(A/n: Editor's note. I forgot many of the acts are the same so I'll be shorting them from now on. Also, short chapters mostly until we get to the more modern day stuff)

Marble Zone

Sonic speeds through the plains until they see Y/n in the distance stopping. Sonic quickly slammed on his break and looked at Y/n's eyesight. When he couldn't tell what he was looking at, he tapped his shoulder. When he didn't get a response, he tapped his foot impatiently before tapping his shoulder repeatedly. Y/n got annoyed and shouted at Sonic with frustration, making Sonic snicker. Y/n sighed and simply pointed to Eggman's robots in the distance of a mountain landscape. Sonic snapped his fingers with understanding and began to set off, but Y/n quickly noticed bubbling underneath the ground and used his ears to quickly pull Sonic back. A gyser of lava spewed out in front of them before Sonic let a sigh of relief.

Y/n put Sonic down and took off into the ancient ruin, Sonic then followed.

These two kids rushed through the ancient ruins, passing alongside the grassy platforms to avoid the lava. Y/n's ears turned into a question mark as he seemed to question how the grass wasn't melting. Sonic was calling to him, but to no avail, Sonic grabbed Y/n by the arm and pulled him across the large lava pool. Once over, the two blow past a rusty gate, which Y/n easily busts down with his ears. Sonic sees a moveable box and a switch in the distance, he quickly taps Y/n, who was feeling confident of himself, and turns to face the blue blur. Once seeing what Sonic was looking at, Y/n extends his ears and places the box on the switch, which seemingly allows the previous door to open. Y/n have an unconcerned chuckle while Sonic sighed.

Sonic dashed ahead, but quickly had to duck after an arrow goes flying at him.Y/n was right begin him, heading down stone ruin steps when fire suddenly spewed out from the side. Sensing danger, Y/n grabbed the falling rock from afar, pulling himself towards it.

Sonic leaps over the obstacles and eventually avoids a spiked chandelier going up and down before Y/n leaps on it and lands on the stable ground again. Sonic races him to the top, leading for Y/n to smile. The two raced ahead back on the grass, leaping over the pits as the grass started to catch on fire.

Y/n and Sonic appear in more of the ruins and Y/n looks around and finds the ruins rather cool. Y/n is struggling to move while trying to get used to his new body, Sonic is confused until he sees a chaos emerald from Y/n. Y/n passes it as they looked at with curiosity before Y/n looks at the lava before it almost burns him. Sonic laughs at him as Y/n glared and walks off, throwing Sonic with his ears.

They quickly make it to a dungeon part where they both drop down. Y/n smirks, confident in his speed before Sonic turns around and sees the lava. He takes off, leaving Y/n confused until he feels the heat. He then takes off as well as the lava quickly started to rise and catch up. Many of the badniks were fleeing, allowing the two to use them as a way out, flying them to safety. Once outside the dungeon, they see Eggman in his newest mech.

The Egg Scorcher.

Y/n crossed his arms as he tries to see what the difference was in the mech. Eggman smiled and confidently boasted, but Sonic wasn't convinced. Eggman gritted his teeth before pressing a button on his Egg Mobile. Outwards from the bottom sprayed flames of fire, covering the grass and making the two animals leap across the lava pool besides them. Y/n revved up his feet when he landed and leaped up using his ears for a boost. While in the air, he formed a fist with his ears before punching the machine, making Eggman go back quite a bit. Sonic follows up by leaping up as well, knocking Eggman between the two in a game a tennis before Eggman's machine started smoking. Y/n and Sonic both leaped up and kicked the machine away, causing Eggman to get red with anger and to make the doctor flee.

Sonic looked at his arm, jesting to Y/n that it was a quick fight. Y/n dusts off his hand and sees a capsule. He quickly frees the animals, as they scatter about and back to their homes. However, a rabbit approaches them and holds an emerald. Y/n smiles and gives the rabbit a high five. Sonic points towards the next area, quickly taking off, Y/n digs a tunnel to keep up with Sonic.

Spring Yard Zone

Y/n pops out when he sees a chaos emerald and goes to take it, though Eggman's robots are in the way, a deadly kick makes them flying. Y/n raised his ear as it forms a hand, grabbing the emerald. Y/n smiles, dusting his hands off again. Sonic tries to one up him and they race to see who can get the most defeated.

