Chapter 9: Wolves 11-14-16

*Aragorn: 6 years old

Aragorn had spent almost the whole day up in the tree. He listened to the roaring of the waterfall splash water, birds chirping in the tree he had climbed, and his own stomach growl with hunger. He had fallen asleep sometime in the afternoon when the sun went behind the large tree creating shade where Aragorn lay now.

He woke up and crawled backwards from the branch he was on. The sun was going down and Elrond was probably wondering where he was. He then climbed down the large trunk of the strong tree slowly. He put back on his boots and then walked off to go to the great Hall. That's where all the Elves ate.

He could see the building not too far away from him, so he started heading over to it hoping he wasn't too late for dinner. His stomach growled as he got closer, due to him not eating anything yet that day. Aragorn pushed open the door to the building and froze when he looked inside.

Once a week, all the Elves would gather for a big feast, since Elves don't need to eat every day. Today was the day they had all gotten together. It looked like every Elf in Rivendell was there gathered for a feast. There were some female Elves playing harps and violins and everybody seemed to be in a jolly good mood.

"There you are!" Elrond hurried over to Aragorn who was still standing in the doorway, "I've been looking all over for you,"

All the Elves in the room now looked to Aragorn. It made him feel very uncomfortable.

"Here, come this way," Elrond said and lead Aragorn to the table.

Elrond sat down at the head of the table again and Aragorn sat next to him. Arwen was across from him again looking at him with a smile. She couldn't take her eyes off Aragorn.

Elladan and Elrohir sat next to their youngest sister eating brightly colored fruit. They welcomed Aragorn as he sat down at the table as well.

The table was filled with all Elves. The Elf next to Aragorn started speaking,

"Hello, my name is Haldir," he held out his hand.

"Hi, I'm Estel," Aragorn held out his hand too and they shook.

"That's a lovely name!" said Haldir, "Are you from here?"

Aragorn shook his head.

"Neither am I. I am from Lothlorien, another Elf kingdom. I'm just visiting,"

Aragorn nodded with a smile and then turned his attention to Elrond.

"Where were you today?" Elrond asked plating salad into his bowl.

"In a tree," he answered simply.

"I see," Elrond nodded with a smile, "You must be hungry,"

"Very,"

Aragorn plated his plate and bowl with a large salad and lots of fruit and vegetables. He munched into carrots and crunched through celery. He was very delighted to have such colorful and tasty food. Once all the Elves where done eating, they all left the room. Aragorn left and headed to his room which was right next to Elrond's house. Except he wasn't tired due to him sleeping all day.

Out to the east he could hear howling of wolves. He looked over and saw the same forest he had been in the day before. Instead of going to his room, he walked towards the forest. He walked across a long thin bridge and once he was over, went into the woods. The ground was muddy from last night's rain.

The howling grew louder and louder until he could see the wolf that was howling. It was a beautiful shade of grey with a white fluffy chest. The wolf had feet that looked like they were dipped in black paint. It stood on a boulder looking up to the moon howling.

Aragorn got closer and soon enough he was about five feet away from the beautiful wild dog. The wolf's ears pricked to the side and she looked in Aragorn's direction. She jumped off the rock and approached Aragorn with caution. She was very watchful of his every move even when he was barely moving.

Aragorn reached out his hand towards her and she growled a little. He flinched, but took a step closer to her and she stopped growling. Aragorn took one more step and he touched her wet nose.

The wolf and Aragorn looked eye to eye. The wolf was only a little taller than Aragorn which probably made her feel more dominant and stronger than the boy. Aragorn smiled as he felt her soft neck. She was so soft and elegant.

The wolf licked Aragorn's cheek which made him laugh. He remembered Elrond giving him a hug suddenly and gave the wolf a hug. His face was buried in her fur. The wolf's head sat on Aragorn's shoulder returning the hug.

"Estel!" Aragorn spun around and there stood Elrond. He had his sword out and ready, "Don't move,"

Aragorn looked behind the wolf he had just hugged, and a whole pack of wolves stood behind their leader. He hadn't even heard them approach. Elrond moved closer to Aragorn with his sword.

"It's okay, they are nice," Aragorn said not wanted him to hurt the wolves.

As if to agree with Aragorn, all the wolves backed up leaving him to stand there alone.

"Let's go," Elrond whispered, "You were lucky. Normally wolves aren't that kind,"

Aragorn followed Elrond back out of the forest giving one last glance back at the wolf pack. But they were already gone. They were fast and silent animals. Aragorn had heard a lot about wolves, but had never seen them in person. He heard they were good fighters. Aragorn eyed the sword Elrond sheathed. Maybe he could be a fighter too.
