9. Time for practice
It was later in the day, the sun had started to set, casting long shadows on the floor and walls of [y/n]'s room. [Y/n] saw on the floor with her back turned towards the open windows of her room. From her spot on the floor the sun was able to cast such a long shadow that it reached the wall across from her. She had been trying to move the shadow for some time now but had yet to see some results.
The way that Gandalf had talked about her magic had made it seem so easy. 'Just imagine the shadow moving and it would work,' [y/n] thought sarcastically to herself. She wasn't trying to do something extravagant, like completely shaping her shadow into something different, she just wanted it to wave at her without her actually moving a muscle. It seemed like it would have been one of the easier things to do.
Her eyes were still glued to the wall, never wavering from the faceless silhouette. Even if it took a while, she had never been the one to easily give up on things. And luckily so, moments later she jumped up, scared for her life, the shadow had started waving at her.
Even if this had been the thing she had been trying to do for a while, it still scared her to her core when it happened. But when she had jumped up, and was now standing, her shadow still showed her in a sitting position. The girl took a deep breath and closed her eyes for a second, all in the hope to calm her beating heart. When she opened her eyes back open again her shadow was in the same position as her.
She wanted to see if she had actual control of her powers, and that whatever had happened before didn't happen by accident. She moved her arm up and down, while doing so she focussed on the shadow to stay the same. Much to her surprise, the shadow didn't move at all. [Y/n] found that once she had started to move the shadow it was easier to do than when she had first tried it.
Apparently, shadows have the same characteristics as their owners.
Hence why it took forever to make the first movement, [y/n] has never been the one that liked being told what to do. She rather learned from her mistakes than blindly follow the orders of someone.
Her shadow had refused to work with her because it was just as stubborn as her. But once it saw that she wouldn't give up and that she was determined to make the magic work it decided to play nice. Nothing good was going to come from not working along. Besides now that [y/n] had allowed it to move more freely it wouldn't always be stuck by her side. Of course, it would only be allowed to move when [y/n] told it to, but it was still better than always being stuck mimicking somebody else's movements.
[Y/n] felt bad for referring to her shadow as just that, a 'shadow'. Now that she started to understand her magic a bit more she felt like her shadow had a personality of its own. It wasn't just a shadow, it was another being, something she now had a stronger bond with and she thought it would be polite to call it by its name, but it didn't seem to have any.
It took some time but [y/n] ended up settling on the name 'Dae'. Not seeing any protests coming from Dae themself [y/n] was happy to see that they liked the name. [Y/n] started to feel slightly like Peter Pan with her moving shadow, though she was pretty sure she wouldn't be able to fly like him.
[Y/n] and Dae kept practicing till the sun was completely gone and the moon started to rise. Thanking Dae for their cooperation [y/n] exited her bedroom and went on for a night walk, wanting to see more of the elven city at nighttime.
While the day had been filled with the warmth of the sun the night had a cool touch to it. It wasn't uncomfortable and [y/n] seemed to quite enjoy it, the soft breeze gently touching her skin. She didn't really have a plan as to where she was going, she just let her legs carry her where ever, she was too occupied with the city at night time.
The light buildings looked darker in the less bright light and the yellow fires used for lights gave them a nice welcoming hue. It was mostly quiet as it had been rather late in the evening but she could hear the joy-filled waves of laughter coming from the dwarves from miles away. They had been given a massive room to share and it seemed like they enjoyed themselves just fine.
[Y/n] had been sitting on one of the long and high paths, close to a small waterfall, looking up at the stars, when she felt a presence joining her. Looking to her right she saw Grandalf smiling back at her, his legs also dangling off the edge. It seemed that the love for late-night walks was in the family.
''Evening,'' she greeted him, to which he replied with the same. ''How have you been?'' Gandalf had felt the girl's uneasiness when he first told her about her magic, and had been worried about her ever since. Magic wasn't something to be taken lightly.
''I have been practicing,'' [y/n] told him with a big smile, she had been rather proud of herself. Gandalf seemed to approve of it and that gave her more confidence. ''I also spend some time with both Rainor and Kíli,'' the smile stayed on her face as she thinks back to the great fun that the three of them had, ''That was nice.''
