Chapter 16: Aftermath and Ambush

Amber: You guys are back! The Honorary Knights and return triumphant!

Paimon: Yup, we're back from playing tussling with Dvalin!

Patrick: With help from another dragon.

Amber: You just returned yesterday, right? Jean got back first, and she told us all about your heroic deeds.  *sigh* I wonder if I'll ever get an opportunity like that...

Kiana: Maybe you will.

Aether: All thanks to your referral.

Amber: That doesn't come into it. You guys deserve all the credit for how you resolved the crisis. When I brought you people into the city that day, I was just doing my duty as an Outrider.

Paimon: You're welcome! ...But, have you been waiting here for us this whole time?

Amber: Of course not! Just because I'm not out on the front line doesn't mean I don't have work to do... In fact, I'm dealing with the aftermath of the crisis as we speak.

Paimon: Aftermath? Here? What happened in Mondstadt?

Amber: While Master Jean was away, the monsters lurking nearby made a coordinated attack on the city. Fortunately, we weren't completely taken by surprise. I detected the hilichurls were moving closer to the city a while back.

Paimon: Oh yeah! Paimon remembers. When we first met, you were clearing out one of their camps...

Amber: Exactly. And if we hadn't started making preparations back then, Mondstadt would be in much greater danger by now.

Aether: Why would the hilichurls do this?

Kiana: How can hilichurls attack when they have no intelligence?

Amber: I know, it's strange. Hilichurls aren't usually capable of coordinated like this... Our best guess is that the Abyss Order is behind it.

Paimon: They've taken over the hilichurls? Hmm... Good thing we saved Dvalin, or they might've taken him, too...

Amber: That's right. And since I'm the Outrider, it's up to me to keep eyes on the Abyss Order from now on. Ugh, I'm sorry. You should be celebrating your victory, not listening to all this somber talk! Hmm... I promised to take you out for some Sticky Honey Roast, didn't I? Before everyone got caught up in the Stormterror crisis. There's no time like the present, right? You guys hungry?

Kiana: Yes we are.

Paimon: You bet! You may have forgotten till just now, but it's been on Paimon's mind this whole time!

Amber: Awesome, let's go! It's been way too long since I last ate a Sticky Honey Roast myself. Wait for me at Good Hunter. I'll be right there, I just have to clean up here real quick.

We entered into Mondstadt then got to Good Hunter. Kaeya was there.

Sara: Greetings, may I take your order?

Kaeya: Why so cold? I've always thought we enjoy the intimate friendship.

Aether: Oh hey, we didn't see you there...

Kaeya: Hahaha... It seems your great battle sharpened not only your combat skills but your wits as well. A knight after my own heart. To bask in the presences of Mondstadt's new big heroes is quite the morale boost. And that's coming from a knight.

Paimon: Sweet-talking sugar coated Captain Kaeya... Haha, nonsense! I speak from the heart.

Aether: What are you doing here?

Kaeya: Me? Nothing. On the contrary. I'm trying to work out what others are plotting. That's why I'm here — somewhere quiet, where I can collect my thoughts.

Paimon: So whatcha thinkin' about, then?

Kaeya: The Abyss Order. A dragon wreaks havoc in Mondstadt, and the Acting Grand Master leaves the city to combat the threat. Strategically, that's the perfect moment for the Abyss Order to make their move. If you were with the Abyss Order, would you squander this golden opportunity by sending in nothing more than a few hilichurls?

Aether: There must be more to this story.

Mei: What are you getting at?

Kaeya: To get to the bottom of it, I decided to wait. So I waited for their next move. Then came the day when you made all h**** break loose in Stormterror's Lair, just as the hilichurls' cries sounded from the city gates... That same day, I saw shadowy figures in the city itself.

Paimon: Inside the city?!

Kaeya: Well, all the other knights were outside, fighting the enemy. As you can imagine, that left the inside of the city completely unguarded. Except for me, of course. And so I approached the Abyss Order infiltrators for a bit of... hmm, let's call it fraternizing. Through various means, I managed to gather some rather interesting intel. The situation is this: The Abyss Order... they are united under a single leader.

Paimon: The Abyss Order has a leader?

Kaeya: Yes. And it was this very leader who devised the plot to turn Dvalin into a weapon of war.

Paimon: What exactly did you have to do to find this out!?

