Chapter 11

Lydia's POV:

"So then what?" Hope asks me.

"What happened on your date?" I smile at the memory.

"Our date was great. Simple, but fun. We went to see a cheesy Disney movie, but somehow, it was wonderful," I tell her.

"Cheesy Disney movie?" She asks with a raised eyebrow.

That's when I get into my story.

*Flashback*

"What movie do you want to see?" Ponyboy asks as we walk hand in hand into the movie house.

"I'm not even sure what's in theaters right now," I admit. I've never been much for movies, other than when Pony wants to go. I'd rather read a book, it's a much more peaceful feeling to know that you can create the characters, make the sound of their voice fit them, and never have one miscast because it's all in your head any you make it perfect.

"I know there's To Kill a Mockingbird. I really want to see that one," He says. I nod. Maybe we could see that, I read the book in school a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I look at the titles advertised in front of me and battle myself. That's another reason I like books better: they're free from libraries and you have much more time to read them. Movies take forever and are expensive enough that if I even wanted to go, I could only afford one a week.

State Fair looks so cute, but I Ponyboy doesn't like musicals. He would see it, but I can't ask him to, right? He might enjoy the Grimm's Fairy Tales, but those are scary... I don't want either of us having nightmares from it... Beauty and the Beast? No, we already know that story... Five Weeks in a Balloon? Pony might like that one, Barbara Eden's in it and he and I have watched I Dream of Jeanie together before.

"Which ones are you debating on?" Pony asks me, breaking me out of my thoughts. I don't respond, just move my eyes along the titles.

"Oh Ponyboy!" I exclaim once I find something interesting, making people around me jump, or stare, in the quiet room. I blush.

"Sorry," I say quietly, "But what if we see Bon Voyage!?" I suggest. It was probably a cheesy Disney movie, but I knew we would both love it. A few years ago, Ponyboy and I had gone with his mother to see the movie Swiss Family Robinson in theaters, and became so obsessed with it, that we went back three times. That was also a Disney movie, and they both have Tommy Kirk, so I figure this one would be pretty good too.

"Yeah," Ponyboy says, obviously remembering his childhood days.

"I'll go get the tickets," he says, walking up in line. I nod.

"Okay, I'll go get the popcorn," I tell him, turning away to go purchase it. Digging in his pocket for a second, he hands me a rolled up $5 bill.

"Ponyboy, I can't take this. I'll buy the popcorn," I tell him, giving it back. He frowns.

"Lydia, I offered to take you. Why can't I pay?" He complains. I smile at him, taking it out of his hands.

"Okay, fine," I say with a laugh. He never did like me spending my own money him.

Getting over to the snack counter, I order a large popcorn, a water for me, a Pepsi for Ponyboy, and some gummy worms, his favorite. It comes to $7.50, so I use my own money. After paying and taking everything, I walk back over to Ponyboy.

"How long until the movie?" I ask him. He looks at his watch.

"About 15 minutes. Wanna go in now?" He asks. I nod.

"Oh, by the way," I say, taking the $5 out of my purse.

"I didn't spend it," I say, winking at him as he laughs.

"How much was all of this?" He asks, looking at everything. I shrug.

"Don't worry about it, it wasn't much, Pony," I tell him. He just shrugs, holds the door open for me like a gentleman when I walk in.

We sit down in the second row, watching the screen. Only the commercials have come on at this point, but we're both filled with "first date jitters", to the point where we can't even look at each other.

As soon as the movie starts, I'm back in 1960, watching Swiss Family Robinson for the first time. Mrs. Curtis invited me, not even expecting the money that my mother didn't give my my ticket.

"This movie looks fun, doesn't it?" She asked us, smiling.  Pony and I both nodded, never being so excited to go see a movie before this. And it was fun. He and I were obsessed for years after. After Mrs. Curtis passed away, our love for the movie kind of died with her, although we kept it in the back of our minds for times like this when we could get away and just enjoy.

When Tommy Kirk appears on screen, I dip my hand in the popcorn bucket, which is on Ponyboy's lap. Just like in any cheesy, overdone moment during a date, our hands met. Instead of pulling them away, we intertwined our fingers, and rested our hands together on the arm in between our two chairs for the rest of the movie, not even touching the popcorn bowl.

Our date ended with him gentlemanly walking me back to Buck's, where I was staying.

"Do you want to go out again?" He asks me. I nod.

"Of course." And then it happened, special although probably our fourth time doing it. I stand on my tiptoes, seeing as he's about a head taller than me, and our faces get closer to each other, and our lips touch after a long time, as if we were in slow motion. And then, the kiss, only lasting about a second, was broken.

"Okay. See you at school?" I say awkwardly.

"Yeah," he says. He walks away, but not before kissing my cheek sweetly, saying goodnight, and watching to make sure I get in okay.

A/N: 1960s Disney movies are the greatest things in existence I swear to god. Like have any of you guys ever seen The Misadventures of Merlin Jones with Tommy Kirk and Annette Funichello? It's one of my all time favorites! And if you don't know who Annette is, she was in Beach Blanket Bingo, the movie they were watching at the drive in when Ponyboy met Cherry. =)