Gandalf saw the look on the girl's face when she remembered what she had done today, it was one filled with love and admiration. Gandalf thought it was because she was falling in love with the dwarven prince too, he had seen the way that the archer looked at his great-granddaughter after all, but that wasn't the case.
After having her friends nearly eaten by trolls, and all of them having to run away and fight against orcs it felt really nice to do something relaxing, like a friendly competition between friends. She had fallen in love with the idea of spending downtime like that again.
''Master Kíli seems rather fond of you,'' he hinted at the girl. He knew that [y/n] had to go back to Earth at some point, but that didn't mean she couldn't have fun while she was here. [Y/n] saw the playfulness in his eyes and decided to change the subject.
''You going to tell me what 'Courtship' means yet?''
Gandalf thought it was rather entertaining that [y/n] wasn't familiar with their way of speaking, and he wasn't quite ready yet to put an end to that fun. ''You'll figure it out at some point,'' the wizard spoke without really answering the question. [Y/n] let out a quiet laugh, she could now see the blatant similarities between them.
[Y/n] had a neck for answering questions in such a way that nobody really knew if she had answered the question yes or no, and thought it was quite hilarious that she and Gandalf had that in common.
''Child, can you promise me something?'' Gandalf's question put a stop to her laughing fit. He sounded so serious, all previous playfulness nowhere to be found. ''Depends,'' the girl had gotten wary of his sudden mood change. ''If I ever get separated from the group,'' [y/n] desperately wanted to interject but Gandalf wouldn't let her, ''Promise me you will stick with the dwarves?''
What an odd request. Surely he knew that she would go and try to get him back. He was her family after all, she couldn't just leave him behind. ''But-,'' it was no use, Gandalf didn't want to listen to her, she could see it in his face. ''Promise me?'' he asked again when [y/n] stayed quiet.
She didn't want to promise it, she wanted to make sure that he would have been safe and sound. She was aware that he is basically an immortal wizard that had more knowledge about things than he let on, but it was in her nature to care about the ones she loved.
And for those reasons, she agreed to the request in the end.
The way that he had been looking at her, that look that told her to trust him and that he would be fine, had made her change her mind. She wasn't happy with it and she was sure to let him know that as well. ''You better don't do anything stupid,'' she threatened him but he only laughed at her, ''Have I ever done something stupid?''
''Yes, all the time.''

''And why exactly are we not allowed to go in?'' the company of Thorin Oakenshield had been told to wait outside the dining hall, and they did not agree. It was the next's day's lunch and they wanted to fill their bellies.
''You don't want to spoiler the surprise do you?'' Lord Elrond's voice came from behind them, causing all of them to turn around. ''What is the meaning of this?'' Thorin had enough of waiting and didn't like the game that the elf was playing in the slightest. ''See for yourself,'' Lord Elrond gave the guards at the door a nod, telling them to open the doors.
The grumpy dwarves were quickly surprised when they saw the sight behind the doors. There stood three tables where previously stood one long one. The first one was circular and held 4 chairs, but that wasn't the one that stood out, it had been the other two.
One by one the dwarves dripped into the dining hall and slowly walked over towards the 2 dwarf-sized tables. They brushed their fingers against it, not really believing their own eyes. ''You did this?'' Dwalin was skeptical of the elf's intentions.
''[Y/n] asked me for it yesterday. And I thought I would be a terrible host if I did not give my guests a spot to sit on that would fit them,'' all eyes were quickly moved from the elf to the human girl who stood shyly behind him.
''I saw your legs dangle off the chairs yesterday and thought you might want to sit on something more comfortable for you. So I asked Elrond if it was possible to have something made and he was more than happy to agree. He needed my help in order to get the sizing right, which I doubt I did correctly,'' this had been the reason why Lord Elrond had send Lindir to get the girl. [Y/n] had a keen eye for details and Elrond didn't want to mess the surprise up. But [y/n] was no dwarf nor hobbit and hadn't been too sure of her guessing abilities, she was eager for her friends to test out the pieces.
The dwarves and hobbit were in disbelieve, had their las bent over backward for them to have something custom made? And she managed the drag the elf along with her, truly a miracle. Most of them were still doubting if they were dreaming while there were few dwarves who seemed eager to test the craftmanship.