Kaeya: Heh... Let's just say I'm blessed with certain linguistic powers. There's more... The Abyss Order has a name for this leader... They call her... "The Princess."

Valkyries, Paimon, Aether, and me: Princess...

Patrick: Did they say what the Princess looks like? Her real name? Facial features? Hair color? Eye color? Age? Clothing? Height? Measurements? Anything?

Kaeya: I'm afraid not. It looks like they want to keep their leader's identity a secret. Now, I'm sorry to cut this intelligence briefing short, but I do believe I spy Amber heading this way... I think she's still angry with me for my absence from the defense effort during the attack... I'd better slip away before she notices me.

And with that, Kaeya high tailed it out of here and ran away just before Amber got here.

Amber: One minute I see Kaeya, the next he's slipped away! Clear sign of guilty conscience...

Aether: He does a lot of behind the scenes...

Amber: Are you sure? Because that sounds exactly what he'd say to talk himself out of trouble...

Kiana: He told us that since the inside of Mondstadt was unguarded, the Abyss Order infiltrated but Kaeya took care of them and interrogated them for some information on their leader. That's what he told us. So you shouldn't be angry at him.

Patrick: He did fight. He was just on guard for infiltrators.

Amber: Really? He did just that? I think he's making that up. But let's just forget about him. I worked super hard today and my tummy's rumbling. Let's order! Hi Sara! One sticky Honey Roast, please...

Kiana: Make that three Sticky Honey Roasts!

We sat down with Amber.

Amber: So. Now the Stormterror threat is behind us, what are your plans for the next step?

Paimon: Paimon thinks it's time to leave Mondstadt, and keep looking through the seven nations until we find clues about his sister and the rest of their missing friends and family.

Patrick: We have two down and eight or I should say nine more to go. And we have to leave.

Amber: Huh, really? Oh... Well, I guess this is goodbye for now...

Aether: We will miss our Favonian family.

Patrick: You were really fun to hang out with.

Kiana: And fun to fight by too. You and the others were great to us.

Amber: Hey, don't feel down! You'll always be a friend of the Knights of Favonius and our Honorary Knights. Wherever you go, and wherever the wind may blow.

Valkyries, Paimon, Aether, and me: Let the Wind lead!

Amber: That's the spirit! Remember, Mondstadt will always welcome you. Alright, now lets eat before it gets cold!

We enjoyed a nice meal time.

Paimon: Hmm, that was goooood! Note to Paimon, Amber's recommendations are worth the wait!

Kiana: They sure are! I hope to have more Sticky Honey Roast with Amber!

Amber: Of course! While I don't trust myself in the kitchen, you can always trust me with the menu! Oh, I almost forgot to mention... Jean's waiting for you at the cathedral. It's something to do with the Holy Lyre Der Himmel... You'd better head there now.

Theresa: We'll do that right away.

Seele: Thanks for everything Amber! We'll come back to Mondstadt and visit you and the Knights of Favonius again!

Bronya: And we hope to run into you again in the wild.

We parted ways with Amber then headed for the Cathedral.

(Cathedral)

We arrived at the Cathedral where we met with Jean, Venti, and Barbara.

Patrick in mind: Now we finally meet Barbara.

Jean: This is Barbara, the Deaconess of the Church. She is here to retrieve the Holy Lyre der Himmel.

Barbara: May the Anemo Archon protect you. I'm not really in a position to speak compared to our Acting Grand Master... But I still want to thank you all on behalf of all of Mondstadt for your assistance! Fortunately, everything was resolved peacefully... I can't imagine how an all-out war between the military and the dragon would have ended...

Jean: Now the Fatui have no choice but to keep their mouthes shut. They must be annoyed that things didn't turn out as planned for them. This time, they lost their best excuse to pressure the Knights of Favonius. Diplomatically speaking, they gained nothing, and on the contrary simply proved just how vexatious they can be.

Barbara: Sounds like quite the story.

Kiana: Well its just too bad that we couldn't pin them down for any crimes they committed in Mondstadt. Like how they tried to steal the Holy Lyre without anyone knowing and then blame it on someone else.

Seele: They should learn to never underestimate us.

Theresa: The next time we see them, we'll scare them away.

Patrick: Better hope we can pin them down for crimes they commit and to have some evidence with us.

