00.) Prologue
Korkie Kryze was the son of Satine Kryze, but since he could talk, he was told that Bo-Katan was to be his mother. At the time, Korkie didn't understand why. He was protected from the horrors of war throughout his younger years. That is, until he had was kidnapped by Death Watch and rescued by unlikely stranger. Korki'es life had changed forever. But for now, he is but a child, happily ignorant of the war being waged across the galaxy.
"You should never have gotten involved with that Jedi!" Bo-Katan hissed at her sister, who was sitting on her throne. "What are you going to tell Korkie when he is of age?" The redheaded Mandalorian glared up at her sister. "You can't possibly think you can cover this up. If it gets out, you are in even more danger." She held her helmet at her side.
"Obi-Wan is not here anymore. You know he was sent back to the Jedi," Satine glared down at Bo-Katan. "Sister, please listen to me. I have a plan. If you agree, Korkie will be known as your son and my nephew. You shall tell him his father perished in an attack." Satine sent her sister a pleading look. "I want to do what is best for our people and my son. Sister, this is all I ask of you. Please, help me do this."
Bo-Katan sighed, shaking her head. "Fine, I will help you cover this up. However, you must be prepared for when it eventually comes into the light. When it does, I will not help you." The Mandalorian put on her helmet. "Be careful what you wish for, sister. I shall take the boy with me."
"No, not yet," Satine called out. "I want just a few more rotations with him. You can have him once he is able to walk." She hoped her sister would agree with her terms. Her blue eyes stared at her sister.
"Of course, Duchess," Bo-Katan said with venom. "I will come for him when he is able to walk." She activated her jetpack. "All I ask in return is that you stay safe. I won't be here to protect you all the time, and neither will that Jedi."
"His name is Obi-Wan," Satine shot back as her sister flew out of the room and back to her camp with Death Watch. Alone in the throne room, Satine allowed herself to cry. She didn't want to give Korkie up, and she didn't want him raised to fight. Millions of species have lost something to the Jedi's wars. Satine wanted to make sure Korkie wasn't lost to another war. She didn't think she would be able to handle it.
Bo-Katan thought what her sister was doing was insane, yet she understood where Satine was coming from. Bo wanted to be angry at Obi-Wan, but she had seen firsthand how happy he made Satine. There had been a strong bond between the two, but Bo couldn't help but wonder if the bond would hold up during the war. "You had better be sure you are making the right decision, sister," Bo muttered as she flew through the skies of Mandalore. "Life is about to get harder."
Satine and Bo-Katan stayed together and helped Korkie grow over the next few weeks. Bo saw the love in Satine's sapphire eyes as she looked at the baby in her arms. It was then that Bo knew how hard this whole situation was for her sister. When Bo first held Korkie she understood what her sister felt. Korkie was so small in her arms, and his blue eyes stared up at her, a smile on his face, and giggling. She felt the protectiveness of a mother well up inside of her.
"I'll help you protect him." Bo-Katan found herself telling Satine. "When he is old enough, I want him enrolled at the academy. If he isn't, I will train him myself." She stared at Satine, who clenched her jaw.
"I don't want him raised to fight. Violence is not always the answer," Satine replied. Bo knew her sister had a strong stand against violence.
"Then train him in self-defense and that violence is not always the answer." Bo narrowed her eyes. "Although it may make him weak."
"He will be a strong leader," Satine narrowed her eyes. "I will allow self-defense. After that, I will enroll him into the academy to be a strategic leader. He may even take my place in the Senate when he is older enough." The Duchess sighed. "However, let us not focus on the future right now. I want to enjoy the time I have with my son."
Korkie was two when he was taken by Bo-Katan. It was then that he learned Bo-Katan was his mother and Satin was his aunt. He was four when he was allowed to see Satine again. Korkie was five when he realized he was different. It was on a day he was visiting Satine with Bo-Katan. He was drawing in the throne room while Satine and Bo-Katan were talking on the other side of the room. Korkie didn't hear what was said, but he shuddered. He could feel the tension between them, and the bitterness Bo held toward Satine.
"Oh no," Korkie muttered to himself when one of the colored pencils rolled out of reach. He reached for it and gasped when it flew into his hand. How did that happen? I didn't even touch it! Korkie giggled when he saw that he was levitating along with his pencils and filmsi. "Wow!" Korkie breathed, clapping his hands.
"Korkie!" Satine's horrified yell distracted Korkie and he fell to the ground, yet he didn't cry when he hit the hard marble. Satine rushed to Korkie and checked him for any injuries. He just had a few minor scrapes on his hands. She frantically looked back at her sister who returned her look with a knowing look. Both knew that Korkie was like his father.
"Auntie Satine!" Korkie looked up at her with wide eyes. "Did you see what I did? It was amazing." The boy had no idea that what he had done would change his life forever.
"Korkie, look at me." Bo-Katan approached the two. Korkie looked at her. "You have a wonderful gift, but you must never use your gift in public." She crouched in front of the boy.
"Why?" Korkie tilted his head.
"Because your gift makes you different, and it's a gift many Mandalorians don't like. Promise us you won't use it in public." Bo-Katan stared into Korkie's blue eyes that widened and as fear flashed in them.
Korkie looked from Bo-Katan to Satine. "I won't," he mumbled dejectedly.
"Thank you. However, when you are alone with either me or my sister, you can practice and use it." Satine promised, smiling when Korkie lit up.
"Thank you, Auntie Satine!" Korkie hugged Satine, and Bo-Katan saw how much it hurt Satine to not call Korkie her son. "I won't let you down."