Bofur, Bifur and Balin sat down and were even more surprised with the comfort level of the newly made table set. ''Wow,'' was the only word Balin was able to muster. ''You really outdone yourself Las,'' Bofur complimented [y/n], Bifur was quickly nodding his head up and down behind him, he couldn't agree more.
[Y/n] turned shy at the praise and started rubbing her arm out of habit. ''Glad it is to your liking,'' the company wasn't used to seeing her this way. They had only seen her like this when Gandalf had asked who was willing to cuddle with her during night times.
...It looked odd on her.
Lunch went great, everybody was happy with their new arrangements. Yet another day without a food fight, so far that is, which made Lord Elrond even happier. [Y/n] had planned on reading the rest of her books but changed her plans when she saw Dwalin walking by.
[Y/n] still felt like he didn't want her around but she wanted to be able to defend herself and the people she cared for. And if she had to believe Bombur, Dwalin wouldn't disagree to show her some war hammer techniques. And the relation between her and the dwarf wouldn't improve on its own unless she put some effort into it. Mentally cursing at herself she picked up her walking speed and made her way over towards the bald lumberjack.
''Hey Dwalin, wait up!'' the super casual addressing of him made the dwarf slightly bewildered. Other than his brother and Thorin there wasn't really anybody who just called him by his name. Even the young princes of Durin addressed him as 'Master Dwalin'. And because of this he turned even more confused as the one and only las came into his view.
''Would you mind teaching me how to use the war hammer?'' [y/n] asked him quickly before she lost her courage. She pointed behind her with one hand towards the door that guarded her bedroom against the rest of Rivendell. She was breathing loudly, not because she had just sprint a huge distance (he hadn't been that far from her when she called out) but because she was absolutely terrified by the possible answer.
She hadn't really cared for anybody's opinion of her before. As long as she loved herself for who she was, the rest of the world could go and do one. But it would be an immense help if the two of them would be able to get along. The quest was far from over and they would have to spend lots of time together. Might as well enjoy somebody's presence if you are forced to hang out with them.
And the added practice of wielding a war hammer was a bonus.
Who was to say that the relation between the girl and the future king wouldn't improve after this either. If she would be able to befriend Dwalin she could attempt Thorin as well. Dwalin might even go as far as to help her in that aspect.
Dwalin didn't know how to react, he wasn't sure if he had heard the las correctly. First, she organized for the elves to make them a better sitting spot and now she was interested in combat, what was she getting up to?
[Y/n] saw the doubt on his face and started rambling, ''Look I have been told that you are one of the greatest warriors that your people have to offer, and I don't want to be useless in battle. And let's be honest, even if we don't want to admit it, we have been attacked by trolls already. And let's not forget the orcs that are hunting the party. I don't want to be dead weight.''
Dwalin got astonished by the las' confession. She had seemed rather capable of defending herself when it came down to it. If he recalled correctly she had killed quite a few orcs when they got surrounded by them. And not to mention she helped that blasted hobbit keep the trolls at bay while they waited for the sun to rise.
''Grab the hammer,'' a massive wave of relief came over [y/n] at these words. She truly hoped for this to be the start of their potential friendship. ''Kíli told us about the archery competition. I'll wait for you on that grass field,'' and without speaking another word he started walking off again.
[Y/n] was so happy with what she had been able to accomplish that she jumped into the air and fist-pumped it. Today was going to be great!
~~~
Today is the worst.
After she had gotten the war hammer and joined Dwalin on the field, he had been telling and showing her different stances, but no fighting. [Y/n] knew from movies and personal experience that when one needs to learn how to fight that they couldn't go straight to fighting techniques, yes she knew this before she asked the dwarf to help her out, but it still sucked.
The whole reason why she told Thorin all those days ago that she was able to defend herself with her fists was that she had taken some kickboxing lessons. It had been a while for sure, but she knew how to ground herself, and how to look for weak spots in your opponent.
''Not trying to be rude,'' she spoke up when he started correcting her stance for what felt like the 100th time. ''But could you please start teaching me how to actually use the hammer?'' Dwalin angrily rolled his eyes at the girl, ''You can't 'old your stance, and the way you are 'olding it right now is sloppy 'n all over the place. Unless you can 'old it correctly there is no use in teaching.''
