Chapter Two
-Dick's POV-
I woke up. The bright sunlight glared in my eyes. I moved my arm over my face, yawning. I could smell flowers and hear the rhythmic splashing of the ocean outside the window. Sitting up, I stretched my arms out and let my eyes flutter closed for a moment. Almost immediately, I was hit with a pillow.
Opening my eyes, I didn't see the culprit. I stood up. "Wow, I wonder who could've hit me," I said out loud, tip toeing around the room. I could barely hear Athena's footsteps. I listened closely and followed.
When I heard the back door creak open, I smirked. Going around the front, I cornered the attacker on the balcony. Our eyes met. I could see the determined surprise in her indigo irises. I set my jaw and cocked my head to the side in an invitational way. Athena stood in place, her feet glued to the wood. Her eyes darted to either side of me. I raised an eyebrow.
Trying to psych me out, she between my legs. I reached down and snatched her ankle. Pulling her up, I held her bridal style over the ocean below. "Drop me, coward. I'm not scared. I won't beg for my life," she said, her voice falsely serious.
"Tell me what you know and I will let you go free," I mocked back.
"I know nothing, and even if I did, I would never tell a cop like you."
I jerked her body up, landing a kiss. She wrapped her arms around my neck as I gently set her down on the edge of the wood railing. Slowly, we broke apart, breathless. "Wanna tell me who threw that pillow now?"
She leaned in and kissed my forehead. "I'll take it to the grave."
I rolled my eyes and shook my head. Letting her down, we walked inside.
After a quick shower together, Athena and I got dressed. I wore a pair of blue swim trunks and a white shirt. Athena wore her white bikini top with a pair of red shorts. We were supposed to meet the Young Justice Team for breakfast before the wedding.
Holding hands, we walked from the beach cabin we were staying in. While everyone else was staying in a hotel near the wedding venue, I had insisted we stayed somewhere more luxurious. Athena and I rarely got vacations, so I wanted the one's we did get to be special. It wasn't every day that we got to spend a whole month in Bora Bora. However, the walk from our cabin to the hotel was abut twenty minutes. And the walk to the breakfast place was even farther.
But, we walked anyway. I felt the sun beat down on my skin, tanning it gently. The constant smell of sea salt and the sound of waves comforted me as I walked. The ocean breeze kept me cool, despite the hot temperatures.
And then there was the beauty beside me. Athena constantly looked around at everything. I could see the childish curiosity lighting up her face. It was the most joyful thing I had seen. Athena rarely got to enjoy things. I knew what had happened to her and why she was the way she was.
As we walked, I continued to watch Athena. I thought back to when I had first met her. She was full of confidence, ego, and drive. She wasn't afraid of anything and she found great passion and happiness in her work. I then thought back to four years ago, when she returned from Ra's kidnapping. She was scared, sad, and broken. Then, Jason gave her back some of that passion and happiness that she had lost. Now, Athena was different from the person she was when we first met almost six years ago. She was fearful and hesitant. Yet, she was also full of life and intense eagerness that characterized her. While I knew she would never be the person I first met, I was still deeply, deeply in love with the girl I knew now.
Catching me staring, Athena turned her gorgeous head to me. Her ponytail whipped the side, her blond highlights catching the sunlight. Her tanned body faced me. Her pink lips stood out against her darkened skin, slightly open. Her bright blue eyes met mine with a confused stare.
"I love you," I stated honestly. A rose blush consumed her cheeks as an adorable smile bubbled up.
"Shut up, Boy Blunder," Athena teased, rolling her eyes. Although I knew it was very hard for her to say it back, Athena's perfect smile was enough for me. Her smile confirmed her feelings for me. I felt like I was floating.
Eventually, we made our way to the restaurant. It was on a hill that overlooked the beach. Athena and I raced up.
"Over here!" The unmistakable voice of M'gann drew my attention. In the corner directly next to the window, my favorite people all gathered.
