"Mom..." She whispers, tears filling her eyes as she closes the door.

"Hi, honey. Everything ok?" I ask her. Her eyes flash, and she blinks the tears away.

"Does it look like I'm ok?" She snaps. Just like her father, her real father. She just has that characteristic, she's my perfect little 16 year old angel, but sometimes she's rude and sarcastic, just like him. Except he was almost always rude and sarcastic, up until his final moments. I just wish I could see him again, that he could meet his beautiful daughter. He would be so proud of our little princess...

"What happened sweetie?" I ask her. Tears well up in her eyes again and I take her hand, bringing her to sit down on the couch.

"Mom... they told me that I'm a bastard child, and that Dad... isn't my real dad. They told me that I don't look like him and you had an affair. They told me I don't deserve to go to go to this school because of it and that's the reason I don't have any friends. Because I was a mistake," She tells me. I take a long deep breath. I feel like I've been punched, like the wind's been knocked out of me. She's right. What they're telling her... It's correct. She was a mistake, originally. She wasn't meant to happen. But I still love her, and so does Ponyboy. He raised her as his own, why do genetics matter?

"Mom... Is it true? What they're saying?" She asks, her voice quivering. Instead of answering, I pull my baby girl into my arms and stroke her hair, trying to calm her down.

"It doesn't matter, honey. Honestly," I tell her. She sighs.

"Yes, mom. It does. It means a lot. So tell me the truth. Tell me everything," She demands. But I don't want to. Why can't Hope, Ponyboy and I just live a nice, happy life together without this coming up? It's the one thing I've been dreading telling her ever since she was born.

"Your father's name was Dallas Winston."