[Y/n] got mad and dropped the stance completely. She let gravity take the heavy end of her weapon and move it towards the floor, though she made sure not to let it clash with each other. She gently placed the heavy end on the floor and held the handle with both hands while glaring at Dwalin, who was holding an even angrier glare than herself because she messed up the stance again.
''I know how to fight,'' [y/n] defended herself. She wasn't a baby that couldn't even hold up its own head. ''I need you to tell me how to use the war hammer,'' [y/n] whining started to get the better of Dwalin and he snapped at her, ''I'm not saying you don't know how to fight! I'm saying I can't teach you how to fight with a weapon if you don't understand the basics!''
[Y/n] knew that he had a point, he had been right all along, but her anger wouldn't subside just yet. It didn't help either that some of the other dwarves were yelling 'Fight! Fight! Fight!' from the sidelines.
Oh yeah, didn't I tell you? The rest of the dwarves had made it their personal mission to see how the training would go. Some thought it would be great amusement while others had been more concerned for [y/n]'s well-being, seeing as the two didn't go along and they would have been holding weapons.
''I KNOW!'' [y/n] yelled in defeat, she didn't like being treated as a small child. She was more than capable to stand up for herself. She was ready to use a weapon, why wouldn't he just see that. Though what she did next she didn't think about, her muscles had acted on their own without her input, and she would lie if it didn't terrify her a bit.
She had lifted the war hammer high above her head and was bringing it down towards Dwalin with all her might. Even when she realized what was going on and wanting to stop it, the speed and power were too mighty, she wouldn't be able to stop it on time. Fortunately, Dwalin had been around plenty of dwarves with bad tempers and is a warrior himself so he easily stepped out of the way from the incoming blow that could've killed him.
The dwarves on the sidelines had wide-open eyes, they had not seen it coming. Sure the two of them had been arguing lots over the days (not as much as the girl and Thorin though) but to actually see the las attack Dwalin like that, nobody would have thought of that.
[Y/n] was breathing loudly while refusing to break eye contact with the patch of broken grass ground, her heart pounding loudly in her ears. She felt utter shock, she had never meant to hurt Dwalin in any kind of way and that could've killed him. She was disgusted with herself.
''Alright, let's see what you got then,'' Dwalin cracked his knuckles and prepared himself for the fight. He knew that there was only one way to get the anger out of a dwarrowdams body, and that was to let it go all out. He didn't know if that is how humans worked but now he was eager to see what the las was actually capable of.
All shock and horror were quickly forgotten about when the absolute rage from deep within took over upon hearing those words. [Y/n] went blind with rage and tried hitting Dwalin with a powerful punch, the war hammer laying forgotten on the ground.
Dwalin sidestepped again, and when he saw the girl stumble slightly, he gave her a slight push making her fall on the ground. She had put too much power behind the punch, and that in combination with the fact that she needed to aim lower than what she was used to, making her stumble. And yes it had been an unnecessary dick move, but Dwalin was trying to get all the anger out of her system.
The dwarves were looking at the fight that was developing itself in slight horror. Never had they ever imagined that the practice would go this way. Dwalin looked nearly professional and level-headed as he let [y/n] try and get a hit on him, while she was absolutely overcome with untameable rage.
This could not end well.
Picking herself off the ground as quickly as she could [y/n] was back in a fighting stance. [Y/n] glared daggers at the dwarf who was supporting a cocky smirk. She might have made some mistakes but she wouldn't let him win just so easily.
Dwalin only wanted to dodge her attacks, that way he could observe her fighting style, but when she just stood there waiting for him to attack he had no other choice. [Y/n] had been learned to protect her face and upper body and because of this, and Dwalin's smaller statue, her lower body was mostly undefended.
He tried to lay a right hook punch on her thigh but [y/n] had seen this and stepped closer and put the opposite knee in his face instead. Dwalin took a couple of steps back and grabbed his nose, the hit had made his eyes water and turn his vision blurry. Quickly wiping away the tears he glares at the tall las, two could play dirty.
[Y/n] was going to use her legs to kick Dwalin off his balance but was met with a sharp pain in her abdomen, knocking her to the floor while she clutched her stomach in agony. Dwalin had punched her in the liver, and his plate mail gauntlets dealt more damage than necessary. Not thinking that the las was getting up any time soon he walked closer to her. He leaned slightly over her head, into her vision, with crossed arms, ''Are we done now?''
