Chapter Seven

It was very loud in Starclan.

It also hurt.

Wait, how could I feel pain if I were in Starclan?

I heard someone call my name, but I ignored it. I just wanted to relax and go to Starclan. Why should I struggle to survive when letting go was so much easier?

Unfortunately, the voice was very persistent. I felt something nudge me and I recognized a voice, except I couldn't pinpoint who it was. I didn't think it was any of my clanmates . . . so who could it be?

"Lavenderpaw! Lavenderpaw, we've got to go, now! Lavenderpaw, can you hear me? It's me, Bella!" The voice said urgently.

Bella!

That was who was calling me! But, why was she so worried? I was just sleeping, wasn't I? How long have we been traveling now? A quarter moon? A half-moon? I did feel pain, though. Maybe that was why Bella was so worried.

Bella continued to nudge me and calling my name for what seemed like a long time. It should be sunhigh by now, why was she still trying to wake me? That's when I heard an unfamiliar voice.

"We need to get her to safety, and quickly." I heard a tom's voice say.

I moaned. "Let me sleep." I managed to say.

Bella sighed with relief but shook her head. "No, Lavenderpaw. Don't you remember? We're going to continue our journey back to Shadeclan!"

Shadeclan.

My head whirled and the ground seemed to disappear from beneath me. It felt like I was falling, but why was it for so long? Then I finally hit the ground.

I groaned and opened my eyes to see that I was surrounded by pine trees. Wait, I recognized this forest . . .

"Lavenderpaw!" I turned to see Cloverpaw and Pinepaw rushing towards me, worry in their eyes.

"Oh Lavenderpaw, I was so worried!" Pinepaw said.

"Did the twoleg hurt you?" Cloverpaw asked.

"The . . . twoleg?" I said, confused. I couldn't remember what had happened.

Cloverpaw and Pinepaw looked at each other. "Yeah, the one who almost put you in the monster?" Cloverpaw said.

"Are you okay? Did you hit your head?" Pinepaw asked me.

I stood up and I got a head rush. I shook my head as it whirled but that made it worse. I groaned. "I think I did . . ."

"Come on, we'll take you to Berrycloud." Cloverpaw said and the two stood on either side of me for support.

As we padded back to camp, confusion circled through my mind. Why did this feel so wrong? Like this wasn't supposed to be happening? I tried to remember what happened before the falling but she couldn't seem to remember.

When we got back to camp, I was still trying to figure it out. It felt important, like something I absolutely needed to remember.

"Berrycloud!" Pinepaw called and the she-cat poked her head out of the medicine den.

"Oh my Starclan!" I heard her say and told the two apprentices to bring me into her den.

I hadn't realized I was limping or that my paw was even hurt until I tripped over something in the medicine den. I lay down and Berrycloud asked me something but I barely heard her.

"Lavenderpaw!" Cloverpaw called and I raised my head.

"What?" I said and looked around.

Berrycloud looked at me, full of concern. "I asked where you got hurt."

"Hurt?" I said confusedly and looked myself over. "Oh, I guess it's just my paw." I said and held it up."

"She also said she hurt her head." Pinepaw added.

Berrycloud looked into my eyes. "Lavenderpaw, can you tell me what you were doing so close to the thunderpath, without a warrior with you?" She asked carefully.

I looked confused. "Thunderpath . . .?"

"What's wrong with her?" Pinepaw asked the medicine cat.

Berrycloud shook her head. "I can't see anything wrong with her head, but I suspect she just got too dizzy or something similar."

Something then hit me and I looked around. "Wait, where's Mosspaw?" I asked.

Cloverpaw tilted her head. "Who?"

I looked at her confusedly. "Mosspaw . . . our brother?"

Cloverpaw shook her head. "Lavenderpaw . . . we don't have a brother."

My eyes widened. Wait, what? What had happened to Mosspaw? And why couldn't I seem to remember anything?

"I think she should just get some rest. Then she should wake up better in no time." Berrycloud said.

