Chapter 41
"They're not gonna magically appear, Lizzie," Josie sighed. She tried to keep the snappiness out of her voice, but Lizzie was looking for something that wasn't there. Wherever her meds were, they were long gone. They weren't just gonna appear on the counter because she looked there for the eleventh time in the last two minutes.
"I'm just making sure."
And she did make sure. She looked high and low for the next half hour. There weren't any places that she and Josie and MG and Alaric hadn't already checked multiple times, but she gave it a fair chance nonetheless. Finally, she collapsed on the couch.
"I'm exhausted."
"Yeah, probably from staying up so late," Josie retorted.
"I didn't stay up late. I actually fell asleep pretty fast."
Josie shook her head. "You kept getting up and waking me up."
"No, I didn't."
"All night long, Lizzie."
"I didn't even get up to use the bathroom once." Lizzie was adamant.
"So, what? You're sleepwalking then?"
Lizzie shook her head, rubbing at her temples. "I'm not sleepwalking."
"I heard you get up -"
"Let's just get back to Hope's before MG gets his tighty-whities in a bunch, okay?"
Josie threw her hands down. "Fine. That's what I wanted the whole time."
Lizzie hated tense silence, and she hated it most of all with her twin. The car ride back to Hope's was torturous. She just kept silently going over her mental checklist of things she needed to grab. She felt like she was forgetting something.
She tried to shake the feeling. That part of her brain probably just didn't get the memo that her meds were missing. That had to be what she was forgetting. What else would she be forgetting?
She was saved from the deep rut her brain was digging, going back and forth in circles, by her phone ringing.
"Hope?" Lizzie held the phone tight enough to turn her knuckles white.
"Are you guys on your way back yet?" Hope asked. There was something wrong in her voice.
Lizzie's heart pounded. She could only imagine all the awful things Hope could say in a moment. Something's happened to Landon. Something's happened to MG. Something's happened to me. Something will happen to you. Something will happen to Josie. Lizzie forced the thoughts out of her head. Hope hadn't even said anything yet, because Lizzie hadn't answered her yet.
"Yeah, we're on our way back." She held her breath.
"Okay." Hope sounded a little relieved. "Just get here as fast as you can."
"Why? What happened?" Lizzie knew there was something wrong. Why wouldn't Hope just say it?
"Nothing you need to worry about yet."
Hope hung up just as quickly as she said that.
"What was that about?" Josie asked, taking her eyes off the road for a second. "What happened?"
"She didn't say." Lizzie shook her head. "Just that we should get there quickly."
"I'm trying."
