Chapter 72: Mystery Fog 4-18-17

Aragorn: 17 years old

After about a month of calmness in Rivendell, Aragorn was feeling like himself again. He had heard Elrond tell him the story of how he thought he was dead, but then Lagorion came and saved the day. Everything had gone back to normal and Rivendell was quiet for the month. However, Rivendell couldn't always be perfect.

On that particular morning, Aragorn had woken up to many Elves looking to the sky over the mountains closest to the kingdom. He saw Lyki and some of his other friends huddled in a large group looking to the mountains. It looked as if they were looking at something, although Aragorn himself could not see anything.

"What's going on?" Aragorn asked.

Lyki and the other turned around to Aragorn and Lyki explained,

"We were just looking over the mountains. There appears to be some sort of fog heading our way,"

Aragorn looked to were Lyki started pointing, but he saw nothing.

"Are you sure?" Aragorn asked, "I don't see anything,"

"That's because you are a human, bud, remember?" one of the other Elves said with a playful smile.

Aragorn shrugged and went to the Hall so he could eat breakfast. In front of the building he saw more Elves looking to the sky. It was Kenath and Fisarnith. They were pointing over the same mountains the other Elves had been pointing at.

"Whatcha doing?" Aragorn asked as he got closer.

Kenath jumped at Aragorn's sudden appearance, so Fisarnith answered,

"There is a brisk fog on the air," he paused and pointed up to the mountains, "Over the mountain,"

Aragorn looked, but again saw nothing. He shrugged and walked past the Elves as he went into the Hall. Once he was in, an Elf nearly ran into him. Aragorn recognized the Elf as the one that normally got his breakfast ready. His name was Therlon.

"Sorry, Estel," Therlon said and handed Aragorn a red apple, "The Elves have a special meeting with Lord Elrond this morning. Feel free to get some food if you wish,"

Aragorn had no time to answer because Therlon was already out the door. But one thing Aragorn knew was that he was going to attend the meeting too. Right now.

-----

Aragorn followed Therlon to the normal meeting place where Elrond held all of his meetings. Aragorn had never attended any of the meetings in his life, but he decided that today would be his first. He had never been too concerned about anything in the past, but he was curious about the mysterious fog that he for some reason could not see.

As he got closer, he noticed that all the Elves were already sitting in a big circle. Elrond was in the middle of them talking. Aragorn could see Elladan and Elrohir on either side of him. Elrond announced,

"It comes from the mountain,"

"Yes, but why would the fog just randomly signal itself now?" Lyki asked who was sitting close to Lagorion and Kenath.

"Something must have triggered it," Elrohir stated.

"Or someone," Kenath whispered looking nervous as usual.

Aragorn moved silently forward and watched Therlon take his seat next to Kenath and his brother. He moved behind a bush that was behind one of the rows of Elves. He knew nobody could see him from where he hid.

"All is true," Elrond agreed, "Soon the fog will come over the mountain and into Rivendell. What must we do?'

There was silence for a moment before Tahl spoke up and suggested,

"Somebody must go to the mountain,"

"You?" Elladan proclaimed.

"No, definitely not I," Tahl responded and sat back hoping to look invisible.

All Elves at the meeting were quiet and Aragorn held his breath as he waited for another Elf to speak. He was very curious about the fog and wondered what was causing it and what it would do to Rivendell. If anything.

"I can go to the mountain," Lagorion spoke up for the first time.

"And what? Be killed?" another Elf murmured.

"Somebody has to do it," Lagorion said giving the Elf's comment a sharp look.

Aragorn was now wondering what could kill somebody from climbing a mountain.

"Do we know what type of fog it is?" Kenath whispered.

"It is Estayn fog which we all know means rest bringer," Elrond explained, "If you breath in but a single whiff of the fog, you will fall into a deep sleep,"

"Does anybody have any idea on who would have activated the fog?" asked Lyki.

"I was thinking a troll or goblin. They might have disturbed one of the many crystals in that mountain. One of the crystals could have held the Estayn fog," Therlon explained.

"If I went up to the mountain, how could I stop the fog?" Lagorion asked.

Aragorn had been wondering the same thing as he listened to the conversation.

"You simply destroy the crystal that is pouring out the fog," Elladan explained.

Aragorn watched Lagorion nod and stood as he said,

"Does anybody care to join me?"

It was silent again and Aragorn was trying to keep himself planted to the ground even though he wanted to spring up and join his friend. More than anything he wished he could, but he knew Elrond would not allow it.

"I will," Lyki spoke up and stood up next to Lagorion.

"It is settled then," Elrond said and stood up as well, "Lagorion and Lyki will travel to the mountain and destroy the crystal. Any questions?"

Nobody responded, so Elrond went on,

"That concludes our meeting, have a pleasant day. Thank you all for attending,"

Aragorn watched all the Elves rise from where they were sitting and leave the meeting area. Aragorn stood up as well and made it appear as though he were just arriving at the scene. Aragorn past through the many Elves as he made his way to Elrond. Once he got to Elrond, the Elf looked at him and said,

"Where did you come from?" he looked flustered about how Aragorn had merely appeared out of nowhere.

Aragorn ignored the question and asked his own simple one,

"Can I go with Lagorion and Lyki to the mountain?"

A/N: Now there is a new crisis, lol! :D
