Chapter 76: Friendly Letter 4-29-17
Aragorn: 17 years old
Aragorn awoke to peacefulness around him. There was no chaos and as he looked through squinted eyes, he saw the giant beast lying dead about ten feet away from him. His knife was still stuck in the monster's head and his sword stuck in its back.
Usually whenever Aragorn awoke from passing out, there was always somebody there to support him, but as he looked around there was nobody. It was then that he realized he was still in the crystal filled cave. He looked to the crystal that had been producing all the sleeping fog and as he looked at it longer, he noticed that the crystal was completely smashed.
That's not how I left it.
That's when he remembered the mysterious archer who had somewhat been trying to help him fight the beast. Aragorn sat up and out of sudden pain, looked down to his arm. It was the first part of his body that had gotten hit by the thorned club. To his surprise, his arm was wrapped in a white bandage from his wrist to just above his elbow.
As he sat up more, something caught his attention by his feet. It was a bright piece of water paper with black ink marking Elvish words. Almost the whole page was filled with the Elvish writing. As Aragorn studied the parchment more, he noticed that the letter was assigned to him! It read his name!
Aragorn looked around once more before lifting the paper and reading it in his head. It said:
Estel,
This is probably the last thing you would ever be expecting to read from me. I am the Elf who saved you from the beast. I am the Elf who wrapped your arm securely in a splint. I am the one who smashed the rest of the crystal. I am the Elf that has hated you since you were brought to Rivendell many years ago. But I had a reason.
I have left to Lothlorien and might go traveling through Middle Earth, but know that we will never meet again. Nor do I wish to see you again. Over the past years, I have watched you grow into such a unique human. You brought out the good in everything and always gave everything your very best. I guess you could say that I was jealous of you. Especially since you were human, and I an Elf. I think I have changed and I hope to be as good of a person as you some day.
I know that when you are done reading this, you will look around the cave with the same face of desperation I have seen you make lots of times. You might even weep; not all tears are for evil. I will be far gone by the time you wake.
I hope you will live a full life and that it is filled with hope. And I know it will be, hence your name. I am sorry for all the pain I put you through.
-Greakth
It was true. Aragorn was in tears as he read the letter once again. As the letter had said, Aragorn looked around the cave, as if searching for Greakth. The look on his face must have been what Greakth had described in the letter. Out of all the Elves in Rivendell, Aragorn had not been expecting this from Greakth.
Aragorn folded the letter into fourths and tucked it into his shirt pocket. He knew he didn't have any time to waste as he made his way back to the dead beast. Slowly he took his sword out of the beast back and his knife out of its swollen brain. It was hard to get out since all the blood had dried around the metal. Finally, Aragorn got them out, cleaned them, and strapped it to his belt and back once more.
The fog had stopped going out of the crystal. Probably because it was completely smashed, like Greakth had said it was. Aragorn wondered why Greakth was even in the cave and how he had gotten there. He definitely could not have fit through were Aragorn had come from.
Aragorn sighed and made his way back the way he had come in from. As he peered down at himself, he knew Elrond would not be pleased. His shirt was ripped in many places, he had bruises and scratches all over his body, and his arm was most likely broken or sprained. He knew he was fine, but Elrond would only see the worst.
He made his way towards the tunnel he had come through earlier that morning. His stomach growled with hunger and he hoped to get back to Rivendell before night fell. The cave was dark which led Aragorn to believe that it was almost night, or already night. As he crouched down to the tunnel, he heard a ticking noise. Almost like a bomb?
Aragorn peered inside of the small tunnel and couldn't believe what he saw. It was exactly as he thought. A bomb! Immediately he backed up, almost tripping on the crystals surrounding the cave. He assumed it was the Elves from Rivendell trying desperately to get inside the cave to Aragorn since he had not yet arrived back in Rivendell. Al least the fog was gone.
"STOP!" Aragorn screamed on the top of his lungs, "DON'T SET IT OFF! I AM HERE!"
There was no time. He ran back as far as he could, arriving back in the circular room. He saw the dead creature and passed it and pressed his back against a rock wall that did not face the bomb. Aragorn didn't know how powerful the bomb was, but he assumed it was big since he assumed the Elves wished to blow up an entire wall.
Curling himself into a tight ball, he covered his ears and tucked his face into his chest and knees. Time seemed to take forever as he sat there waiting for the bomb to go off. Suddenly he heard the explosion and tucked himself securely in-between a boulder and the wall safely. The ground rumbled and Aragorn felt the earth underneath him crack. The bomb had been set off.
A/N: Where you expecting the note to be from Greakth?! I thought it was honestly a really nice note though. What did you think? :)