Himeko: They could be plotting something right now.

Kiana: We'll give them a good beating too.

Barbara: So, did you bring the Holy Lyre with you? We cannot ask you to keep defending the lyre forever. The Seneschal has been pressing me for a while now...

Paimon: We ahh... did bring it with us... Ummm... It's just... it's a little...

Barbara: Oh, don't worry! I'm not here to collect rent! The Church has always received special funding...

Patrick: While trying to save Dvalin the first time, an Abyss Mage stopped us and destroyed the Holy Lyre to prevent us from saving Dvalin.

Barbara: WHAT!?

Patrick: It's not in pieces. I meant that the Abyss Mage broke it and the lyre lost all its Anemo power. If you're gonna blame someone, blame the Abyss Order.

Aether brought out the broken lyre and just as we expected, Barbara was shocked.

Barbara: Aah...

Paimon: Ahh...

Venti: Ugh...

Kiana: Ehh...

Seele: Umm...

Theresa: Uhh...

Patrick: Aha...

Barbara: AAAAAARGH!!! THE HOLY LYRE!!! Oh, Lord Barbatos... Even if I atoned for these sins for the rest of my life... ...it would still not be enough!

Venti: *sigh*... Oh give it here...

Aether handed the lyre to Venti then he used his Anemo magic then the lyre was fixed and back to normal.

Barbara: How could this— The Holy Lyre... But how?

Barbara then took it into her position.

Kiana: I thought you said it couldn't be fixed.

Venti: I did but I'll tell you shortly.

Paimon: Huh? Let Paimon see!

Barbara: No! No!

Patrick: Don't make things worse for her. You have the Holy Lyre back but make sure to upgrade your security and have guards watch over it 24 hours a day. And lock it up in a vault so no one can teleport in to steal it again. And try not to stay angry with us very long.

Barbara: I don't know how you managed to fix it, but you'll never touch the lyre again!

Then she ran off.

Theresa: We won't! We have our own artifacts with us! So you don't have to worry about us anymore!

Patrick: She's really angry with us. I don't think she'll ever forgive us for this.

Venti: ...We ahh... really should get going... That trick I used to "repair" the Holy Lyre... Hehe, I mean the magic I used... ...It isn't going to hold forever you know.

Everyone: WHAT!?

Then Venti started to leave. But we went after him

Paimon: You— Tone Deaf Bard!!! Hey! Don't go!

When we got outside, two Fatui soldiers appeared from the ground and attempted to attack Venti. But we attacked them first and knocked them back. They began to disappear into the ground. Aether was going to go after them but I grabbed his arm and stopped him.

Patrick: Don't get too far from Venti.

Then someone snapped their fingers. Cryo magic was casted on us and Paimon was frozen solid but then I used my Pyro magic to counter with help from Venti and his Anemo magic. I created a fire wall with a fire tornado around us to protect us.

Patrick in mind: I know we shouldn't interfere but I at least want to try and defend Venti.

Then there was evil laughter coming from a woman accompanied by two Fatui mages. The girls and I knew who it was. La Signora.

Signora: At last, Mondstadt's rodent ruler in the flesh.

Valkyries and me: La Signora!

Signora: Scurring through the streets, looking for leftovers... Mondstadt calls this a god?

I pointed one of my swords at Signora.

Patrick: Stay back!

Signora: I never thought there would be interlopers defending this god. First you ruined our plan to steal the Holy Lyre then you foiled our plan to kill the dragon.

Venti: Resident rodent... beats invasive vermin—

Patrick: And a mongrel!

Signora: Don't you dare speak back to me, insolent bard.

Patrick: We're warning you Signora. Don't you dare come any closer or we'll kill you.

Signora: Look at you, absentee archon of Mondstadt... How important you have become...

Venti: That smirk you wear looks out of place. Did you steal it from your master's face?

Signora did another Cryo attack but I countered with another Pyro attack.

Patrick: You can try using Cryo again. I'll just keep melting all your attacks.

Signora: Should have held your tongues.

Signora snapped her fingers then the Fatui soldiers used Pyro magic and destroyed the fire wall.

Patrick: We won't you Ley a finger on him!

We unleashed our attacks simultaneously on Signora and the Fatui but they all teleported out of the way then Signora went at light speed and stabbed us all then ripped something out of Venti. We collapsed to the ground.

