Rant.
So. I was talking to this person, a few years younger then me, who said they wanted to be a vet.
It was...interesting.
I understand that they are younger then me, but not that much younger, and I feel like maybe they need to look at the veterinary profession a little closer.
Also horses.
So, first warning sign, they mentioned animal planet. Literally a professor I've talked to said that a lot of prospective students entering a pre-vet program don't know what they are doing or what they are trying to do, and have watched too much animal planet. That raised a red flag.
Also, I get that you might want to pick a specific animal to work with(equine vet for me, although I'm now thinking more of a farm vet), but please don't single out one animal and tell me, "I can't do them." I asked why. The answer? "I've watched too much animal planet and YouTube. *giggle*"
Literally a conversation I had.
They also noted all the animals they wanted to work on and pushed aside those who don't, so I didn't mention that you have to learn about a lot of those anyways.
Oh, and yet another, they wanted to instantly study abroad at a veterinary college when they graduate. Didn't seem to understand that you also need a pre-vet.... I started to explain, don't think I got through.
Now, to the more horse-focused part. Finally, after about three or four times mentioning that I also wanted to be a vet, they asked me what I wanted to be *sigh*. I answered vet, but that if it didn't work out I was going to do something else with horses. I started talking about how I might want to work as a farrier, since I'm a terrible rider, but they cut me off, saying "Yeah, like you can totally have a job riding."(something to that effect)
They said it oddly, and I had not actually explained how I wanted to be a farrier, so I questioned what they meant.
THEY DIDN'T KNOW THAT HORSE RIDING IS A SPORT.
IN FACT, MANY SPORTS.
MY MIND WAS EXPLODING BUT I HAD TO KEEP CALM.
The only thing I could push out of my mouth was..."Of course it's a sport"(I was trying not to yell at this point), "it's in the Olympics." Yeah, that's about all I said that I thought they would get. Turns out, they don't watch the Olympics.
Probably doesn't matter though, they never seem to showcase the riding -__-
Before I was able to explain the sports, someone(or some random thing that caught their attention, I don't remember), dragged them away, and I was left wondering how they could not know. I mean, sure, I could understand some random person who doesn't like horses not knowing, but this person wants to be a vet. It just sort of burns me up inside, especially when a lot of people now a days don't know about horse sports, and I figured that they would.
Okay, I will explain that some of my raging-rant has to do with the fact that my trying to figure out the right classes to take and that my math score was only two questions off from being able to pick any science or math class that I wanted...... I just think that people need to be educated. You got to get in to the game early if you are going to attempt to become a veterinarian.

Post Script: Yes, this is a rant. Not really sorry for it, I'm sure a lot of you can relate on some level.