We cut to Sonic's perspective as he starts off behind a block, seeing two reachable rings on the top. He quickly collects them and travels down the road, destroying three Crabmeats and dodging the shots of the Buzz Bombers. After weaving out of the way, Sonic quickly leaps up and defeats the two Buzz Bombers. Sonic launches onto a nearby red Spring, taking off into the air and seeing the beautiful purple skies and mountains in the distance. He lands on hidden floating piece of land, finding Power Sneakers. He smirked mischievously and quickly breaks it, zooming through the act and hitting several bumpers, taking out five Buzz Bombers before landing on a red Spring. The Red Spring sends Sonic up a slanted wall which had three columns of moving blocks which alternate directions. Sonic quickly traveled through these before seeing four more Buzz Bombers who attack. Sonic quickly avoided the shots and took them out one by one, landing on the back of one and making them fire on each other.

Sonic quickly reaches the bottom and finds a Roller, quickly spinning around it and causing the wind to destoy it. Sonic leaps over the reversed Yellow Spring and hits a switch in the middle of the floor, sending the platform upwards. Sonic sees a hidden switch on a door, pressing it and dashing through the hidden tunnel and taking out two more Buzz Bombers before continuing past a goal post.

Sonic looks around for Y/n, not seeing him in sight. Turn to Y/n's POV and he's currently facing the boss already: The Egg Stinger.

The Egg Stinger, a modified Egg Mobile with an extendable spike on the bottom that is being piloted by Dr. Robotnik. It wasn't really that impressive, but it was fast and it was destroying the little ground Y/n had underneath his feet. Eggman slammed the Stinger on another brick, making Y/n waver before Y/n leaped onto the machine and punched it again. Y/n then had to leap back due to Eggman's defenses. Y/n waved his arms around as he almost fell off into the abyss. The Stinger tried one more time to land a finishing blow, but Y/n's ears protected him and held the Stinger back from impaling him, though Y/n was struggling. With a mighty push, Y/n was able to snap the stinger and impale it in the machine.

Eggman turns red again and quickly takes off. Y/n goes to free the animals but Sonic suddenly arrives and frees them first. Y/n looks at Sonic unamused, who is confused, but Y/n immediately holds the chaos emerald as a light from it points in a direction. Y/n immediately makes his hand into a drill and starts to drill downwards, making Sonic leap into the tunnel with excitement.

Labyrinth Zone

Y/n pops out when he sees a chaos emerald and goes to take it. He quickly grabs it and puts it away, however he notices crystals and water everywhere, wondering just where they are. Sonic pops out the tunnel with dirt before he looks at the water and is taken aback a bit. Y/n noticed and tilts his head in confusion. Sonic tried to shake it off and Y/n leaps in the waters enjoying it and using his ears as propellers in the water. He started to go down the corridor but when he noticed Sonic wasn't following, he quickly came back and motioned his back. Sonic understood and leapt on Y/n's back. Y/n then took off into the level.

Halfway down, a Burrobot jumps out from its hiding spot from the second step up, while another one jumps out of a downward step towards the end of the corridor. Sonic quickly deals with them both and lands back on land eventually. After that, they encounter a swinging iron ball that rotates quickly, but Y/n motions that Sonic and him must go under. Y/n grabs Sonic with his ears as he still used his ears to move fast underwater. Down there, Sonic hits a switch which opens a door on the right and two Burrobots intercepting a Super Ring monitor to the left. Sonic quickly breaks free to attack the two enemies and grab the ring monitor.

However, he starts to lose breath, Y/n's ears grip him through the water and forced him into an air bubble supply for the first time. The two start to travel upwards, hitting various switches that allow for an easier passage. However, once they make it, they are attacked by a fireball-shooting Gargoyle, followed by an upside-down giant spears. Sonic and Y/n quickly avoid the dangerous traps before Eggman sends a missile from his Mobile, leading for the water to quickly rise and for them to avoid falling debris.

The two quickly race up the walls and try to avoid the spikes impaling them from the side. Sonic leaps on a rock to try and make it higher while Y/n drills through the rocks to make sure they don't affect his speed. The two eventually reach the top as Y/n throws Sonic's ball stage into the machine, hitting Eggman and making him drop the capsule of animals and flee. Sonic freed them and quickly chased after Eggman, trying to make sure he didn't get away.

Y/n looks at the ruins of zone, getting a familiar feeling before brushing it off and chasing after Sonic.

Starlight Zone

Sonic is seen landing on a see-saw and seeing Eggman in the distance, once the box hits the other side, Sonic is spiraled into the air. Leading for Eggman to quickly take out the iron ball cannon, shooting fragments of the iron ball out. Sonic is launched back as he lands on a see-saw, one with a Spiked Ball at the end, making the ball explode again.

Sonic quickly got up and ran out of the blast zone, seeing two more and Eggman approaching, Sonic quickly landed on a see-saw, sending the iron ball back to Eggman and hitting his mech. Eggman got furious and dropped several more fragments, leading for Sonic to dodge them all and even stick his tongue out. Eggman grew bright red before launching too many iron balls for Sonic to dodge, however, Y/n arrived and quickly expanded his ears to catch them all before spinning and sending them back. Eggman was taken out for running away back to his tower in the distance.

