Ch 83 - The Remedy
~Sara~
After the first month of living in the Safe Haven, the place already looked like a village near the beach with all the hard work put into it, and with everyone's cooperation.
Most people from both Mazes retained their original jobs, and with the help of many other new hands, the work was finished in a month and a half total.
Since there was no more need for Runners, Minho and the other ones became Builders and they were also responsible for exploring every inch of the place to find more supplies and food. Although food was already provided, it didn't hurt to look for food that wasn't canned or nonperishable. Not to mention, they would soon need to start planting again.
Hence Newt and Sara, as well as other previous Track-hoes, were also responsible for the new change in diet since they went back to work the gardens. Soon, they would be harvesting vegetables and legumes.
There were also plenty of animals in the place, although they did have to walk further outwards to find the cattle for the meat supply. Naturally, even Winston got his job back.
Jorge, being one of the older guys and one of the founders of the place, was put in charge; he was given Alby's role as in the Glade. And Jorge chose Minho as his second; it was both by Minho's insistence and Jorge's own request. The special bond between those two was hilarious and chaotic, and it was incredible to compare them now to the first time they met. But at least Sara knew that the Safe Haven was in good hands.
Jorge and Brenda, who worked with WICKED and knew about medicine, had studied Rebecca's book, and with Sara's help, the few non-immune Gladers and girls were finally cured.
No one was harmed, nor were their lives at risk. It was finally over. No trace of the Flare virus remained.
Rebecca was right.
Sara was indeed 'The Remedy,' and being able to help was the most honorable experience by far.

"Yuna!" shouted Minho one morning, cupping his hands around his mouth.
Sara looked up from the gardens and saw Minho walking around, calling for the girl.
It'd been about two years since they'd arrived at the Safe Haven, and Minho didn't plan to stop being annoying anytime soon. With Minho being nineteen years old, it was assumed he would come of age or something, but he never stopped being an immature child. And life was more fun that way, so it didn't matter.
Newt turned to Sara and smirked. "Those two again?"
"You know them," she said, smiling. "Ever since she told him they were siblings, they haven't stopped acting like such."
It was quite interesting to see how different brother and sister were. Yuna was nice, and she always defended everyone against Minho's sarcasm. In Newt and Lizzy's case, they were both extraordinary people who were kind to everyone, and Lizzy was a bit more headstrong, but they weren't complete opposites like Minho and Yuna. No wonder those two were always arguing.
Rachel and Lizzy came jogging toward the gardens next.
"Guys," Lizzy laughed, and her eyes were full of amusement. "We're pulling a prank on Minho. Wanna join?"
Newt and Sara gave each other one look, immediately stopping what they were doing, and stepped out of the gardens.
Thomas, Harriet, and Chuck also joined the prank. It was everyone against Minho for being the slinthead that he was. Even Aris joined.
He'd had a chat with Minho about a year before, basically apologizing for lying to them with Teresa, and for giving him problems over his relationship with Rachel. They weren't friends, but at least no one would ever have to worry about them killing each other.
"So, what's it gonna be?" asked Sara.
"Okay," Rachel began. "He's mad at me because I got drunk on Gally's recipe and didn't go back to our room last night. So, I'm trying to get back at him for getting mad at me. I eventually went to bed so he can't complain. But Yuna offered to help with this, so she was hiding his underwear near the beach, and now she's hiding from him."
"So you guys need to hide Yuna from him, by turns. And just act like you haven't seen her and all," said Lizzy.
As if on cue, Yuna came sprinting through the bushes, grinning from ear to ear with pure glee.
"Guys, you need to help me," she said in between her rapid breathing as she came to a stop.
"You mean he's bloody walking around with pants but no underwear on?" asked Newt, cringing. Yuna smirked and nodded at him. "Disgusting," he added before he burst out laughing.
Sara took his hand and motioned for Yuna to follow them. "Come on, you can hide in our closet."
They entered Newt and Sara's room, and Yuna immediately opened the door to the closet and hopped inside. Newt took clothing from the hangers and piled them on top of her.
"Don't make a sound," he instructed. "If he comes inside, we'll try to distract him so you can beat it out of here."
Sure enough, the door burst open after a while, and Minho stood there, watching as Newt and Sara sat on the bed, just talking and laughing.