But [y/n] wasn't ready yet to give up. She was laying on her back after the painful punch. And from how close Dwalin was to her, so he leaned over to get himself in her vision, she knew just what to do. She latched her dominant hand on one of his ankles and pulled his leg out from underneath him, causing him to fall backward.
She was fast the get herself up from the ground, her abdomen still hurt but she bit through the pain in order to stay focused. She didn't stand till her full glory but opped to stay on her knees instead. One of her legs was bent so her foot stood on the floor but her knee was almost at a 90-degree angle, the other knee was on the ground.
[[Sorry for the crappy description, I couldn't find a picture with what I meant. I hope you get what I mean.]]
Dwalin was going for another punch after he had picked himself off the ground in a standing position. [Y/n] was prepared for it this time and grabbed his wrist firmly. She pulled him closer towards herself and then forced his arm behind his back in a painful manner. Placing her other hand forcefully on his shoulder she pushed him down to a kneeling position.
Dwalin winced and groaned in discomfort. He couldn't move without making it more painful for himself. There was no way for him to get out of the situation this time. [Y/n]'s anger subsided and her grip loosened slightly. ''I'm done now,'' completely removing her hands from the dwarf she stood back and came to her full height.
''Sorry for losing control,'' she was quick to apologize. She had been in the wrong and she knew it before she started the fight. She didn't have an explanation as to why she had lost control of her temper but that didn't matter now. The fight had happened and she wouldn't be able to change the past.
''I understand if you don't want to teach me anymore,'' the dwarves on the sidelines were holding their breath. They hadn't seen the fight ending in that way. Dwalin stood in front of the girl, one hand holding his shoulder while his arm was moving in circles to make sure everything was still in the place it should be. ''Don't apologize Las,'' his voice was still rough but didn't sound nearly as grumpy as [y/n] had expected.
''You did step out of line, but you defended yourself just fine. You made some mistakes but you are still learning,'' [y/n] couldn't believe her ears, and neither could the folks on the sidelines. Dwalin was still willing to train her after all of this. ''But no 'ore disobeying, otherwise, ye are on yer own,'' the girl straightened up even more and saluted to dwarf, ''Sir, yes Sir!''
They had a couple of hours left before dinner would be served and they spend every minute training. It was mainly stances still and theoretical stuff, but Dwalin was nice enough to add some actual fighting in the later parts of training. The other dwarves had long left by that time, they had booked it when they deemed the training session to no longer be entertaining.
The two of them enter the dining hall laughing happily. ''You should've been 'ere. It took 'im weeks to grow it back to its former length, and even 'en it wasn't as long,'' Dwalin was telling the story of how Thorin once lost his beard while babysitting Fíli and Kíli.
''I would've loved to see that happen,'' [y/n] managed to say between her laughter. The story seemed funny enough already, but if it was funnier in real life then she would've died laughing. Apparently, Fíli and Kíli had been able to shave/rip out pieces of Thorin's beard when he had fallen asleep while watching them for their mother, Dís.
Besides [y/n] wouldn't pass up on an opportunity to see Fíli and Kíli as small dwarven rascals.
The day hadn't stopped surprising the company just yet. ''I thought they would never befriend each other,'' Oin muttered annoyed as he handed Balin a small pouch that contained some coins. ''It's not fair, they were practically at each other's throats today. And now they are laughing like nothing ever happened!'' Nori agreed while handing a similar pouch to Bombur.
''She never stops to amaze me,'' Bofur said before taking a small sip of his pipe. The brothers gave each other a look, agreeing with Bofur without speaking a word. Thorin was standing in the background but also noticed how much had changed between his best friend and the human girl over the span of a couple of hours. She did seem to bring the best of out them, most of the time that is.
After a couple of minutes, every dwarf had a big tankard with Ale in it in their hands. [Y/n] looked curiously at her friends as they downed the liquid like there was no tomorrow. She knew what they were drinking, she had heard of it before, but she wanted to know what it tasted like. ''What's wrong Las? You look like you never have seen Ale before,'' Gloin noticed her staring.
''Technically,'' she muttered to herself, nobody else picked up on the sound. ''Just never tried it before,'' this one was loud and clear and put all the attention back on her. It felt like [y/n] was never out of the spot of attention for very long. ''You ne'er had Ale before?'' Oin asked in a questioning tone.
