Chapter 60: Cries from the Dark 3-27-17

Aragorn: 17 years old

The only sounds in the Woodland Realm that night was Aragorn's sobbing in the dungeon. He had mixed emotions that night. Some of fear, sadness, worry, and anger. He didn't understand why the Elves were so different from the ones in Rivendell. All he hoped was for Elrond to come and get him.

The one person that he missed most was Elrond and if he could see him know he would start crying even harder. He missed his family and friends so much after not seeing them for over a week. He was truly lost.

"Are you okay?" Aragorn didn't even hear the voice over his crying.

"Are you okay?" the voice said again.

Aragorn stopped and looked up. He had pressed himself up against the far corner of the cell he was in. He was on the ground with his knees pressed to his chest and his arms wrapped around his legs. As he looked up and through the bars of the cell, he saw Legolas. The last person he wanted to see. The one who had gotten him into this mess.

"What?" Aragorn croaked.

"Are you okay?" Legolas asked, concern was written on his sharp face.

Aragorn started crying again as he sobbed,

"No,"

"What's wrong?" Legolas asked.

Aragorn only looked up to the Elf and stared into his bright blue eyes.

"Please talk to me," Legolas urged.

"You are probably only here to get more information that you will assume is a lie. There is no point in talking," that was hard enough for him to saw as he put his head back down and focused taking deep breaths.

Legolas sighed and was quiet for a moment. Finally, he said,

"I'm sorry. I have forgotten how sensitive humans are,"

Aragorn looked up with a sad look to his face and shook his head.

"I miss my family," Aragorn said and put his face back down, "And I don't understand why I am here and why the Elves think I am lying. I have never lied before and... I don't know why I am even talking to you, never mind,"

"I'm sorry," Legolas said, "Do you wish to tell me about your family? Maybe it will make you feel better," Legolas suggested.

Aragorn only stared at Legolas with a longing look in his eyes. He started coughing and his head hurt badly. He was so dehydrated and his stomach was growling and wouldn't stop. He shook his head.

"Do you want something to eat or drink?" Legolas offered as if he had read Aragorn's mind.

Aragorn was silent at first and then said,

"I haven't eaten in about a week," he murmured.

"Good heavens!" Legolas exclaimed, "I will be back,"

Aragorn watched the Elf wonder away and he was silent. He took heavy breaths and coughed again. A thought struck him that was horrible, as he knew he was getting sick.

Elrond had always been there for him when he was, but not this time. Elrond was the only Elf who knew how to take care of a human child. He was the only one that ever had.

He took off his chain mail and brown lassed up shirt as he felt himself getting a fever. The situation was getting worse and worse by the moment. Anger crashed into him like a wave and he threw his clothes across the cell. He took a deep breath and told himself he needed to calm down.

A thought occurred to him as he remembered that one of his knives was in his boot. He felt it and stroked the blade. He thought that he could stab Legolas and run away, but that wasn't right. There was hope even in the darkest of places and he reminded himself of this.

A couple minutes' past and the Elf prince came back. Legolas was holding a tray of food and a glass of water. He was looking over his shoulder nervously, Aragorn could tell something was wrong. Aragorn noticed how the cell door would not allow Legolas to simply push the tray under the door. That meant the Elf would have to open the cell door.

"Do you promise not to move if I open this door?" Legolas said cautiously as he balanced the tray with one hand and keys in the other.

Aragorn nodded and tucked himself into a tighter ball in the corner. He had no desire to move anyway. Legolas unlocked the cell door and set the tray down on the floor and then quickly jumped back and out. Aragorn watched him do this. It made him feel as though he were some feared evil creature.

"You open and close the door fast as though you don't trust me," Aragorn said quietly.

"I have only just met you, besides... you are a human," Legolas said this in a discussed tone of voice.

"You don't like humans?" Aragorn asked and reached for the food.

"No, they are greedy, selfish, and think only for themselves," Legolas said as he looked to Aragorn.

"Hmm... have you ever met one?"

Legolas paused as though Aragorn had caught him in a lie. He said,

"Well, no. Only you,"

"I guess you can't judge me then,"

Legolas narrowed his eyes at Aragorn as he happily stuffed a piece of buttered bread in his mouth and smiled.

"Thank you," Aragorn said as he munched next on apple slices that were cut up for him perfectly.

Legolas nodded. Then from behind him an Elf came and whispered,

"Your father needs you, my Lord," and they bowed.

"Whatever about?"

"About the prisoner," the Elf locked awkward eyes on Aragon making them both flinch.

Aragorn averted his eyes and looked back to Legolas as he watched the two Elves.

"Alright, thank you," Legolas said and with a sideways glance at Aragorn he then he was gone.

Aragorn was alone again, but at least the food was satisfying his overdue hunger.