"Is the shank here?" he panted. Sara could tell he wanted to be mad, but the whole thing was so ridiculous that he couldn't help but let a small smile tug at his lips. "I promise I'll give you guys some of my food for a week if you tell me where she is."
Sara smirked. "Sounds tempting, but you're forgetting I work in the kitchen with Frypan and his girlfriend. Food is within my reach."
"And I think I saw Yuna heading to the kitchen this morning," Newt added, trying to hide a smile. "Poor girl must be hungry after all the calories she's burning running away from you."
Minho narrowed his eyes. "I don't buy it."
"Minho, hurry! She just walked out of the bathrooms!" Chuck shouted, peering inside the room to get his attention. It was a brilliant strategy to have Chuck pitch in to fool him; hilarious even.
"Oh, she's so screwed right now," said Minho before shooting up and rushing out of the room. "I swear, if I get a rash on my butt, it's her fault."
Sara and Newt burst out laughing as soon as he left, and they heard a muffled laugh coming out of the closet too.
"Yuna, get out of here," said Sara, in between laughs.
The girl scrambled to get out and thanked the couple before rushing out to find somewhere else to hide.
By the time the afternoon hit, it was Minho who had disappeared. Yuna joined the others to go look for him, and it soon stopped being a prank once they all began to worry. No one had seen him, and he'd been missing for at least three hours since then.
They even set out to search for him all the way at the beach. He had to be there; they had already searched high and low for him elsewhere.
Yuna looked panicked as they stepped down into the sand, but they were all ready to spread out and continue the search.
"I shouldn't have pranked him. Now I don't know where he is, and if something bad happened to him, I don't know what I'm gonna do." Yuna was so scared that she actually sounded like she was about to cry.
Sara was worried too, and she had no idea what to tell Yuna.
Newt seemed to be experiencing a déjà vu, because he grabbed onto Sara's hand tightly, and he had a haunting look in his eyes. He was probably remembering that day in the Glade when she went missing and it turned out she'd been attacked. She squeezed his hand, reassuring him, but Minho had been gone a scary amount of time. He never simply disappeared like that.
Thomas gasped and pointed ahead. "There!"
Everyone turned to see where he was pointing, and they immediately rushed over to find Minho sprawled on the floor.
He was lying on the sand, next to a boulder, and they noticed the blood marks on the large rock, and on the sand right next to Minho's head. Sara and Newt crouched down and turned him over to see more blood marks on his forehead; it was dripping down the side of his face.
"Minho!" shouted Yuna, freaking out.
Sara immediately set his head on her lap and took a look at the gash. It didn't look like it was deep at all, and the color of the blood was kind of strange.
Yuna was crying as she clutched Minho's shirt. "I'm sorry, bro. None of this would've happened if it weren't for me. Minho, I'm sorry, but please open your eyes. Look at me!"
Rachel also sat down next to him, going into a panic herself. "You better not be playing with me."
Minho suddenly shot up and screamed, immediately falling into a fit of laughter, pointing at the face Yuna and Rachel made as they screamed.
"I got you good, sis." He smiled devilishly. "And you too, Rachel. That's what you get for trying to fool me."
Everyone was stunned, simply blinking back at Minho.
Yuna was furious, and she started hitting him repeatedly. "Why would you do that?" She kept hitting him, and he tried protecting himself, but he couldn't stop laughing. "I even put your stupid underwear back in your room!"
"That went too far, you idiot," said Rachel, crossing her arms.
"Aw, baby," Minho cooed at her. "You care about me."
"I'll have to reconsider," she muttered. "I thought you were bleeding out—don't ever do that crap again!"
"Calm down—it's fake. See?" He lightly tapped his fingers on his own forehead and showed her. "It's beet dye and ketchup. I stole the stuff from the kitchen and prepared the concoction myself. I'm a genius, aren't I?"
"You're a slinthead, that's what you are," said Sara, shaking her head as they all headed back to the clearing. "I wouldn't have helped treat you if you'd actually gotten hurt pulling off a prank like that."
"'Course you would've," said Minho. "You're 'The Remedy.' It's your job."
Sara glared at him. "Well, you're not the 'Real Leader,' Thomas is. So I don't know what you're doing taking his place next to Jorge, but here we are."
Everyone snorted, and Minho had to keep his mouth shut and stifle a laugh out of pure embarrassment.