Sonic looked in shock that they were so close, while Y/n seemed to lecture Sonic about leaving him behind. Y/n even held up the Chaos Emerald that Sonic didn't collect of this zone. Sonic didn't seem like he was listening all that well, focusing more on the tower.

With a quick show of speed, Y/n took off to the tower as Sonic, this time, was the one who had to catch up.

Scrap Brain Zone

The road dips down a bit as the two enter. Y/n leaps beyond two gaps, which would normally be followed by enemies, if Y/n didn't already do a ground pound with his ears. He quickly rolled out of the way of a flamethrower before destroying a Caterkiller and dodging another flamethrower. Sonic leaped ahead and found a Switch and a turnstile that moves counter-clockwise. The path ahead intersects into three paths altogether. The two head towards three side mesh pillars, spinning on them and leaping off of them, using the Buzz Bombers to get a better view of the area. Sonic pointed to an area ahead before the two land on a road that dips down a bit with three Caterkillers approaching them along the way, along with electrical emitters hanging on the ceiling.  Y/n takes out the emitters while Sonic blitzes through the Caterkillers. Beyond the next closed door from there are small platforms that appeared one-by-one, they head to the right. Y/n sees a Lamppost, surrounded by shockers, which he quickly avoided and uses his fist to break down a wall to cross along a large gap.

After crossing the gap, the two avoid some more flamethrowers, and land on a platform-based Conveyor Belt, and deal with some more timed platforms, which appear in existence for longer than the ones encountered earlier. The next drawbridge from there does not feature a bottomless pit below it though, as Sonic leaps over to the other side with much ease.

Y/n sees the back of the tower and quickly points over to it with Sonic. The two smile and eventually use their strength to make their own way forward onto one of the factories. Eggman is seen looking at the monitor with anger, the screen shows all their encounters so far with rage. He smiled however, as he had one of the chaos emeralds. He presses a button as soon as Sonic and Y/n burst into the room. Y/n sees Eggman safe behind a barrier and crosses his ears in a 'What Is That?' Manner. Sonic isn't worried about it and started to walk forward but Eggman leaps on a switch which sent them both falling downward. Y/n quickly tries to use his ears and a slow decent but it's all happening too fast for him to get a good feel.

Y/n and Sonic both land on the ground safely, or rather safely. Y/n helps Sonic up before they look around for an escape. Y/n grabs a chaos emeralds, completing the set of six. Sonic noticed a switch to their left, leading for them to slide down the slope. They both slide with a wall and Y/n quickly saw a switch on the left again, pressing it. A floor activated and quickly the water rises. Sonic takes a deep breath and sees an opening between two Spears.The two run past the double swinging iron balls before avoiding two Fire-shooting Gargoyles attached to the walls. They manage to swing out of the way before going on the path upwards, with two more Gargoyles to avoid, before sending the two back above water. They take a minute to catch their breath before doing another swinging Iron Ball and jumping over the gap. They find two Burrobots and quickly destroy them. The two proceed down the following gap into a pit where there's an Air Bubble supply and two more Burrobots, leading to the final section. They see the light ahead and keep leaping around, destroying any machinery that dares stand in their way. They take the route upwards on the right, dodging the three swinging Iron Balls by jumping and ducking. They see the red spring and quickly leap back up. They use Y/n's ears to drill upwards and through the metal as they land in a piston room. The doctor was in shock before Y/n held Sonic who was in a ball as Y/n winded up his ear before sending Sonic hurling through this pistons and finishing them off in a single blow.

Explosions rang out as the smoke rose. Eggman quickly escaped with his Egg Mobile and fled the scene. Y/n and Sonic quickly escapees the facility, but not before Y/n made sure to smash everything in the lab.

Back at Green Hill, Y/n is seen looking partly sad at his old friends. They were now two different creatures. Could they really be considered the same even after all that's changed him?

He wouldn't be able to play the same way, and maybe the thrill of danger and adventure was something that Y/n had gotten used to. Y/n looked at the rubble and debris that Eggman had left behind before Sonic walked over to them. He saw the conflicted look on Y/n's face and yet stayed silent. Y/n suddenly started to glow as did Sonic, the Chaos Emeralds shoot out from them and spin around into the air. They restore all the zones to their respective and natural states and fills the entries zone with large, colorful flowers.

They then shoot off into several directions. Y/n smiled and realized that maybe that's his goal...

Maybe it's time to go in a different direction.

Sonic walks up to him with a fist bump as does Y/n. Sonic shows him his plane as Y/n leaps on the wings. Sonic was unamused for a moment before giving a smirk and taking off into the sky.

Little did they know, it was the start of a new era.
