time, Irene realized that it was coming from somewhere inside her head.

She searched the screen layer of the window for a handle. After a desperate few seconds trying to force it open, she realized it didn't open at all.

"Do something! Quick!" The voice inside her head screamed.

Irene ran to the small closet and grabbed a pair of scissors. Rushing back to the window, she cut a hole in the screen. The butterflies backed off as she did so; but as soon as the screen had an opening, they all flew in.

The nurse stared as they just kept coming. They landed, one by one, on Charmaine's nearly lifeless body.

"What in the world!" Dr. McGill shouted, seeing the butterflies flying through the air.

Irene couldn't find it in her to reply. She gazed, awestruck, at the butterflies swarming around the bed right along with all of the others. All of the rushing around had stopped. The heart monitor let out a shrieking, beeeeep!

"She's gone," someone said. The spirit of energy that had been filling the room turned to sorrow as it always did when someone couldn't be saved.

"No," objected Irene, surprising even herself. Her eyes were fastened on the butterflies teeming around the body. "Wait."

The butterflies seemed to be transforming Charmaine's body.

Dr. McGill let out a gasp as she realized what was occurring. When she found her voice, she whispered, barely audible, "They're constructing a cocoon!"