Signora: So. This is a Gnosis? Wouldn't be caught dead wearing this ugly thing in public...

As revenge, I manage to stab Signora through her chest with my sword covered in Pyro.

Patrick: I told you not to come any closer to us you wretched w****.

Venti: Beauty is a waste... when the beholder has no taste...

Patrick and Venti: And you can't defeat us or bring us down...

Signora kicked Venti away then she she stabbed me again with her bare arm.

I shot a fire blast up into the air to signal for help but then Signora kicked me and I lost consciousness and the fire blast dissipated.

Aether: Venti...

Aether tried to get up but the Fatui soldiers and mages attacked us with magic then everyone lost consciousness all except Aether.

Signora: Well, we have what we came here for. Come. Before our dear Favonian friends arrive. Leave nothinf for them to find.

One of the Fatui soldiers hit Aether making him lose consciousness.

Finally, La Signora and the Fatui got away. They wanted to make sure that the Knights of Favonius don't find them here so they can't get pinned down for any crimes and they made sure not to leave any evidence behind so they don't get labeled as criminals, fugitives, or enemies.

After much time has passed...

We regained consciousness and felt Barbara using her healing magic to heal us. We felt our stab wounds were closed.

Barbara: Ah! Honorary Knights, you're all awake!

We each got up.

Patrick: The Fatui attacked us.

Kiana: The Fatui ambushed us then ripped something out of Venti then they got away and got rid of all evidence! We better tell the Knights of Favonius!

Mei: We can't. We don't have any evidence. They won't believe a single word we tell them. Maybe Jean, Lisa, Kaeya, and Diluc will but no one else.

Kiana: I'm so angry right now! I just want to beat down Signora!

Barbara: Please calm down Kiana! I believe you! Please stop!

Kiana: SHUT UP YOU STUPID NUN!

Barbara: What did you just call me?!

Kiana: A stupid nun!...

I rushed in.

Patrick: Kiana! Shut up!

Then I raised my fist at her.

Patrick: Let's see you grit those teeth!

Then I punched her right in the face and she got knocked back then she crashed into a wall. What I did made Barbara, Aether, and Paimon shocked.

Paimon: What kind of world is punching a girl ever okey?!

Patrick: It's always unfair that boys never do payback on girls for getting hit. And words wouldn't work so I had to use force instead.

The smoke cleared as Kiana was rubbing her head.

Patrick: You snapped out of it yet?

Kiana: Sorry about that. I guess I really did overreact.

Patrick: We'll get another shot at Signora. So the next time we meet her, I'll use Shirou Emiya's Unlimited Blade Works to finish her off.

Kiana: That punch felt like the one you gave me before to calm me down after I was scared that Sirin would try to kill you and that I wanted you to stay away from me.

I helped Kiana up then we got back together with everyone.

Patrick: Where's Venti?

Aether: Venti... is he alright?

Barbara: Um... I wouldn't say he's "alright," exactly. I found you all lying down unconscious outside the Cathedral with so much blood coming out of you, and used my elemental powers to heal you... That bard awakened first, but strangely, my healing powers had almost no effect on him... This is the first time I've encountered such a patient. But he just said "it's completely normal," and then got up and left the Cathedral...

Paimon: He left? Already? Where'd he go?

Barbara: The Symbol of Mondstadt's Hero, that's what he said.

Kiana: And he didn't even bother waiting for us to wake up.

Barbara: I wanted to stop him, but Jean— I mean, Master Jean said to let him leave. How strange.

Aether in mind: I think Jean understands...

Paimon: Paimon remembers! Venti healing under that tree before...

Paimon in mind: It's probably due to the connection between Wineries and the Anemo Archon. Master Jean has figured it out as well, but we can't tell Barbara...

Kiana in mind: We can't tell Barbara. Not that she would believe us or anything but we can't tell her anyway even if she doesn't believe us.

Patrick: Well... I guess we'll be going now.

I used my ability then the construct circle appeared then I chanted my summoning spell then Toriyama appeared.

Patrick: We'll go check on Venti. Sorry for all your troubles. Especially regarding the Holy Lyre. It won't happen again.

We each got on then we flew away. We left a shocked and clueless Barbara behind.

Barbara: How does that boy even know how to use a summoning spell to summon a dragon? And how is his master a dragon that trained him?
