Part 2: The Last Verse

Kimberly's POV

I was walking down my street when I noticed Devin creeping in through the gates of Villa de Caspel. Devin was always up to no good, and I would have left him on his own and walked past if not for the fact that I was his babysitter for the night.

I called out to him but he didn't turn back. Having no other choice, I followed him.

When I was younger I had walked through these gates several times as it was the best hiding place in a game of hide and seek; none of the other kids usually seeked in the vincity of Villa de Caspel. But even I had set my limits when it came to entering the house itself.

I heard Devins laughter and the sound of footsteps thudding on the wooden floor. So I continued inside.

The room was dark and musty. Beams of moonlight shone over the layers of dust that had settled on the uncovered furniture. Cobwebs were weaved overhead in every available crook. It was a perfect spot for a spook-house.

Once more I heard the shuffle of footsteps from upstairs.

"Devin? Where are you? It's no time for games."

I was answered with thick silence.

"Devin! Come out right now!"

Suddenly, I heard the sound of the swing creaking followed by Devins voice, "I'm over here. Come and get me!"

So I went to the yard through the side balcony door that faced the swing.

There I saw a girl sitting on the swing, slowly swaying back and forth, with her head flopped down and covered with a curtain of her hair.

"Oh Lord...it's...it's Jenny!" I gasped. And at once her head lifted, pushing back her hair. Her protruding eyes stared at me. It left me frozen with fear.

I squeezed my eyes shut and whispered prayers to the Lord. "Please make it go away...please save me...let it be a phantom of my imagination...pleas-"

My pleadings were cut short when I heard a harsh wheezing breath in front of me.

Please go away! I cried from within.

"You're afraid of me too...everyone's afraid of me...I just want to play." A sweet voice spoke.

Fear kept my eyes shut and body still.

"OPEN YOUR EYES!" The girl suddenly snarled and scratched at my throat.

My eyes instinctively opened and I started screaming, "No! NO! Stop! Please!"

"I won't hurt you." The girls voice was unbelievably sweet once again.

But that did nothing to calm my fear.

"Am I ugly? Is that why you won't look at me? Is it my scars? I know they look rather ugly...daddy didn't like it when I made noise." The girls head was downcast as she wrung her hands as if ashamed.

"I don't have friends. Do you want to be my friend?"

My mouth was shaking, unable to form words.

"SPEAK UP!" she screeched again, with her face contorting terrifyingly.

And I screamed out of shock.

"Shhh...daddy doesn't like loud noise." She spoke softly like to a child. "Do you want to be my friend?"

"Y...ye...yes." I didn't want her to hurt me. I wanted her to leave me alone.

She smiled beamingly up at me. But it didn't make her face look any better. The muscles on her face were twisted and cracked. Her eyes we barely contained in their sockets. It looked like a wet rag that had been twisted to drain the water it bore.

"Do I look ugly?" She tried to pout.

"N...no." I lied.

"What's your name?"

"Kimberly." I whispered.

"Will you push my swing?"

I was horrified but I had to comply. We spent what felt like hours with her sitting on the swing and me pushing it.

She then let me go after making me promise to return the next day.

Finally reaching home, I broke down. I told my parents about it and begged them to make us leave Caspel. I wanted nothing to do with it. I knew they didn't want to believe me, but deep down they too were afraid. I gave it no rest until my parents agreed. And we left, the very next evening, to a house owned by my grandma a few towns away.

It was night time when we reached there, and I quickly set off to choose a room for myself.

That's when I heard it...

Caspel, oh Caspel,
Is a beautiful town,
Where lays the beautiful house.

Caspel, oh Caspel,
In this beautiful house,
There once lived a beautiful girl.

Caspel, oh Caspel,
This beautiful girl,
Loved swinging in her beautiful swing.

Caspel, oh Caspel,
This beautiful swing,
Was the end of her beautiful life.

Capel, oh Caspel,
Then she met Kimberly,
And will follow her always,

"For only you were kind to me..." A raspy voice spoke right next to my ear.
