Chapter Eleven - The Enemy Of My Enemy
As the threat of Dracula loomed over the Boiling Isles, Luz and her friends made the uneasy choice of forging an alliance with Emperor Belos. As the Sun rose, Van Helsing along with Luz and her friends began making their way to the Emperor's Palace. As they approached the Palace, they were stopped by two Coven Guards.
Coven Guard: Halt! State your business!
Van Helsing: We request an audience with the Emperor. It is vital that we see him immediately.
Coven Guard: And a whole lot of people want to see the Emperor these days. Now beat it before I....
???: Let them pass.
As the voice calls out, everyone turns to see Emperor Belos approaching them. The Coven Guards knelt before Belos. Van Helsing and the others remained standing. Belos immediately cast his eyes on Van Helsing.
Belos: So you wish to have an audience with me? Very well. Your request has been granted.
With that, Belos lead Van Helsing and the others to the throne room. Everyone felt uneasy as Belos spoke to Van Helsing.
Belos: Another Human in the Boiling Isles? How intriguing.
Van Helsing: I've come here to discuss a mutual threat to both of us.
Belos: You speak of the Vampire? I am well aware of the Vampire's presence in the Boiling Isles.
Van Helsing: It is no ordinary Vampire that you face. It is an evil that is unlike anything this world has ever known. That threat's name is Dracula.
Upon hearing that name, Belos was quick to recognize that name.
Belos: Dracula....now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time.
Eda: Of course you know each other....
Belos: I would like to discuss this...Dracula with Van Helsing alone.
Luz: No way! We're not leaving him alone with you!
Van Helsing: Do not worry, Miss Noceda. I will be fine.
Left with no other choice, Luz and her friends along with Kikimora and the rest of the Coven Guards left Van Helsing alone with Belos. Once they were alone, Belos removed his mask, revealing his true face to Van Helsing.
Belos: What do you know of Dracula?
Van Helsing: I dedicated my life to hunting down and destroying Dracula.
Belos: Then you and I are cut from the same cloth. Like you, I too dedicated my life to the destruction of monsters in service to God.
Upon hearing this, Van Helsing became curious.
Belos: Allow me to introduce myself. My....true name is Philip Wittebane.
Van Helsing: Philip Wittebane....I know that name. You were one half of a pair of brothers who hunted witches in Gravesfield.
Belos: You are very well informed, Van Helsing. I cleansed the town of Gravesfield of the witch plague.
Van Helsing: "Cleanse" is hardly the word I'd use. Many of your victims were innocent of witchcraft. Miss Noceda told me of your...despotic nature.
Belos: Exaggerations I can assure you. What I do, I do in God's name.
At this point, Van Helsing could see the kind of man Belos was. Van Helsing was quick to interrupt Belos.
Van Helsing: I've encountered your type before.
Belos: And what would that be?
Van Helsing: Men who take God's name and enact their own sinister purpose. What you've done....as Philip Wittebane or Emperor Belos is an afront to God's name. And the fact that you so proudly proclaim yourself a man of God offends me. Now I've sought you out only because of the threat Dracula poses on this world.
Belos was hurt by Van Helsing's words. He had believed that Van Helsing was just like him. But in reality, he reminded him too much of his late compassionate brother Caleb.
Belos: So you wish to form an alliance?
Van Helsing: As we speak, Dracula's army grows. With each victim he feeds on, Dracula's army grows. It won't be long until Dracula's army outnumbers your own. And when that happens, Dracula will sweep the Boiling Isles like a plague.
Belos: I am more than capable of destroying this Vampire.
Van Helsing: Do not take this threat lightly. I spent my life on the study of Vampires. I know their strengths and weaknesses. And Dracula is a Vampire unlike any the world has ever seen. The only way we can destroy Dracula is if we work together.
Upon hearing this, Belos couldn't help but be intrigued. While he was disappointed that Van Helsing didn't share his vision, Belos was still intrigued by the prospect of working with him.
Belos: The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Dracula is a threat that must be purged.
Van Helsing: Agreed.
Belos: Very well. Consider this alliance forged.
Van Helsing: But make no mistake, Wittebane. While we share the same enemy, we are not friends. As I said before, Miss Noceda and Miss Clawthorne have warned me about you and I have every reason to believe them. Should you make any move against them, you will not see the next Sunrise. As God as my witness, I will send you to Hell. Good day to you, sir.
At this point, Van Helsing managed to secure an alliance with Emperor Belos. While Van Helsing didn't feel comfortable working with Belos, he knew that this alliance was the best chance they had at destroying Dracula. But what they didn't realize was that Dracula was preparing to unleash his legion of undead followers onto the Boiling Isles to fulfil their master's vision of turning the Boling Isles into an undead kingdom. For now, all they could do was wait for the night to fall.