I nodded and yawned. "I am a bit tired . . ." I meowed and settled down in an empty nest. I didn't notice when Cloverpaw and Pinepaw left, because I was already drifting off . . .

I awoke in the forest . . . again. I didn't know what was happening, but I was alone in the pine forest this time. At least . . . I thought I was alone. I could sense the presence of someone, I just couldn't see them.

"Hello?" I called.

I saw a shadowy figure flash past but I didn't catch who it was. It appeared to be a cat, though.

"Wait, come back!" I called to them, but they were already gone.

I sighed, what was happening to me? I kept forgetting things, time seemed to be passing in a weird way, and Mosspaw didn't even exist? Maybe I was just having a really weird dream.

I shook my head, trying to wake myself up. Eventually, I did. I looked around me, confused for a moment, before I realized I was in the medicine den. I looked around but realized Berrycloud wasn't in the den. I sighed and Cloverpaw slowly crept into the den.

"Lavenderpaw?" My littermate whispered.

"Don't worry, Berrycloud isn't here." I said, turning my head to look at her.

Cloverpaw sighed with relief and nodded. She padded over to sit beside me. "So, I want to know . . . what's going on inside your head?"

I blinked at her in surprise. "How do you know stuff is going on inside my mind?"

Cloverpaw smiled. "I'm your sister, silly. I know you better than I know myself. You've always been the most mental cat I know. You've always been thinking about something.

I smiled and nodded before frowning and looking away. "I'm . . . not sure. I can't seem to remember anything from before falling into the forest when you two ran to me. Then when we came to camp, it seemed . . . unfamiliar, like it's not real. Mosspaw isn't here either, and don't say he doesn't exist because I know he does. He's our littermate and Lionstar made him a medicine cat apprentice when he made you, me, and Brindlepaw apprentices."

Cloverpaw watched me and nodded. "I believe you. I don't think you're going crazy or you hit your head too hard, I trust you. You wouldn't act like this unless something was really wrong, and that twoleg barely hurt you when it dropped you."

I smiled. "Thanks, Cloverpaw. So then what do you think is happening?"

Cloverpaw shook her head. "I have no idea, but I know we can figure it out. Did you have any dreams while you were asleep?"

I nodded. "Actually, I did. I was in the forest, but it was on our territory. In fact, it looked like the same place we were when the twoleg grabbed me."

Cloverpaw tilted her head. "Really? That's weird . . ."

"Yeah. And there was this shadowy figure darting around, I could feel them watching me." I shuddered.

Cloverpaw looked at me worriedly. "I hope it's not a dark forest cat doing this to you. Maybe we should tell Lionstar."

I shook my head. "No, Lionstar won't understand. He'll think it's only something I'm making up or that it was just a weird dream I don't need to worry about. You're the only one I can trust with this."

"What about Pinepaw?" Cloverpaw asked.

I looked away and sighed. "I . . . I don't know if I should. For some reason I just have a feeling I shouldn't tell him about this."

Cloverpaw nodded. "I know you, Lavenderpaw. Your heart has always been right, so never stop listening to it."

I smiled gratefully at her. "Thanks, Cloverpaw. I'm glad I have a sister like you to talk to."

Cloverpaw nodded. "I'll always be here for you, no matter what."

I stretched and stood up but winced automatically. I looked down to see my paw was still swollen but it felt normal. I shook it, and the swelling seemed to disappear. I smiled at Cloverpaw.

"I think I'm beginning to unravel . . . well, whatever this is. I don't know what the key is, but my paw just went back to normal!" I said hopefully.

Cloverpaw smiled. "I'm glad I could help." She said. "Now I think you should get some rest, Berrycloud should be back soon from collecting herbs and she'll want to see you resting."

I nodded and lay back down before Cloverpaw padded out of the den. What was that about? Something about Cloverpaw had seemed strange just now . . .

I sighed and lay my head on my paws. Was I trapped in my brain? Was a Dark Forest cat doing this? Was I hallucinating? Or could this just be a super strange dream?

Whatever was happening, I just wanted life to go back to normal . . . however my life had been.
