39 | Reynico
I drove along, my hands gripping the wheel so tight my knuckles turned white and I felt my face grow hot with anger.
Alone Together was on the radio in the background, full blast.
My nostrils flared as I thought of the recent argument I had had with my boyfriend, Sam, as I glared ahead at the dark road, only lit by the cars headlights.
I wanted to go to Vietnam, to fight in the war, as my father had died in action when I was just four years old.
"I want to avenge my father!"
I hear myself in my head as I had yelled at Sam, the only one I had left in this world.
Mom had died a couple years back, and I was an only child.
"But what will I do when if you die, huh? What will I have then?!" He yelled back, and that was the moment I had walked out the door.
I took a deep breath.
Five minutes later, as I swerved around the bends of Mount Black, I heard the sound of sirens and I squinted ahead to see that there were police cars, a couple fire trucks, and an ambulance covering the whole length of the road. Policemen had put up tape around the road, and people stood at the edge of the cliff of Mount Black.
The police officer that became closer as I drew nearer said, "Just stay put ma'am, and we'll cear up as fast as we can."
Before I could ask what was wrong, he walked off.
So I did the logical thing, I opened the door and got out of the car.
I slowly walked toward the edge of the cliff, hiding in fairly large shrub, wary of the many police officers around.
Luckily no one noticed.
I noticed that a lady stood at the cliff, a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. When I looked closer, I saw she had scratches on her beautiful face, and her raven black hair was a big knot.
Tears poured down her cheeks.
When I looked down the 300 foot cliff, I saw a black car, about 100 feet below, balancing on a ledge.
Paramedics and policemen tried to pull the woman away so she could go to hospital, but she pulled back, kicking and screaming.
"Mrs Di Angelo, you need to calm down!" A policemen instructed, but she didn't listen.
"Reyna! It's okay!" I heard a deep voice say from down below.
As I squinted down at the car, through the rear window, I saw a man, about his early twenties, with black hair, sitting very still at the wheel.
"Nico! Please don't leave me!" The lady-Reyna-cried, and she finally shrugged the strong men off of her.
She ran over to the edge, and dropped onto her hands and knees.
"We're gonna get you out, okay Nico? Isn't that right?!" She yelled, looking at everyone around her, who were obviously discussing what to do.
A man with salt and pepper hair had a sad look in his eyes as he turned to Reyna. Before he could start to explain that there was nothing they could do, Reyna yelled, "Get him out! Get him out!"
She sat at the edge, clutching the grass with her hands and anger, fear and regret blazed in her eyes.
My heart skipped a beat when she then yelled down at Nico, "I-I love you Nico! I love you so much! Please don't go, please don't!"
"I know, Reyna. I love you too." I noticed that tears now poured down his cheeks. "But I need you to do something for me. Please keep living your life okay? Look after James for me, and keep looking after Camp Jupiter. Tell Percy and the others goodbye."
Tears sprung to my eyes, and besides me not knowing what that last part was about, this was one of the worst things I've ever seen.
Reyna stood up.
"That's it." I heard her whisper.
"Reyna, don't! I know what you're thinking, but please don't! Live a happy life, just like we wanted after the War. Have a family with James-"
"Nico, he's gone." Reyna interrupted.
"What?"
"I got a call yesterday. On his training trip with Coach Hedge, he-" She started to cry again.
Nico's face fell.
Suddenly, before anyone could stop her, she then began to slide down, down below to the car with Nico in it, scraping her legs and arms on the way.
She stopped herself from running into the car, and steadily she stood up with no fear of the large amount of space that was between her and the ground.
She walked over to the car, despite the pleas and cries from the surrounding people.
She opened the door, ever so slowly.
I saw Nico lovingly smile, and took her into his arms, kissing her.
I noticed Reyna melted into the embrace.
The car fell.
People stood around, no one saying a word.
Then all of a sudden, there was noise everywhere.
I stiffly got up, already my phone in hand, dialing Sam's number, an apology already forming my mind.
After all, you only live once, right?