Mal and Karen were sitting beside each other, whispering and laughing intimately. Zatanna, Raquel, and La'gaan were all talking in a friendly manner. Garfield, Bart, Virgil, and Jaime were all playing a dumb card game at the table. Kaldur and Cassie were discussing something in great detail. Donna and Roy were teasing each other. Barbara, who had brought Luke as a plus one, was giggling beside him. Connor held M'gann's hand and added to Kaldur's conversation. Tim, who had brought Stephanie as his plus one, showed her pictures on his phone. Suspiciously, Wally and Artemis hadn't arrived yet.
Athena and I took two empty seats. I sat beside Tim and she sat beside Kaldur. She turned to Kaldur and they instantly hit it off. I grasped Tim on the shoulder and leaned in. "If you and Steph ever need anything, you know where I'm staying," I whispered with a smirk, receiving a smack from Tim.
"Dick, I swear I will do worse if you keep trying to give me 'advice'," Tim said, flashing me a glare. I chuckled. Now that he was officially seventeen, Tim was no longer accepting my relationship advice. Stephanie giggled along with me.
"Oh, lighten up, Timmy. I might want to hear it," she winked at me.
"Trust me," Tim said, "you don't want to hear anything Dick Grayson has to say."
"Hey, I'm your brother!" I gasped, faking a frown.
"I can't choose my family, but damn, sometimes I wish Bruce would've picked up a less annoying orphan the first time," Tim joked, sticking his tongue out at me. I mimicked him. Beside him, Steph was laughing so hard, tears were trickling out of the corners of her eyes.
Athena turned around. "Can you two Bat boys keep it down? We're discussing Atlantean politics," she said, her face stern.
I tried to stop my laughter. Kissing her on the cheek, I said, "yes mother. We'll keep it down."
"Good. The adults are talking." She turned back to Kaldur, her focus zoning in on him. From over her shoulder, I saw a tiny, sad smile cross Cassie's face as her eyes darted across Tim's face. I gave her knowing nod and she grinned happily. The two had broken up about eight months ago. I thought that Cassie had moved on as Tim had, but I could tell she was still a little hurt.
Eventually, Wally and Artemis walked in. They were stiff around each other and it was obvious. Artemis wore a somber frown and Wally's joyful grin was absent. However, when they approached our roaring table, both smiled softly.
"Why am I not surprised you two are late?" Roy said, raising an eyebrow. The table laughed.
"Yeah, sorry about that," Wally answered. Artemis flashed Roy a glare.
"We had to deal with last minute wedding complications," Artemis groaned. Athena and I scooted out chairs to make room beside us.
"What went wrong?" Athena asked, turning towards Artemis.
Wally spoke, "My uncle didn't want to sit next to my great aunt--"
"And the florist got the wrong colored flowers--"
"And the caterers are going to be late with the cake--"
"And the piano player--"
"Alright, calm down you guys," Athena said, patting Artemis's shoulder, "this is breakfast, not therapy. Forget all that stuff. Everything will be alright."
The rest of the table agreed, mumbling out little positive cliches. Artemis and Wally both sighed, grabbing each other's hand instinctively. "Now," Athena spoke again, "where are those damn mimosas!?" The whole table laughed.
~~~~~~~~Hopefully that wait wasn't too long? Anyway, I know this timeline is going to be pretty messed up age wise, but I just wanted to establish the main character's ages. Dick is 23 and Athena is 22 at the moment, with Tim being 17 and Jason being 21. Bruce is 33. Athena met Dick when she was 17, about to turn 18, and Dick met her when he was 18, which was about six years ago. Then they were together for a year before she left. She returned almost two years later for Lost Stars. The events in Lost Stars lasted for a year. This book takes place two years after the events of Lost Stars. The Fallen Angel (WHICH YOU GUYS SHOULD ALL GO CHECK OUT) takes place directly after the events of Red War. Just FYI~~~~~~~