''It's not that popular where I'm from,'' [y/n] felt the need to defend herself. Not long after those words left her mouth she was handed a tankard of her own. Feeling all eyes on her the Earthling looked between the liquid and her companions with an unsure glance. ''Just don't drink it too fast,'' Gandalf advised her. He had meant well but the words sparked something else in the girl's body.
''Is that a challenge I hear?''
There were a few who didn't see this going well and then there was the rest who started chanting ''Chug chug chug,'' in encouragement. [Y/n] had suspected the drink to be bitter and had mentally prepared herself for it. But when she put the tankard to her lips and started drinking she was met with a fruity and sweet taste.
She was quick to down the dark liquid and managed to keep it from spilling down her face, unlike some of her comrades. Most dwarves were still happily chanting till she slammed the now empty tankard back down on the table, a little foam mustache covering her top lip. The dwarves started cheering loudly for her victory.
[Y/n] wiped off the foam-stache with her thumb and gave Gandalf a cheeky smirk paired with a quick wink. Both Gandalf and Lord Elrond pinched the bridge of their noses and closed their eyes, the girl could just be unruly as the dwarves when it came down to it.
Having enough of Gandalf's and Lord Elrond's party pooper behavior [y/n] excused herself from the table, before sitting on the floor at the head of one of the dwarf-sized tables. She liked the fruity flavour of the ale more than she guessed she would and got herself another one.
The rest of dinner was filled with loud laughter and tankard after tankard filled with ale. [Y/n] had one of the best nights in her life and wished it never came to an end. But all good things have to at some point.
Fortunately for our favourite bunch of idiots, that time was not quite yet there.
[Y/n] was looking down the empty tankard in her hand with a slight pout. The group had run out of ale a while ago and she had started to feel its effects. Her cheeks felt warm and her head spun slightly. She wasn't as big as an alcoholic as some of her friends were but she had always been good with holding her liquor. Knowing this she didn't pay attention to her body reacting to the alcohol. She knew she would be fine.
''Sad that there isn't more?'' Fíli's teasing voice reached her ears. ''I don't know why but I got the urge to play beer pong,'' [y/n]'s eyes made their way over to Fíli's blue ones as he had sat down in the empty spot next to her, there had been a stool but the girl still choice to sit on the ground. ''Beer pong?'' Fíli looks confused and intrigued at the same time. What was the las going on about now?
Now it could have been anything, maybe the alcohol in her system, or the sudden unexplainable need to play beer pong, but [y/n] didn't really care that she slipped up. ''I'll show you,'' [y/n] stood up and cleared the table of anything but the empty tankards.
On both heads of the table, she placed the tankards in a triangle. ''Gandalf,'' she spun around and faced the wizard, ''I need you to magic a ping pong ball.'' Gandalf looked at the girl like she had just grown a second head. Not having any of his bullshit [y/n] stood her point, ''Grandalf we have played ping pong before. Just because you are not ready to accept that an eight-year-old beat you in a game, does not mean it didn't happen. Now the ping pong ball please.''
Not the rest of the company looked at the girl strangely too. What was going on?
It took a while and lots of glaring but in the end Gandalf waved his hand and a handful of small white plastic balls appeared in [y/n]'s awaiting hands. Smiling brightly, and making a little bow as to say thank you to Gandalf, she walked back towards the table. After asking some of the dwarves to fill the tankards with beer they all gathered around the table.
The ale had all been drunk for that night but there was still beer and wine and other alcoholic beverages. [Y/n] explained the rules and the dwarves got the rules quickly. Bilbo didn't want to play at first, seeing as the dwarves were rowdy enough without being drunk, but Thorin told him to stay. The two males ended up on a team together and were playing against Fíli and [y/n]. The human girl was forced to sit on her knees while playing as to make it fairer.
She didn't complain once, as long as she was able to play something fun with her friends she would be fine. Bilbo still looked unsure and kept glancing between the set-up table and the soon-to-be king next to him. [Y/n] saw this and gave him a thumbs-up, trying to reassure him. Gandalf thought that the girl had had enough to drink already, considering her more reckless behavior, but was too curious to see how this would turn out to stop them.
After some encouraging words from himself, and the warm touch of Thorin's hand on his shoulder, Bilbo kicked off the game.
